The scary thing is most cattle aren't given antibiotics at all in their life which means some are getting huge doses. I've heard that chickens get the most, then beef and pork gets the least.

Ummm, you are aware that they give the antibiotics prophylactically, yes? So you're just trolling, right?

Right?

Stop feeding livestock corn instead of grass so that acidosis doesn't occur which needs antibiotics to treat.

Stop farking. Oh what a wonderful world it will be when the earth is so completely overrun with people that they cannot possibly be sustained and start eating each other.

The only technology that can save mankind would be a way to sterilize large areas from the air. Unless you like killing and war, which is where it will go if we cannot arrest population growth.

Both my fiance and I have had food-borne illnesses within one week of each other (I got dysentery--yes, I thought of Oregon Trail too--and he got generic food poisoning, the day before Thanksgiving). We're both doing our best to avoid eating out altogether, but I have a monster-in-law who is extremely territorial about her kitchen (she's a hard-left conspiracy theorist who has separate sponges for the sink versus dishes) and thinks I'm a horrible meat-eater who can't possibly know how to use a pot to boil water. In spite of the fact that it's my pot.

Why we think it's a good idea to pay the least to those who handle our food is beyond me. Now, whenever people around me say "I don't understand why these knuckleheads can't do their jobs," my Weeners is, "Are you paying them enough to care?"

/we aren't, and we're gonna pay for it real quick

We're not talking about giving antibiotics to sick animals to make them better.

We're talking about adding antibiotics as an ingredient in the food we feed the animals every single day, because it makes them gain weight faster.

It also serves as a huge breeding ground for antibiotic resistant bacteria. The big problem with this is that the gene for antibiotic resistance can be transferred from one species of bacteria to another.

Have you heard about the strains of Gonorrhea, Tuberculous, Staph, and other bacteria that are very nearly immune to antibiotics becoming quite common? This is why we have them.

This is OLD news. I first heard this in a book called Eating Animals by Foer. You people should really learn more about where your food comes from. You are what you eat and what we do to factory animals is not something that you should be eating, IMHO.

2012-12-10 12:59:24 PM
since they stand outside all day..
doesn't it keep them from getting sick??

you have to give them that question so they think you are really too stupid to talk to and they walk away

the people have given up control of their foods to big business. people are failing to realize that the goal is to make a profit not to feed them healthy food. antibiotics are being used because conditions at the holding pens are so deplorable that the herds would be infected or die.

2012-12-10 01:11:21 PM
Mmmm. This is where most of the meat I eat comes from. Joining a CSA has a lot of benefits. It's convenient (we always have something to make in our freezer), and the price is pretty much the same that I'd pay at the local grocery store but it's better quality (around $50 a month, which feeds 2 of us). I meet the farmers every week at pick up time and they really care about what they do. If you have a CSA near you, I recommend checking it out. Don't get me wrong, I love all kinds of food - organic, healthy, or not - but we wanted to try this and ended up loving it.

/ now I want a hamburger

Raharu: Would you rather have diseased meat on your table?

Really, at that rate of consumption, it's not meat anymore, not meat ever again. I wonder if it decomposes?

Oh and it's not diseased until the cattle hit the feed lot and start eating corn. Cattle are meant to eat grasses not corn. When they're fed corn for 120 days they'll die if they aren't fed antibiotics. Can't say much about chicken - just don't know. Well other than it's "hurry up and die" from a producers stand point

Some of you fine folks have to watch some muck raker documentaries to really understand it. I say this because I can't be sure if there's a lot of innocents and republicans or just folks lacking a bit of insight.

As much as I rail about Netflix, they have a great library of titles on the crap in the grocery store that passes for food.

What MAY happen eventually is as the rest of the world bans the use of ALL OF THIS STUFF they might decide that their borders are closed to US citizens because we're dangerous, disease carrying, ignocrats.

The possibilities are endless!

The funny thing is that, every time the rest of the world has tried to do that in the past, they've always turned their own countries into dangerous diseased idiocracies, while America has simply kept on being an awesome shining beacon of liberty, health, and reason amid the gathering darkness.

Everyone should be okay with antibiotic resistant gonorrhea ?

The reasons are likely totally unrelated to this, but Americans have some of the worst health stats in the civilized world.

Um, you do realize that we're below the population replacement rate in this country (and throughout the developed world). If it weren't for immigration, we'd be losing people.

And that trend is spreading. Latin America and Asia are starting to see the same trends. Pretty much the only place where population is growing at a fair clip is Sub-Saharan Africa.
