I expect another lawsuit or three out of this one, though it'll probably end up the same way. I was a little taken aback by his vehemence, but it's pretty much justified. D-bag writer should have done an interview before posting that crap.

Amateur writer, professional moron. In the time of the FREAKING INTERNET he couldn't even get the Oats' marital status correct? Where on earth did he come up with those supposed quotes about the non-existent daughters? Oh right--his arse.

Wow, Inman went straight for the jugular. Good for him.

I love the end where he shows the guy how to actually use the internet to dig up skeletons, and proceeds to blast it everywhere with the Palin kid's B-Day card.

You clowns are being played - the Oatmeal is priming the pageviews by setting up their own straw men and effectively knocking them down with the classic underdog play.

Looks like Jack Stuef is a bit sloppy in his research and biased in his opinion. In fact if I didn't know better I'd say that Jack Stuef is a clueless dickhead wanna-be with a chip on his tiny shoulder that spurs hate-page-hits and justifies his miserable existence exposing himself to the internet.

Matthew, if you're reading this, good for you.

Ricky Jervais made a comment recently (forgive poor paraphrasing) about how nothing should be off-limits (rape, Holocaust) because whether or not something was offensive should be based on whether or not the joke was coming from a "good place." A lot of people (and an alot) agree.

The F5 thing was not an anti-woman or pro-rape gag.

The Palin baby card, on the other hand....

Fark that pudgy farkstick and BUZZFEED in the F5 key.

You'd think, given recent history, that anybody going after Matt Inman like this would be more careful playing fast and loose with the facts.

I stopped reading the Oatmeal when his comics turned into tl;dr preach-fests about how serious he takes the internet.

Putting aside the amazingly entertaining venom of this whole thing, Inman spent half his yearly income to buy his sister a house. That's pretty amazing. Good for him.

Jesus, I can't choose who I hate more The Oatmeal or BuzzFeed. Oatmeal is an unfunny prick with entitlement issues and BuzzFeed is a cancer on the internet making their idiotic "45 things" lists that are just random photos.

Also, oh look, the Oatmeal guy is in YET ANOTHER feud. I want the Oatmeal defenders come over and say it's also the other guy's fault like with Carreon (who was another asshole too).

If everybody's having a problem with you, the common denominator is you, not them which means Oatmeal IS an asshole.

Now, slobber all you want about him....

Oh and I love how Oatmeal has to mention his donations every three sentences. It's like he makes the donations so he can brag about it when people attack him.

Guess what? Donating money doesn't exempt you from being a dickhead.

And bragging about it is distasteful.

What else do you expect him to do? The buzzfeed article was attacking him and attempting to paint him in a bad light using bad, or blatantly incorrect info.

Do you have other posts besides this one where he brags about donations? I don't read the Oatmeal, but he mentions on this particular thing that he doesn't mention it, and so it seems like now he's raging a little about it because he's defensive and trying to make a point. Which would make what you're saying more of the "somebody already decided they don't like the Oatmeal so anything you can find that support that are valid while anything that doesn't is irrelevant" camp, which was sort of the point of his entire rant.

The guy writing the red in the Oatmeal thing is a little aggro, sure, but he's an internet personality, not a saint or a politician. Judging solely by this thing (and the little exposure I've occasionally had to the Oatmeal) I'd be inclined to say the original "journalist" is a giant bag of shiat who typifies everything I hate in would-be writers, giving the rest of us a bad name.

/Also, Buzzfeed is the worst thing on the internet, really

He did the same in the Carreon case. Appealing to his donations.

And hey, in case you didn't read my previous post, I already said BuzzFeed is the scum of the Internet and the writer is an asshole too, so no need to tell me what I've already said :P

In both cases this guy seems to be 100% in the right, though. In the first case he was sued for complaining that someone was plagiarizing his work, in the second it looks like some random asshole journalist made up a bunch of lies about him to get more hits for an article.

rocky_howard: If everybody's having a problem with you, the common denominator is you, not them which means Oatmeal IS an asshole.

What the hell kind of retarded ass logic is this? it is entirely possible for one person to be attacked twice in their life by separate assholes without also being an asshole. Hell, if that's your cutoff for asshole-dom, pretty much every famous person throughout history is an asshole.

Now, I haven't really been following any of this, so perhaps I'm missing something. What's this guy done to make you hate him so much?

rocky_howard: He did the same in the Carreon case. Appealing to his donations.

Okay, that's why I was asking. Didn't know if you had a legit point or were Fark-reacting, if you know what I mean. If he brings it up a lot, yeah, that's kinda douchey.

Even with that, I think it's more coming from a place of sincerity than anything else. Like I said he does come off as a little aggro, but I dunno, saying you spent half of your big pile of money on your sister when you're being accused of being a money grubber is kinda legit.

