There's also a huge crowd outside City Hall, cheering each newly wedded couple, handing them flowers and throwing rice as they walk down the steps. It's so beautiful to watch. I love my blue state.

Hahaha one of the new couples with three kids, the older sister pointed at the younger brother and said he likes Twilight. Way to sell out your brother!

I ought to be down there cheering them on, but instead I'm in my warm robe, drinking coffee, with a pug asleep on my lap. But I'm there with them in spirit.

WooT! ^__^

Good times are good!

This is what moral evolution looks like, kids. Glad someone brought a camera.

That all cheerfully noted, I still really don't get the rice thing.

Why rice, why throw? What this is, I don't even...

This has always confused me but somehow never enough to ever bother googling for an answer.

Anyone? Some animistic thing? Paganistic throwback perhaps?

Totes. Thanks for sharing that. Dan's 'Savage Love' column is still the first thing I hit up when I pick up a Georgia Straight newspaper and I'm very happy for him, his family and all the other families like him on this most auspicious and long sought day.

Not sure which is making me happier at this moment the thought of all these newly married couples plighting their troths en masse with such obvious love or the thought of Frothy Santorum somewhere in his basement curled up into a fetal ball sobbing uncontrollably.

Their both so good it's hard to choose.

This should be the pitch for future gay marriage initiatives. "Let the gays marry and your team gets to put an utter beatdown on their opponents the Sunday it's legal"

I'm just glad the Supreme Court is finally going to hear these cases so we can toss this government-sponsored homophobia bullsh*t into the can for good. The rationale for forbidding same-sex marriage is entirely religious, and according to the 1st Amendment we have no business codifying religious rules into federal or state law. There is no other reason to prevent same-sex marriage. The back-asswards churches don't have to marry The Gays if they don't want, but they have absolutely no right to force other people who have no association with them to adhere to their principles. Once again the Supreme Court has to drag conservatives, kicking and screaming, into the future by making them adhere to the Constitution they claim to venerate.

Nobody is forcing you to watch, so if you don't want to watch you don't have to.

The reason for the celebration is that they are no longer prohibited from marrying the people they love.

Suppose bacon was outlawed because some religious nutjobs don't like the way it tastes and found some passage in a 3000-year-old collection of fairy tales which had already been around for thousands of years at that point before someone decided to write them down that supported their opinion that bacon is evil. Then, eventually, enough people got together to pass a resolution that declared bacon to be delicious, non-evil, and LEGAL. Wouldn't you celebrate with a baconburger, some bacon-fried bacon on the side and a glass of bacon vodak?

It could be argued that the 1st just applies to preventing an official "Church of the USA" deal like the church of england was.

The real question is: why do we allow the government (at the state or federal level) to regulate marriage at all? All it is is a ceremony where two people say "I really like this other person!" WTF does the .gov have to do with that at all?

To ward off evil spirits. Weddings have quite a storied history.

Random wedding facts off the top of my head:

1. People dress like the bride and groom to confuse evil or mischievous spirits
2. The flower girl "blesses" the area to, you guessed it, ward off evil or trickster spirits

-Because weddings weren't often romantic or by choice:
3. The groom is on the right so that his sword hand is free
4. The "best man" is the best warrior, he's there to put down resistance
5. The father escorting the woman? Again, it's related to combat.
6. The woman is veiled to hide possible ugliness (until transaction is complete) if it happened to be a business type of marriage

Well, there ARE things you cannot do in this country if you are gay. Specifically, marriage, and all associated benefits such as joint ownership of property and hospital visitation (hence today's celebration in Seattle, as that restriction is no longer in effect in Washington).

There are also other things not open to homosexuals, such as being allowed in the Boy Scouts -- and until recently, being allowed in the military. Not to mention that in Virginia, public colleges are REQUIRED to discriminate against homosexuals.

Oh, and the lynch mobs. Can't forget about the rednecks who beat and kill gays because they are gay -- which is not something straight people generally need to worry about.

In short, some people think more kids will choose to be gay. Because these people still think that being gay is a choice, and more than that - one that people would actually pick. Because a harder life with fewer romantic options is such an appealing option.

And if the kids are choosing to be gay then they're going to Hell in the long run. And in the meantime, they're not having more Christian American children to continue our society.

And fear, fear, fear, omg fear.

If you're looking for a rational reason - there isn't one.

An examination of the disastrous consequences that have resulted from legal same-sex "marriage" in Canada and in Massachusetts is sufficient to understand the rationale behind supporting retaining the traditional definition of "one man and one woman" as marriage.

