"I'm not sure why people would do that when she could just take it in to the hospital instead of just dropping it off at the front door and expecting somebody else to take it in," Goldfarb said.

Really? Can't think of a single reason?

I can think of more than one pretty easily.

Bet it was some 16 year old's baby whose parents are ultra-conservative

At least she brought the baby to the hospital and had someone take it inside. I mean, she could've wrapped it up in a blanket or towel, but at least she got it to a place where it could get medical attention.

Slartibeerfest: Nobody puts bleeding baby in a bag...

Thanks Slartibeerfest for making my chuckle at an otherwise extremely depressing story.
I'm glad it had a happy ending for the baby.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth! Ungrateful little twit. A nice lady gives him a brand new baby and what does he do? Whine. The nerve of some people.

For those lucky among us that have little-to-no exposure to or time spent thinking about the desperate ends of our society, it can be difficult to wrap your head around such inhumanity. I'll tell you: before I traveled the world in the Navy and then married a psychologist that has worked with all sorts of victimized people, I had no idea what "desperation" meant. At least the baby is out of that situation now.

Still, though, a trash bag? Jesus H Christ, use a beach or bath towel or something, child!

Think of it this way - that baby is better off without its mother. By passing it off to a total stranger, she did a better thing for it than attempting to care for it herself, because it's clear that she would be completely incapable of caring for it.

We need to take away the stigma of adoption in this country. In these case, you know your parents cared about you because they DIDN'T subject you to their f*ckuppery.

PressPlayOnTape: You can't promise me that, Subby. It may contain candy. Just not in this case.

I was expecting a bag of poop, not a bag of baby.

Not so cool story. Had a neighbor who ended up in a hospital after she went nuts. It started in the early 90's when news stories about babies abandoned in trash bags was kind of a fad. She really latched onto that idea. When she drove she would avoid hitting bags in the road out of the fear it contained a baby. This mental breakdown soon began to expand to all bags and trashcans. That woman actually though there were dead babies in bags everywhere she went. It went from an amusing WTF to "holy shiat!" real quick. I am still friends with her daughter and this still comes up when we talk. Her mother was always a bit off, but that was by far her worst streak of it. I have no idea what mental illness she has. It was the first time I ever met somebody who was actually mentally ill. To this day when I see a bag drifting on the road I can't help but think of that woman. I can only imagine living in that kind of mental horror show.

Another woman had a similar issue with stuffed animals. They reminded her too much of a dead puppy she once saw on the road. She couldn't stand to see a stuff animal on the floor. especially if it were a dog or cat stuff animal. farking crazy.

Sara Goldfarb: I'm somebody now, Harry. Everybody likes me. Soon, millions of people will see me and they'll all like me. I'll tell them about you, and your father, how good he was to us. Remember? It's a reason to get up in the morning. It's a reason to lose weight, to fit in the red dress. It's a reason to smile. It makes tomorrow all right. What have I got Harry, hm? Why should I even make the bed, or wash the dishes? I do them, but why should I? I'm alone. Your father's gone, you're gone. I got no one to care for. What have I got, Harry? I'm lonely. I'm old.

Harry Goldfarb: You got friends, Ma.

Sara Goldfarb: Ah, it's not the same. They don't need me. I like the way I feel. I like thinking about the red dress and the television and you and your father. Now when I get the sun, I smile.

Might as well take it and carry it inside. This isn't a game of hot potato, the baby doesn't become your responsibility because you touched it last.

So the baby was bloody due to afterbirth and what not right? Not because it had been abused? I think that's important for me at least.

If the baby was bloodied and beaten it would affect me more emotionally than just a baby with afterbirth and fluids all over it.

No Time To Explain: Annnnd there's another reason not to go to the hospital

LOLWUT?

Going to the hospital is never optional. The only time you should be going to the hospital in the first place is if you are seriously ill or injured and you have no other realistic choice in the matter.

Unless you are one of those people who goes to the ER with your child has a cold, in which case you should DIAF.

My understanding is that the bag contains both a goo-covered newborn AND candy until it's actually opened...

When I was born, the nurses took me to my biological mother so she could hold me, nurse me, etc. She held me for about 5 minutes, then once the doctoral staff had left her alone, she removed all her IV's and monitors and left me wrapped in a blanket in the little crib in the room. She took off, they attempted to check her records and she had used a fake name and social. I was born addicted to amphetamines, so once I was weened, I got moved to a Masonic Home, then adopted after about 3 months there. I do feel for this child, but it was probably the best thing that could have happened in that situation. If the mother was scratching her arms, she is most likely strung out on something. Hopefully the kid will get placed before it's older, it tends to make the adoption process easier for the child if they're too young to remember.

I used to hate my birth mother for abandoning me, I thought she was heartless. Now that I'm older, I understand it was probably the hardest decision she ever had to make, and I'm grateful she had the smarts to do that instead of tossing me in a toilet or dumpster.

An unsurprising omission by the reporter; newborn babies do often look pretty rough regardless of situation. Even in uncomplicated births in delivery wards there is blood and goop and vernix and strange colorations to baby skin. This poor child was obviously delivered in sub-optimal surroundings without any professionals. I hope the mother's behavior wasn't due to massive blood loss in addition to her drug or whatever other problems.

However, babies born in taxi cabs, elevators, and other "holy crap it's coming NOW" situations have really good outcomes, mostly because there's no time for complications or nasty hospital germs.
