Is there a web site that lists the bands I should be listening to currently in order to be hip?

2012-12-10 02:02:34 PM
I write my own music so that I'm the only one who ever listens to it and thus you'll never be as hip as me when it comes to musical taste.

People don't realize just how much time their music listening habit-or, shall I say, addiction-eats up. Four hours of music a day, over the course of a month, adds up to 120 hours. That's five entire days! Why not spend that time making your own music, instead of listening to other people play theirs? I can't begin to tell you how happy I am not to own an iPod.

NERDS!

Nikki Sixx. Lemmy. Slash. Jimmy Page. Those guys are cool enough to be on stage. These NPR guys should be running the A/V and friend-zoning the girls that the real rock stars don't want.

Was hoping they'd mention someone like Pallbearer or Occultation or Leprous or Wodenthrone or drainbow or Moon Duo or ...........

At least 25 people have heard of those bands. Not the 16 family members for the bands they listed.

Are we sure that NPR didn't just make these artists up as a practical joke?

The bands they listed actually do have a following and have received critical acclaim, but NPR's presentation on new artists tends to leave a bad taste in people's mouths (judging by the responses in this thread.) Of course, sites like Pitchfork seem to raise people's hackles even more (including mine.)

I think the average Farker would rather whine about how terrible music is today than actually discover new music (not directed at you.)

Out of curiousity, I looked up all the artists on What.cd to see what people said about them. They all seem to be quite popular and I read lots of posts about how good the music was. Just sayin'.

....Just like some stoooooopid movies have 10 ratings on imdb because a family member or production crew voted and wrote a review. Being a cynical snit, I know.

I'm quite sure those bands listed have followings, may even be darn good, may even be something I'd like. I called two vinyl hipster phonophiles, who talk endlessly about obscure acts and releases, and they knew of 3 on the NPR list. Then they hung up on me to chase down recordings and unreleased material and bootleg bar cell-phone audio of the other 7.......

I think the average Farker would rather whine about the terrible popular music, the crud you can't avoid. I know I do: the nose-bleed crap that plays on "Today'shiats" on SongPop........

Then, go to a metal site and find bands they recommend.

And if they picked a metal band you know you would (most likely) hate the band they picked anyway so it's a wash. Decline of the I sucks, man.

I have no idea if they suck...actually listening to them as I type...

Thanks, but then I'd be listening to them just out of curiosity b/c they are considered hip. I may even like some of them, but it is so much better to stumble upon a great band in some indirect way not knowing if they're hip or not, and not caring.

I do on the first, and you're probably right on the second (love metal, but can't stand harsh/grunting/growling vocals), but claiming to be a top 10 list for all music but rarely straying from what the hipsters like is a bit disingenuous.

I didn't really see it as a top ten list for all music, just 10 artists they wanted to recommend.

I'm not personally interested in the list either, as there was absolutely nothing electronic on it, I just think people are taking the intent of the article a bit out of context.

I love metal metal. Yes, I said "metal" twice. I can handle the snarling/growling vocals (as in black metal) but can no longer deal with barking/yelling vocals (as in bands like Lamb of God or Suffocation). I'm rather bored by power metal, too. But I'm willing to listen and give any metal a chance. ....man, that sounds like a personals bio....

Move to the Midwest. Our hipsters are two years behind the coastal hipsters, so you'll be futuristic if you listen to stuff that's so five minutes ago.

I'm not a hipster but I'm always on the lookout for new music and I check stereogum, pitchfork, indie rock cafe, etc. regularly and I've never heard of any of these bands.

For what its worth I've found so many good bands on those sites.

QUICK! Which band has been around for 12 years and just got a (VERY well-deserved) major label contract?

The Motherfarking Minibosses

/SiriusXM's Liquid Metal wound up "retiring" their Only-For-Listen (copyright reasons) 15-minute magnum opus "The Suicide Run (Renraku Arcology)" track from the Genesis version of Shadowrun. It sat at #1 for SIXTEEN WEEKS.
//Can't find it on the Internet right now, will try to put up a link later. FARKING. AMAZING. Sounds like Boris and Gravity Kills had a lovechild.
///Download Brass 2 now. RIGHT. NOW. If you have even a slight liking for instrumental rock.

Okay, so that no one accuses me of being a metalhead or stuck in the 80s, I paused the currently running Hall & Oates song and gave them a listen:

1 - Lord Huron, bastard son of House Elliott - That's a pretty long Fleetwood Mac intro.
2 - THEESatisfaction, vat iz it? - Help, my media player is stuck. Or is it "refracting black light"? I'm soo confused.
3 - Eins, Zwei, Polica - Pretty okay background music. I could imagine a crime show montage scene to this.
4 - John Fullbright doesn't approve - Not bad. What, wait, is that a small solo at 3/4 into the song?
5 - Savage Oppress Je t'adore - Sounds like the Cardigans got a new Yamaha keyboard
6 - Aaron & The Spell - good voice, nice structure & support
7 - Graham Dechter - Oh, smooth guitar jazz. I'll give this another listen when I get a martini
8 - Radiation City, next to Vault 101 - Is my mp3 64 khz? Sounds like the twee mamas & the hip papas. Which strangely enough isn't entirely bad.
9 - Pedro Moraes - see no. 7, replace martini with something that has a pineapple slice.
10 - Shakey Grakey, Eggs and Baky - Nothing offensive, just doesn't go anywhere. Is that supposed to go on a soundtrack?

Quite a few songs where I would've wanted more variety and structure. Could easily be the missing context, but on the other hand that seems to be pretty common in the indie music scene - more soundscapes, less virtuosity.

Nothing that struck me as too pretentious, although I didn't care too much for some styles. I'll get more stuff from 4, 6, 8 and 9...