Want to make sure you understand I'm not trolling.

I knew about the Boy Scouts (who cares, I'm sure there are pedophiles amongst them). As well as the military and typical marriage benefits that they can't get.

But I don't feel like it's those discriminatory reasons that they want equal rights. I feel like the way its being presented is that they want to have ceremony, like everybody else. And that screams of "hey! look at me!!!" And I think that is complete opposite of what civil rights are all about.

Women were second rate citizens for a hundred years. Blacks had slavery and then another hundred years of lynchings, drinking from toilets, riding on the back of the bus and unemployment after that. Neither women nor blacks could vote. And all simply because of how they looked. What they were physically.

Gays just can't get married or learn to tie knots at camp. That's it, they can do everything else. They are discriminated against only because of their behavior. But it's something they are capable of keeping private, so its not a glaring scarlet letter like race.

Any of that make sense? I mean, there's no logical reason why the state would ban any marriage between two willing parties. But I don't see why any church would have to acknowledge it either.

I just feel like all of this could've been worked out behind the scenes, passed, and then celebrated with one big gay ass wedding. Sort of how the marijuana legalization in Washington story evolved. It's just too in your face for me and dampens the achievement in my eyes.

That's how I feel. Get married in the church. Get whatever privileges the church affords you. The US government will offer domestic partnerships, unions whatever and they get all the rights and privileges that married couples have been getting. Marriage has been around longer than recorded history. So you can't really say it started with the church.
It would be a fair guess to say that it started when religious ceremony was a large part of the laws and governance of simple societies.

Marriage really *is* the piece of paper you sign that assigns various property and inheritance rights to the parties involved.

People who get married in civil ceremonies sans religious trappings will not stop calling or considering themselves "married".

That word is not gonna go away.

Regardless, socially tolerated acceptance of marriage equality discrimination will be going the way of the anti-miscegenation dodo within a generation or two, yeah.

2012-12-09 07:44:15 PM

Lolpwnt: It could be argued that the 1st just applies to preventing an official "Church of the USA" deal like the church of england was.

That's not the way the Supreme Court sees it.
For a long time now, the 1st Amendment has prohibited both:
- the establishment of a national religion
- the legal preference any religion over another

Establishing the Christian definition of marriage -- or even Christian / Muslim / Jewish / Mormon -- lawfully raises those religions over any other religion that specifically allows or even that is indifferent to gay marriages by giving their religious values more legal protections than others.

Lolpwnt: The real question is: why do we allow the government (at the state or federal level) to regulate marriage at all? All it is is a ceremony where two people say "I really like this other person!" WTF does the .gov have to do with that at all?

Because legal marriage involves all sorts of legal rights and privileges -- and no they CAN'T all be replicated with legal contracts. Spousal privilege in a court of law, tax filing, hospital visitation, end-of-life decisions, legal guardianship, adoption and child custody considerations... lots and lots of things have come up over the years in court that are now well-established legal precedents that apply explicitly to married couples. There needs to be a legal state and federal recognition of marriage for any of those rulings to make any sense or be applicable at all.

God-is-a-Taco: Random wedding facts off the top of my head:

Okay that one goes into the 'people are inherently territorial and tend towards violence' file more than the "people are weird" one..

Uranus Megahertz: fknra: leave marriage to the church where it started. use the term domestic partner in all governmental forms in reference to the family unit and the issue goes away in a generation or two.

That's how I feel. Get married in the church. Get whatever privileges the church affords you. The US government will offer domestic partnerships, unions whatever and they get all the rights and privileges that married couples have been getting. You religious people don't like gays getting united than don't get one yourself. You have your marriage, go away and have babies. The rest of us will be going forward with love and respect.

And then suddenly all atheists and all people not married in a church wouldn't be "married" any more? Because a bunch of religious people have decided that "marriage" is *their* word and the government can't use it? Because the government should give a rat's ass what any religion wants from it, per the First Amendment? Yeah, that seems like a great idea.

That's not the way the Supreme Court sees it.
For a long time now, the 1st Amendment has prohibited both:
- the establishment of a national religion

Establishing the Christian definition of marriage -- or even Christian / Muslim / Jewish / Mormon -- lawfully raises those religions over any other religion that specifically allows or even that is indifferent to gay marriages by giving their religious values more legal protections than others.

