Why would someone who works on the internet, who presumably knows how things work, write a poorly (un?) researched hatchet job of someone with an audience of millions?

BuzzFeed contributors are often paid on a per-page view basis, meaning the more traffic that's delivered to the post the more money

Oh....

Stay tuned next week for my exhaustively researched expose about how Cory Doctorow, moot, Wil Wheaton and Drew Curtis get together every other weekend and kick puppies!

Unless Buzzfeed posts an apology I will no longer be clicking their links.

I don't think think Inman is any kind of saint, but that "amorphous blob threatening an anthropomorphized F5 key with rape" was worth any of the almost outrage it supposedly caused. Doubly so since he pulled it immediately when people took offense.

The notion that it's somehow bad to create material and choose subjects specifically to entertain and grow your audience does kind of explain Buzzfeed.

rocky_howard: Jesus, I can't choose who I hate more The Oatmeal or BuzzFeed. Oatmeal is an unfunny prick with entitlement issues and BuzzFeed is a cancer on the internet making their idiotic "45 things" lists that are just random photos.

Also, oh look, the Oatmeal guy is in YET ANOTHER feud. I want the Oatmeal defenders come over and say it's also the other guy's fault like with Carreon (who was another asshole too).

If everybody's having a problem with you, the common denominator is you, not them which means Oatmeal IS an asshole.

Now, slobber all you want about him....

Naw, there are just too many idiots on the internet like yourself who enjoy being annonymous and would never say or do the things they claim if it was linked to their drivers license.

Maybe that...journalist?... forgot he wasn't writing for the Onion and that non-Onion articles require that you not just randomly type whatever pops into your brain.

Too bad the Weekly World News wasn't still around, he could go work for them.

The Jami Turman Fan Club: very insightful.

Inman can occasionally be a bit of a jerk, but he's done a lot of good in the world. Plus he makes me laugh.

Guess what? Donating money doesn't exempt you from being a dickhead.

And bragging about it is distasteful.

What I love is how emotional you are getting about this Oat person.

So basically the Oatmeal is did some shiat wrong (as he was with Tesla/Edison debate) and instead of owning up to it gets all whiney and retorts to moral equivalence arguments. Mission accomplished Jack Stuef.

I have it on good authority that John Scalzi does Drew's laundry. And by "does Drew's laundry," I mean he rubs poop in it.

rocky_howard: TheHumanCannonball: What else do you expect him to do? The buzzfeed article was attacking him and attempting to paint him in a bad light using bad, or blatantly incorrect info.

The Oatmeal guy might be a dickhead, but in this case he's a more likeable dickhead than the original article's author.

He can defend himself without having to mention his donations, that's just bush league.

Again, donating money is not a shield you can use for your dickishness.

Also, I would like to say that there's a difference between being an asshole (who doesn't care who he offends) and a dick (who cares way too much about who he offends).

Oatmeal is an asshole. Jack Steuf is a dick.

Did he make a bad joke? Yes. Did he eventually apologize? Yes. Does he deserve a fabricated bulllshiat hit piece? No.

He may come off as a bit angry over a stupid BuzzFeed article, but if some jackass made shiat up about me that got tens of thousands of hits, you'd be damn sure I'd be pissed off and fight back.

Meh, Inman gets overly worked up about stuff and makes it public, and that seems to work well for him. Or, it did at least once.

I think he just needs to ignore crappy buzzfeed articles, but whatever. I find about 60% of his cartoons funny, which is enough to make me check his site once a week. Can't bother to read another rant about how he was misrepresented by some blogger though, he'll get over it.

Uh.

I'm 100% on the Oatmeal guy here.

And I'm not really seeing anything that bad from his behavior, as internet people go.

2012-12-11 05:56:13 AM
People are terrified that TheOatmeal has the mental capacity to deconstruct someones argument and put forth a point for point rebuttal.

Most trolls aren't capable of this. Hence the Oatmeal hate. Not only can he see through bullshiat, he can call people out on it. This terrifies trolls who exist solely to pretend to be more retarded then they are.

Sure it's bland and offensive for the sake of being offensive, but so is most humor on the internet targeted at white males.

What I learned from all this: acting offended over any non-literal use of the word "rape" is the latest way that the dull, witless clods who comprise most of the users of social media demonstrate how sensitive and thoughtful they really are.

In other words, it's this generation's Godwin.

The thing to remember is there exists a thing called a Social Justice Warrior(SJW). SJW are concern trolls. Nothing truly offends them because they dont have an honest response to anything. They are essentially borderline sociopaths who feign offense because they know that it will give them a response. Their primary goal is getting you to do what they want you to do. Their biggest method of trolling is rape. After that it's race. Thats followed closely by sex/gender issues. Any reference to such will bring their ire upon you... if you're their target. If you're cool with them you can say whatever you want.

People are learning though and now others employ the tactic of concern trolling because it's so effective.

I got a kick out of how him being a Republican(even though he's not) would make him an asshole who is exploiting tragedy for humor. I dont think anti-Republicans realize they make such a fallacy. As if being a Democrat makes all humor okay but being a Republican sequesters you to jokes that have to be cleared first.

So yea, in short the prevailing form of sophistry on the net is trolling. And what is Steuf's Fark I anyways?