Kinda. I'm also with you, in spirit at least.

rocky_howard: no need to tell me what I've already said :P

That part was just reaffirming my position, not really saying it to you directly, hence the slashies. I just really farking hate Buzzfeed. :p

Yeah, Gunther makes a pretty good point. Getting into feuds sucks, but he didn't really start either one.

Gunther: rocky_howard: If everybody's having a problem with you, the common denominator is you, not them which means Oatmeal IS an asshole.

What the hell kind of retarded ass logic is this?

It's not retarded logic actually, it's that the initial premise is faulty. If everyone thought the Oatmeal is an asshole, it would likely be true. It's the old axiom: "If a teacher conducts a test and the entire class fails, the teacher is to blame."

The problem here is that the only two people I've seen so far that really dislike the Oatmeal is the clownshoe blogger that started this, and Rocky_howard himself. I didn't come away thinking he was that big an asshole (just somebody that could construct these kinds of posts without so much ... font-based emotion?), so you know ...

It's not everybody.

2012-12-10 11:36:03 PM
1) Anyone who takes anything written on Buzzfeed seriously needs to be banned from procreating at this point. That site is a waste of webspace.

2) I like The Oatmeal's comics (Inman's comic about developing content for his site is a good read), but he's developing an "holier-than-thou" shtick that's become annoying with these blog posts.

3) That said, he's right to call the douchebag Buzzfeed writer out for shoddy yellow "journalism", especially since the douchebag writer did something that was worse (insulting a kid with a serious illness and in the process, commit the cardinal sin of writing: plagiarism).

4) The rape joke wasn't offensive as much as it wasn't really that funny, to me at least.

2012-12-10 11:38:09 PM

rocky_howard: He did the same in the Carreon case. Appealing to his donations.

Wasn't that the time he actually made the donation, and now he's referencing it? That's hardly a long term pattern. I don't know what The Oatmeal did to you, but it must have been humiliatingly awful.

2012-12-10 11:38:52 PM
I'm sure Fark will keep giving links to Buzzfeed anyway.

Ditto. There's something about furious attempts to protect one's reputation that makes me contemptuous of a person. The Oatmeal also brings back bad memories of Digg.

2012-12-10 11:48:17 PM
I'm amazed at the people that are mad at Inman for his response to a blatantly false hit piece. Is he supposed to just sit and accept it cause you don't like the comics?

Also, people seem to be giving him a hard time for constantly being in a fued after two events. Yet, looking at it, I'm not exactly sure how he is to blame at all.

I like how the Buzzfeed writer acts like it is some awful sin to write things that you think people will like, and then want payment for creating them. I like how Matthew Inman buys into it. "I bought a house for my sister and donated to charity, so it's all right"!

No, Matthew, it's not all right because you bought a house for your sister and donated to charity. It's all right because THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH MAKING MONEY SELLING ART!

His answer to that part should have been "Damn right I'm a millionaire. I'm rich, and you're not, because you suck and I don't".

For being a comedian, Inman's got a hell of a thin skin. He could have ripped Buzz Killington a new asshole without accepting his premise.

Unless Buzzfeed posts an apology I will no longer be clicking their links.

I don't think think Inman is any kind of saint, but that "amorphous blob threatening an anthropomorphized F5 key with rape" was worth any of the almost outrage it supposedly caused. Doubly so since he pulled it immediately when people took offense.

Meh, Inman gets overly worked up about stuff and makes it public, and that seems to work well for him. Or, it did at least once.

I think he just needs to ignore crappy buzzfeed articles, but whatever. I find about 60% of his cartoons funny, which is enough to make me check his site once a week. Can't bother to read another rant about how he was misrepresented by some blogger though, he'll get over it.

Most trolls aren't capable of this. Hence the Oatmeal hate. Not only can he see through bullshiat, he can call people out on it. This terrifies trolls who exist solely to pretend to be more retarded then they are.

The thing to remember is there exists a thing called a Social Justice Warrior(SJW). SJW are concern trolls. Nothing truly offends them because they dont have an honest response to anything. They are essentially borderline sociopaths who feign offense because they know that it will give them a response. Their primary goal is getting you to do what they want you to do. Their biggest method of trolling is rape. After that it's race. Thats followed closely by sex/gender issues. Any reference to such will bring their ire upon you... if you're their target. If you're cool with them you can say whatever you want.

People are learning though and now others employ the tactic of concern trolling because it's so effective.

I got a kick out of how him being a Republican(even though he's not) would make him an asshole who is exploiting tragedy for humor. I dont think anti-Republicans realize they make such a fallacy. As if being a Democrat makes all humor okay but being a Republican sequesters you to jokes that have to be cleared first.

So yea, in short the prevailing form of sophistry on the net is trolling. And what is Steuf's Fark I anyways?

2) I like The Oatmeal's comics (Inman's comic about developing content for his site is a good read), but he's developing an "holier-than-thou" shtick that's become annoying with these blog posts.