I think that's what I'm getting at. These legal benefits should be awarded to all unions, providing both parties are willing. This is one of the simplest debates that somehow people (even those at the top of our judicial system) can't separate the concept of church and state. Marriage is all or none or it needs to be redefined.

If a church thinks gay marriage is wrong, then so be it. You ain't gettin' married there.

It is not logical to believe gays deserve equal rights but then place so much value to terminology that it costs money, time, and inequality to protect the stability of a noun.

This is an even less logical stance when one learns the actual history of marriage and not merely a talking point some pundit told them.

Even IF one cared that much about terminology, a world woth gay and straight marriage is still an improvment over one with inequality. It doesn't matter if his optimal scenario of civil unions is yet better, he should still be happy for the gays' win here.

Lolpwnt: Gawdzila: I'm just glad the Supreme Court is finally going to hear these cases so we can toss this government-sponsored homophobia bullsh*t into the can for good.

Little known fact: that was the original intent of the First Amendment, and it applied only to the federal government. Pennsylvania actually had a state church for a while, as did (I think) Rhode Island. It wasn't until the Supreme Court incorporated the First via the Fourteenth that it applied to the states.

/See what I did there?

Your point is that gays should shut up and fade away. We're saying no, they shouldn't. They're fellow human beings and American citizens who have been treated like animals because of farktarded religious assholes and shiatbrained bigots. You're upset because they're celebrating the fact that they're now being treated as equal citizens.

No, I think they should shut up, be thankful that it's slowly starting to become a reality, and quietly push forward the initiative until it's nationwide and people forget about it all together.

I also think you are over glorifying the Gay struggle. You are only discriminated against as gay when you put it out there that you are gay. It isn't something that you cannot help but wear, like gender or race or age discrimination are.

It is more important that gays get to marry than it is for society to shield your fragile self from it.

Fark you, you wilfully ignorant piece of shiat. No, really, it's only that "I put it out there that I am gay" that my wife's insurance coverage through my work is taxed as income when the straight guys I work with get it for free for their wives. Somehow those 1,100+ rights and privileges granted to heterosexual couples will magically come my wife's and my way if we never, ever mention it - even though DOMA specifically prohibits it.

And fark you again for thinking that the only way I should live my life is to have to be silent and/or lie all the time. You are a real piece of work - that should be trashed.

Whatever - but the important thing is BOTH are marriages. Equal, and just. It must be sad to live in your world where you spend all of your time and energy checking your ass to make sure that you can presume to be better than your equals. Plus, knowing deep down it'll never get better - you'll never have the fictional paradise where everyone "else" keeps the place you've set for them. Without that control, you JUST KNOW that you're nothing, and that lack of control (or at least it's presumed loss, since you never really ever possessed it) overwhelms so much of your life that you really can't ever be truly happy. You'll never have my respect - but for what it's worth you can have my pity.

Yup, my sentiments entirely.

There are no good reasons for marriage - unless you need a passport. Weddings are all about attention whoring, as far as I can see.

I hope you never find out the hard way how very wrong that can be.

Not so "cool story sis" time:

Straight friends of mine had lived together for seven years. Her parents had written her off years ago and had not spoken to her in the last five years. She died suddenly and unexpectedly in their apartment one evening, and the medical examiner's people taking her away was the last time he saw her.

The next morning when he tried to get information from the coroner's office, he was told that he had no right to any information concerning her, nor any right to see her. Her parents had been informed and had arranged for her cremation and they did not wish him to have any access, nor was he allowed to have the ring she had been wearing that he had given her for their 5th anniversary.

There was no memorial service or funeral that anybody could find out about, and nobody knows where her body is now.

No marriage == no rights, at least in states like NYS that do not recognize common-law situations.

Poo_Fight: Irish Catholic conservative here, can someone tell me how same sex marriage is bad for me or families or the country? What's the argument? Because for the life of me, I can't figure it out.

If two people love each other and want to take care of each other more power to them. Who am I to interfere with that? Like I said, I'm conservative, but I don't get the whole 'gay people are bad/evil etc.' thing.

Because our religion believes that it's an abomination to humanity. That's it, that's all. That since gays cannot be married within the Church, then any sexual acts are then outside of the bonds of marriage (which is a Catholic no-no).

So, in essence, the Catholics have created a catch-22 for gay and lesbians. They are not sinners unless they act on their sexual impulses, but in order to act sexually, they need to be married, but the Church says they can't get married.

It's dumb, it's antiquated, and it makes about as much sense as the Vatican's prohibition on prophylactics and birth control.

