This is how I discovered The White Stripes.

HBK: padraig: SnarfVader: I couldn't agree more. You can hear the disparity. He would've been better off with a drum machine.

Jack White argued that Meg White is what made White Stripes what it was. Because Jack White had to play around the limitations of Meg White, the band achieved a style that would never be there with a more proficient drummer. Like in all artistic endeavor, constraints make you more creative.

That's funny "we were good, because she was so bad."

not 'bad', 'raw'. He didnt want a rehearsed sound. WS would not have had the same feel if you had Neil Peart back there. Its blues. you dont need to be technically perfect.

FunkOut: There's a blues/punk duo named The Pack A.D. from Vancouver. I've played them for people, been asked if it was The White Stripes and had to tell them no, because there's a bit more drumming going on and also, that's a chick singing.

The Pack A.D. - Sirens

The Pack A.D. - Crazy - yeah, this one is probably NSFW

a little more smoothed out and missing the grit, but yeah.

FunkOut: Third_Uncle_Eno: I agree. Her drumming is part of what made the White Stripes different and special. Who cares if she wasn't Neil Peart. It was rockin' and minimalistic. It's about what you DON'T play v.s. what you do, just like in jazz.

No no no! Less is not more, more is more, and all guitarists should aspire to play like Yngwie Malmsteen!

I enjoy malmsteen, but I also like the white stripes. You got a problem with that?

The minimalism fits the White Stripes sound perfectly IMHO.

Agreed and in my NOT so humble opinion.

Jack White is the closest thing to a 'Dylan' to come along in a loooooong time. The guy's a talented rocker, of that there is no doubt.

Beats the hell out of me. Maybe 'cause there aren't going to be any new albums to prove them wrong?  I've seen roughly 100,000 people get down to Seven Nation Army so I'd say it's a minority opinion (at least the stadium doesn't have commercials, yet)

I was in a band in Detroit in the late 90's-early 2000's when the WS were breaking. We heard about this strange band that had two members and no bass. "WTF!" we thought, "They must be shiat." Then they started getting major local airplay and playing some high profile gigs and I realized Jack White was an unstoppable force.

He ended up leaving Detroit aftern knocking da fark out a poser from another Detroit "garage band" and declaring he got no luv fo' ho's he out da door and moved to Nashville.

/I wish I moved to Nashville
//Then I'd have nice things

I won't say she's a bad drummer, but I will say that there is nothing in the White Stripes catalog that couldn't be played by a bad drummer.

She's fine for what they do. Boringly competent drummer.

Also, The Dead Weather are clearly the best band involving Jack White, in which, oddly enough, he's a pretty great drummer. Funny how that worked out.

This.

Meg has huge, floppy boobs, but she's already forming the multichin, and in 10 years, gravity will not be her ally.

She was a butter-drumming. A self-disinterested novelty.

I can't say I care much for their music, but I like watching bouncing floppy boobies, and she's got a kind of cuteness to her in the right light.

If you all agree their music didn't ask much in the way of competence from a drummer, and Jack White basically says she was always bored in the studio, then how exactly can you say she's a bad drummer? Doesn't that all just add up to her never being asked to do anything interesting drumming-wise, and being upset about it? The most you can really say is that you never saw her play anything complicated, but wasn't that the whole point and isn't that the whole complaint against the WS as a band; that they never played anything complicated? Some of you folks sound less like you object to her drumming and more like you object to a woman getting behind a set of drums.

White Stripes, meh. They were probably the best of that weird crop of loser rock bands that were foisted upon us in the early 2000's by a bunch of aging rock critics who were tired of rap and electronic music and wanted the ROCK to come back in any way it could. Remember the Vines? The Hives? The Strokes? They were sold as the new Ramones, the new Stones, the next Nirvana. And they were all crap.

I'll never stop sneering at my old coworkers who came to me and said "oh, my god, the Strokes album is the best thing i've ever heard, i can't stop listening to it!" and two months later they disavowed ever liking it.

RIP fake crappy rock.

Marvelous 3 was the best late 90s-early 2000s rock band around... Sadly, they didn't last near long enough. Thankfully, the world still has the talents of Butch Walker.

Or it could have been that she wasn't interested in drumming at all, but was interested in riding the tails of a fairly easy career of mediocrity for some cash quick, and had no desire or intention of doing anything else.

So she was disinterested, half-assed, bored, and semi eye candy (which would explain the constant no-bra status).