True

3) That said, he's right to call the douchebag Buzzfeed writer out for shoddy yellow "journalism", especially since the douchebag writer did something that was worse (insulting a kid with a serious illness and in the process, commit the cardinal sin of writing: plagiarism).

True

4) The rape joke wasn't offensive as much as it wasn't really that funny, to me at least.

I think perhaps that Inman's characterization of Stuef as a bitter, failed humorist is probably dead on. The downs-syndrone baby joke wasn't the first time Stuef has faced fire for tasteless jokes. Google reveals he was apparently involved with a racist brouhaha over a sardonic article about a campus "cross lighting" published in the Georgetown heckler.

So it seems Stuef has a track record of making extremely tasteless jokes and facing enormous public and professional backlash. I personally could care less - my own sense of humor is as black, vile, and tasteless as they come - but I found this additional piece of info pretty interesting.

Like I said, it supports Inman's characterization of Stuef as a bitter, failed humorist.

Well now you're just nitpicking about wording. I think it was assumed that your comment "he would not have $200,000 in a chequing account" basically meant he would not have that cash available to buy a house with, not specifically what type of check/savings/investment account it would reside in.
So why exactly couldn't he use part of the money he made to buy a house?
I guess some people with that sort of income would tie it up in long term investments that they shouldn't/couldn't touch, but maybe helping his sister was a dream of his, and once big paychecks started showing up, he was setting aside enough money to outright buy a house for her, rather than buying 5 or 10 year bonds?

Ah, I think I follow you now, if he already paid $250,000 for a house, he wouldn't have an extra $200,000 in cash sitting around in addition to that, cause if I follow the story, the 200k in donations he raised, was not the 200k in the photo, but actually his money.
But I'm pretty sure this all didn't happen in the same week, maybe not even the same year, $500,000 income was for 2012 alone, likely made above $0 in the years leading up to it

Oh my god you really are that dumb.

A) The year he bought the house for his sister (2010, going by the "Year after starting The Oatmeal" line) is NOT the same year he withdrew the $200,000 for the photo op (2012).

B) Even if it did occur in the same year, he would have $250,000 remaining after purchasing the house, meaning he could withdraw $200,000, and still have $50,000 left in the bank.

C) Stop switching between 'chequing' and 'checking'. I understand you're Canadian, but pick a side.

So all the money in one's bank account has to come from that year's income? This is news to me. Need to get a bank draft for $X for the down payment, then $X has to be in one place.

I guess that's a little over the top. The picture without the words "rape victim" probably would have been fine.

But I don't get anything about the other "criticisms". The buzzfeed article is written like a hit piece, except nothing they talk about is actually bad.
Why should I care that he's a republican (which he's not)?
Why should I care that the guy is married and has children (even though he isn't and doesn't)?
Why do I care that he's used naughty words on twitter?
Who cares if he has an editor?
Why should I care that he tries to reach a wide audience (which may or may not be true)?
Why is it bad that he makes a lot of money off of his website?
What sorts of evil SEO is he alleged to have done, besides making things that people like?
Since the oatmeal makes all its money from physical merchandise, what does SEO have to do with anything?
Who cares what his process for making popular comics is?

scottydoesntknow: Wow, Inman went straight for the jugular. Good for him.

I love the end where he shows the guy how to actually use the internet to dig up skeletons, and proceeds to blast it everywhere with the Palin kid's B-Day card.

That response warmed my dark little heart. Calling morons out should be one of the requirements for canonization.

piercedgeek: Well now you're just nitpicking about wording.

Also, I'm sort of betting he's not counting the money he raised from and for the Carreon incident as income.

Re: bragging about donations
Um, when the attacking article is going to great lengths to paint the guy as someone that is just milking everything he can for every last dime he can get, calling him a sprawling enterprise, and playing up how much money the guy is making while insinuating that he's doing it through underhanded means, then it is not uncalled for to repeatedly point out that he gives most of the money he makes away.

It rather invalidates the whole "just in it for the money" when he doesn't actually, you know, KEEP THE MONEY.

I especially liked where the guy brought up the picture of him rolling around in the $200k he raised. I remember watching that case, he was getting sued for that amount by a troll. He raised the money and took the picture of him rolling around in it just to piss the guy off with a "You wanted this? This money that I'm just rolling around in? Well tough luck. I raised and now its going to help needy people instead of lining your filthy pockets. fark YOU!"

Mrbogey: czetie: What I learned from all this: acting offended over any non-literal use of the word "rape" is the latest way that the dull, witless clods who comprise most of the users of social media demonstrate how sensitive and thoughtful they really are.

In other words, it's this generation's Godwin.

You just explained someone who's been in my WoW guild for years and bothered the hell out of most of us during that time. He finally crossed the line recently and was influenced to 'part ways' with us, but I'm sure he'll be back. I'm going to keep your explanation for that time.