In short, I'm Catholic, but technically not because I disagree with the Church on many of their social issues. But, whatever, most Catholics are the same way. The Vatican has been trying to keep the Church's shiat together for the better portion of the last century, but the problem is US Catholicism is awfully liberal compared to the Vatican.

/Just be a good person ... if there is a God, I doubt he's going to be a vindictive prick because you had sex before you were married, you used a condom, or you believe that man/man or woman/woman love is right and good. If God is really that way, well, rest assured that you'll be in good company with the majority of everyone else in this world in Hell.

I have no flipping idea when this will happen in my state, which is a f--king shame, but for all the incredible BS committed gay couples have to go through - benefits spouses don't get, money to lawyers so they can try to make sure their kids will be protected if one partner dies, etc., - for all that I've seen friends and acquaintances struggle with because of discriminating assholes - I will probably be standing outside my City Hall when they can marry in my state.

Take it one state at a time. Make it successful where each opportunity is given (ie low divorce rates, pay your taxes) and by the time it reaches the federal level there will be no attention paid to it. No opposition either. It will just be another law.

I DNWTFV - but were the ceremonies in there specifically religious? That was not the case in NY in any of the public buildings that I was aware of.

And no, I am a liberal and in a same sex marriage and have an issue with it if there were ministers in there with religious ceremonies if that is not standard practice on any other day.

Marriage is primarily about property rights and parental rights where the government is concerned. You would rather that every couple that wants to set those relationships up have to pay out the ass for lawyers? I suspect we would have a lot of couples that never get married and a lot of court time wasted trying to sort through what happens when a partner dies and there isn't a will and there isn't a standard set of contractual standards already set in place.

That does not make a lot of sense because the poorer people will still live together and will be the ones least likely to shell out for all the paperwork making it extremely expensive to the government in terms of court time.

You know you can already get a government marriage without god or a marriage under god without telling the government right?

The only overlap is the term and the convenience extended to the church giving their marriages recognition if they want it. The latter is something no one is against. The former... Well you have a lot of work to do if you want to eliminate multiple definitions for words.

Gdalescrboz: Oh wow, sweet, awesome. Where are the liberals biatching about a religious ceremony being held in a public building?

Religion is being used for good this time.

True, but if you put up a nativity scene, holy shiat is that evil

I'm not against that either, as long as other religions get to have their scenes up as well. Unfortunately, Christians seem to think that they're the only ones allowed to do such things.

Let's face it. Liberals are no different than the religious right they can't stand. They are against something until it's somethign they support, then it's ok. Just like in this instance. They convince themselves otherwise, but they are lying to themsleves.

Which is comendable; but he said, and I quote, "Religion is being used for good this time."

ciberido: Lolpwnt: The real question is: why do we allow the government (at the state or federal level) to regulate marriage at all? All it is is a ceremony where two people say "I really like this other person!" WTF does the .gov have to do with that at all?

Well, since you asked, Wikipedia has a list of what the government has to do with it.

Going though a related thing. Have a woman life partner and son, but can't take any of the tax benefits. It's actually worse because the state comes after me for child support even though I support them both.

The government tried to sue me, but my woman showed them my checks to get out of it. farking government bastards.

/Very in tune with non-married couples who get screwed....

I'm late getting on the computer and onto Fark so I'm just getting to this story, but my congratulations to all of the newly wedded couples!!

My daughter will be marrying her girlfriend some time while she works on her 2nd Masters degree or Ph.D (her girlfriend already has her Ph.D). I want them to have the same rights, privileges and protections as different gendered couples (as her father and I did) have. Equal protection under the law, religious and cultural prejudices, falsehoods and bullshiat be damned!!!!!

2012-12-09 10:01:01 PM

Miss Stein: There's also a huge crowd outside City Hall, cheering each newly wedded couple, handing them flowers and throwing rice as they walk down the steps. It's so beautiful to watch. I love my blue state.

Well why don't you gay marry it!

You'll never have my respect - but for what it's worth you can have my pity.

leave marriage to the church where it started. use the term domestic partner in all governmental forms in reference to the family unit and the issue goes away in a generation or two.

The only flaw in your argument is that marriage didn't start with the church, and even in the assbackwards parts of the US of A, you aren't legally married unless the civil paper work is done. Weddings take place in a church, the act of marriage takes place on paper.

Yeah this. You can 'get married; about until the county clerk files the paperwork you aren't married. And note when you get divorced, or you die and leave an estate, church doesn't have dick all to do with that.

