Jack White argued that Meg White is what made White Stripes what it was. Because Jack White had to play around the limitations of Meg White, the band achieved a style that would never be there with a more proficient drummer. Like in all artistic endeavor, constraints make you more creative.

I think she's a great drummer.

She keeps a beat.  No need for 10,000-piece all the gongs in the over-kill kit wankery.

The minimalism fits the White Stripes sound perfectly IMHO.

As a really great guitar player, sorry if you don't believe me, Jack White is a genius. If you don't get it, that is your problem. Secondly, Meg never wanted to be in a band and she didn't like Jack the entire time they were famous. Meg liked traveling and her friends. Her drumming was the core reason that people like The White Stripes even if they claim it is bad... It isn't bad, it is original, and not a product of being bad.

Agreed and in my NOT so humble opinion.

Jack White is the closest thing to a 'Dylan' to come along in a loooooong time. The guy's a talented rocker, of that there is no doubt.

LemSkroob: so the dub-step set that posts here have no grasp on what real instruments played by humans sounds like.

It doesn't appear anyone in any kind of modern music set are the ones who hate the White Stripes. Seems to be the old school metal and classic rock types, ya know, Farkers.

They dont fine-tune and over-produce everything they do in a computer to be "perfect sound" like 99% of the music out there today, so the dub-step set that posts here have no grasp on what real instruments played by humans sounds like. If you don;t have 90+ bpm perfectly timed to a metronome, you are doming something wrong, apparently.

sat1va: I always found them kind of meh, but then I never really gave them a chance. When some magazine or website claimed Jack White was one of the greatest guitar players to ever live I was pretty floored by that claim because nothing he's ever done has stood out for me. I did a bit of searching to see if I could find him demonstrating this skill and I came up short. Perhaps a farker can point me to something that supports the claim.

It really depends on what you consider skill. Jack White isn't a shredder, and he doesn't play super fast or super intricate solos. He plays interesting solos that don't just follow the norms most guitarists follow. His solos in this video are not like "wow, how did he pull that off" but they are relatively unique. And in this video you can see him playing guitar and a keyboard at the same time, which is skillful (although he's playing a fairly avante garde part on the keyboard).

Obviously, this type of skill is going to be divisive, because some people will really appreciate it and love it, and other people won't appreciate it and won't find any of what they are looking for (standard musical prowess) and will hate it.

If you all agree their music didn't ask much in the way of competence from a drummer, and Jack White basically says she was always bored in the studio, then how exactly can you say she's a bad drummer? Doesn't that all just add up to her never being asked to do anything interesting drumming-wise, and being upset about it? The most you can really say is that you never saw her play anything complicated, but wasn't that the whole point and isn't that the whole complaint against the WS as a band; that they never played anything complicated? Some of you folks sound less like you object to her drumming and more like you object to a woman getting behind a set of drums.

That's funny "we were good, because she was so bad."

not 'bad', 'raw'. He didnt want a rehearsed sound. WS would not have had the same feel if you had Neil Peart back there. Its blues. you dont need to be technically perfect.

I had a bit more respect for him after watching It Might Get Loud. Granted, he was still seriously outclassed by the other two, but he held his own pretty well.

I agree. Her drumming is part of what made the White Stripes different and special. Who cares if she wasn't Neil Peart. It was rockin' and minimalistic. It's about what you DON'T play v.s. what you do, just like in jazz.

also,
this is relevant and very spot on:

Really, she doesn't. I mean, it's ok to not have the meter of a click-track, but she really did sound like any kid who has played drums for 3 weeks and then just stayed that way.
Kit pieces has nothing to do with it.

Yet, in the context of The White Stripes, it worked perfectly and that's all that matters.

I hadn't really listened to anything Jack White had done until I saw him and his all female and male bands on Later...with Jools Holland. I was impressed. Not sure what the recordings sound like, but live, it had good energy.

The White Stripes were a pretty good band, nothing groundbreaking or extraordinary, but it's good music, fun to listen to. As far as minimalism goes though, it's doubtful that anybody will ever top what Morphine did.

She's a terrible drummer, but all in all her terribleness was fine for the gritty, minimalist White Stripes "sound". Keep the same songs but someone competent behind the kit, and they wouldn't sound "better" imho, just different.

/I like The Raconteurs more. Still not sure what to make of The Dead Weather.
