simplicimus: Kirk 2.0 hasn't been around long enough to piss anybody off. Nor has Spock 2.0. Unless Scotty's gremlin assumed human form, I don't see anyone seeking vengeance.

why should it be someone who hates kirk. he could easily be seeking vengance against the federation as a total, and kirk just has to deal with him because he's the captain of a ship and whatnot.

Aboleth: Movie cold open: Deep space with a tinge of nebula in the background. Something drifts unpowered in the distance. It approaches the camera slowly, like the Narcissus in the opening credits of Aliens. We eventually see that it's a DY-100 transport. It passes by the camera which tracks it, and we can clearly read "S.S. Botany Bay" on its side.

The camera finishes its 180 degrees pan and a Federation starship can be seen approaching in the distance. It's a Constitution-class ship.

Cut to close up of the starship. At first we think it's the Enterprise, but we see the U.S.S. Constellation NCC-1017. Without any warning, photon torpedos streak to the Botany Bay. Three successive hits completely obliterate the sleeper ship. There is a spectacular series of explosion.

As the blast dissipates, we cut to a woman at the weapons station on the Constellation's bridge. She turns to report, "Target destroyed, Ambassador Spock. No survivors confirmed."

Camera quick-pans to Spock Prime standing by the captain's seat. He says, "Thank you, Ensign... McGivers. Captain, you may resume your mission." He leaves the bridge.

Then, we move on to the actual movie with Kirk and company on the Enterprise.

I can FEEL the nerd rage... It's like it's spilling back from the alternate universe you created by typing that.

Assuming that my memory is correct and that the universes diverge at the point where the Romulan ship arrives at the beginning of the previous movie, I'm going to go out on a limb & posit that Khan is found by another Star Fleet vessel commanded by a milquetoast captain who he defeated and assumed the identity of before going back to Earth to enact his revenge for being exiled during the eugenics wars 20 years ago our time.

Cause Paramount doesn't give a shiat about Star Trek, and decided to give the franchise to prestige rather than passion.

I liked the Abrahms film, despite its MANY flaws. But he self admits NOT being a Dan, and he likes to do weird shiat. Works well with original material, not so much with an established franchise.

Turns out Kirk died in the Bar Fight and this is all a dream as his brain hemorrhages...

You know, something like that.

I wouldn't. Warning them about Q means he doesn't test Picard, which means we don't get advance warning of the Borg so we can prepare. Without Q, the Borg flatten us in months when they get to us.

If memory serves, the Borg only knew about humanity because of Q?

Q introduced the Borg to Starfleet earlier than they would have reached humanity in the normal course of events but it's pretty clear he did so because he believed Picard and Co were the best chance to stop them. He tampered with history to help Starfleet, arguably because of his affection for the Enterprise-D crew.

Ed Grubermann: 1: Who?

1a. Benedict Cumberbatch is a British actor most famous for playing Sherlock in the BBCs fantastic modernizing of the original Doyle classics. He's kind of becoming a big name nowadays, as he will also be voicing Smaug in The Hobbit as well as playing the Necromancer.

1a. John Harrison is... Well nobody knows. It's theorized that he is based off a reoccurring background character from the original series, or is using an alias to hide his identity as Kahn or possibly Mitchell.

2. Because he's playing/is the primary antagonist of Star Trek and its STAR TREK.

Welcome to the thread.

OH MY GOD! THEY MIGHT NOT BE REMAKING THE SAME OLD CRAP OVER AND OVER AGAIN!

If that is really the name of Cumberbatch's character, then maybe Peter Weller (who is supposedly a "mentor" character to the villain) is Khan, and Cumberbatch is his son. So don't worry, you might still get the unoriginal movie you want so badly anyway.

I can't wrap my head around why Trekkies want this to be a retelling of a story than an original one.

GAT_00: simplicimus: Lionel Mandrake: That's perfect casting!

An actor I've never heard of playing a character I've never heard of. Brilliant!

We're in alternate universe. Maybe it's a new character posing a different threat. Not everything needs to be recycled from past episodes/movies. Except Tribbles.

I'd like the new universe a lot more if they made a point to diverge completely from the original. Even Mitchell is disappointing in that respect. While Spock obviously won't diverge details of the original timeline, I would think even he would warn the Federation of the biggest threats, which would arguably include Mitchell, Khan and V'Ger. The Talosians probably too. And that someone needs to get on cloning a few whales or go steal a ratty BOP.

Violating Federation laws on timeline changes yes, but it's clear that the original timeline is not reparable.

The reason the new timeline is so similar in most ways to the old is that the timeline itself tends to go towards the way it's supposed to be. Even Old Spock said that Kirk and Spock would have met no matter what because of that. Basically, it's doing it's best to repair itself and because it can't, you end up with what we have. Which is pretty nice.

Whedon's shows that worked started with a small cast of central characters and added other characters gradually were successful . Shows that failed started with a large number of characters. Since everybody knows Star Trek's characters, he might work as a director.

Huh? I think it's pretty clear he was being an asshole. The Federation lost countless lives due to their war with the Borg. Further, it wasn't Picard and Co who were the best chance to stop them, nor Sisko and Co. It was Janeway.

I was commenting on the fact that he's had all of 4 TV shows. Two ran their course and can be considered "successful." The other two were cancelled unceremoniously.

The first was Buffy and that was great. He parlayed that into 5 seasons of Angel. That's essentially just 12 seasons of one show. So that show was successful. Firefly and Dollhouse were not.

As for Angel, he took 3 characters from Buffy to make that series work, so we can't even make that call. As you said, those were established characters already.

True, but he was mostly a bit part for the first season or so, meaning not really involved in the action.

Bullsh*t. He was there all the time. He doesn't have to be in the action scenes to be a main character. What show were you watching?

Shepard Book and River did a lot of sitting around in Firefly, but you counted the whole crew as main characters.

I like the idea of it being that character. He's canon, he's in more episodes than Janice Rand, he apparently can run the entire ship, and where's the recognition, Kirk? Huh? No, that idiot Chekov gets all the glory.