I tend to look at marriage the opposite way many people do. Getting married means forcing the rest of society to recognize the promise you've made. I've read here and there that this in the west goes back to attempts by the church and the states to break the power of tribal leaders. Partly by taking away their power to decide who would get married.

Smackledorfer: Uranus Megahertz: austerity101: And then suddenly all atheists and all people not married in a church wouldn't be "married" any more? Because a bunch of religious people have decided that "marriage" is *their* word and the government can't use it? Because the government should give a rat's ass what any religion wants from it, per the First Amendment? Yeah, that seems like a great idea.

Those that got married at a courthouse or other locale officiated by a government official would be cool. If you were married in a church, a religious institution or even by a religious official and you want continue to enjoy the rights and privileges that the states allow, then you both must apply for a civil union/domestic partnership.
Yeah, it'll be a cluster-fyck for a year at the court offices but government will be out of the church and vice-versa.

Isn't that already how it works? I mean, you have to have a representative of the state recognize your marriage. It just happens that many ministers are designated to do this; getting married in a church per se has no bearing on the legal recognition of your union.

as far as I know, yes. Which ultimately means all the "derp government shouldn't care about marriage, let everyone have a civil union" folks are suggesting no meaningful change. Some of those folks seem to think that the anti-gay lobbies actually care about the word marriage and would roll right over if the civil union options was put forth - something I completely disagree with. Most just use it as a last stand against equality for gays while trying to pretend they aren't bigots.

Then you have the last few people like our libertarian in this thread saying he wants no form of marriage acknowledged by the government. Of course if push came to shove I'm sure any number of powers granted by a union would be things he does support and he will simply suggest every partnership spend boatloads of time and money drawing up the appropriate legal papers for those various powers. By the time we are done it probably costs people more than any of the other costs of the government running marriage-related stuff. If we weren't talking libertarians I wouldn't believe the guy was serious in his views, but that group includes some pretty high levels of crazy.

The funniest part is that we still see people making these half-assed arguments of 'I'd rather see X than a gay MARRIAGE' in a thread in which we see people allowed to have a homosexual marriage. Any shred of honest concern behind the whole 'it'd be easier to get your rights under a civil union' style argument pretty much flew out the door when honest-to-god real marriage is now legal.

It's over bigots: you are losing, and soon you will have lost. And just like blacks will never be slaves again (prison system notwithstanding), you will never take those rights away from gays after they get them. And your kids will grow up not giving a fark about what stupid superstitions you believe. Game over, you lost.

I use a "strike" system, so for me it goes red 5, red 4 ... red 1, and then sometime after that they go on ignore.

But if they do anything to redeem themselves, they go into the orange or yellow zone. I have a lot of farkers farkied as "mixed" in this way Most people on Fark will eventually say something worth listening to, if you wait long enough.

Then, of course, there's this thread.

llachlan: ciberido: Dimensio: An examination of the disastrous consequences that have resulted from legal same-sex "marriage" in Canada and in Massachusetts is sufficient to understand the rationale behind supporting retaining the traditional definition of "one man and one woman" as marriage.

Please de-Poe-enate for me. And provide a link if you're serious.

It took me a minute (mostly cause I'm Canadian, and I was like, what disastrous consequences?) to realize that his point is that there is no rationale to retaining the traditional definition. Dimensio's post is a thing of beauty - like the marriages being streamed.

Yes, I thought that, but I also believe in what I call "ciberido's first law", "There is no idea so ridiculous that there does not exist anybody, anywhere, who champions it."

/Yes, I'm conceited enough to name a "law" after myself
//But in my defense, only because I don't know a better name/quote for it
///I'm sure someone wrote this "law" down long before I did.

Galvatron Zero: Poo_Fight: seadoo2006: /Just be a good person

Wow, that is word for word what my devout Catholic Mother would tell me when I questioned our religion. She would sum it up by saying "Just be a good person. God knows you." She would also constantly remind me not to judge other people for who they are. "Listen!" she would exclaim "We are ALL just as god made us."

DAMN, I miss her...

Sounds like if there really is a God, he greeted her at the gate. :)

Thank you, Galvatron Zero.

Saruman_W: Ugh.. Humanity sickens me more and more every day.

Which part of humanity, the ones finally being treated as equal American citizens and human beings whose only "crime" is loving people of the same gender, or the ones who use religion and their own petty bigotry to try to keep the former ones as sub-human?
