Bah last shave or haircut I received was back in 1993, when is the fad gonna swing around to the Grizzly Adams look again?

/Charge 20 or 2,000 for a shave and a haircut, won't effect me either way.

So now hipsters have discovered they joy of a high and tight? I recently read an article on slate about how hipsters "discovered" hunting. Guns and high and tights, instead of paying for it like a bunch of idiots, why don't they join the Marines like the rest of us and get paid for it? For the record I preferred the low reg fro. Being forced to get a hipster haircut took the coolness out of it I guess. As for paying $75 for a haircut and a shot, hipsters in the Camp Pendleton area can go full on Marine and pay $10 for a haircut and $10 for the cheapest bottle of Kentucky deluxe at the liquor store that will be within 1 block of the barber. Then they can be completely ironic and go to pt at 05:30 after having stayed up drinking until 03:30. Completely ironic, physical fitness while completely wasted. Living at camp horno (yeah 1st Marines) is like living in 1820 so that dude that thought we was cool for living like its 1920 is a complete chump. That's 100 years in the future man.

The guy in the photograph in the frame is George Ohr, known as the "Mad potter of Biloxi". Were he alive today, he'd be a Farker. Or a reality show star.

Radioactive Ass: El_Frijole_Blanco: Damned hipsters I have been getting a straight razor shave and flat top for 20 years and in that time the cost has gone from $15 to $25 and now these idiots are paying $75

Two bits is 25 cents so that would be $150.

600/2*0.25=75

Vlahos offers everyone shots of Bulleit rye bourbon and doughnuts from Pizzaiolo, the restaurant next door.
San Francisco apparently has pretty liberal laws on where alcohol may be served. Even if not for profit, it's a commercial establishment.

Hipsters aside. I hope this increases the number of men going to barbers and therefore increases the number of men going through barber school. I am concerned the profession will die out and I will be forced to to to a... salon.

Finally convinced by friend to stop going to Cost Cutters. He complained that only one in three did a good job and his neck was always fuzzy. I told him my barber would cut his hair perfectly every time, use a straight razer on his neck and put a hot towel on his scalp for two bucks more.

I've been shaving with a straight razor for a while now, on the rare occasion I shave. I'm always convinced there's going to be an earthquake *just* as I'm finishing up on my neck.

TBH I don't really see the attraction. I can shave myself, thanks, and I've never had a problem getting whatever haircut I want for $15-18. Who farking cares if I have to sit next to some chick getting highlights? I'm only going to be there for 20 minutes. Honestly this seems like a consequence of the pendulum swinging back to some retro "manly man" style from that whole metrosexual travesty. It's a fashion fad like any other; the whole prohibition-era schtick is just the new coolest thing.

Most barber shops do that. This article must have been written by some idiot who only goes to supercuts or some other non-barber place staffed by "stylists."

But that's what hipsters do, they take something that the rest of the world has known about for years and make it "cool" because it's "ironic." See PBR, for example. What's next, are the hipsters are all going to start eating at McDonalds and using Internet Explorer?

They're so special and unique, those hipsters.

ReapTheChaos: You pay $25 for a shave and a haircut? My barber does that for $8.50 and he throws in a scalp, neck and shoulder massage that will put you to sleep for free.

You can't find a plain old haircut in San Francisco for less than $10 (shave not included). I get a very simple cut (#4 comb on the clipper and then a taper on the back and sides) which 'should' take all of five minutes. At a traditional barber shop that would take 20 minutes and a whole lot of talking for $15 ten years ago. I quit going there because it was wasting my time (for the extended time for the cut itself plus the extra waiting time for the guys ahead of me). Now I go to a cheap Asian place where the barbers can barely speak english. $10 plus a 2 buck tip.

/I got the exact same haircut when I was in the navy for four bucks and five minutes of time in the chair so I know that it can be done.

Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc: Weird to read about this. I'd gone to a regular "barber" shop with straight razors, shoe-shine guy, and incredibly old barbers since my mother took me around when I started walking. Did they all vanish across America when I wasn't looking?

They're a dying breed. Finding an actual barber shop rather than a stylist's salon is a significant achievement these days.

Wait, aren't these clients tech hipsters? Shouldn't a shave and a haircut be 1,024 bits?
