Great Beer, but it's been around for years

Subby, you get a kick to the nads for that, and I really really REALLY hope you are not Canadian.

It's a great beer that's been around for years. I kind of suspect the whole 2012 apocalypse thing was orchestrated by lazy journalists.

I always thought "Fin du Monde" referred more to Quebec's geographical location than a time, especially given the label.

That said, it is an outstanding beer that you don't need an excuse to drink. I encourage everyone to try both Fin du Monde and Maudite from Unibroue.

It really is great.CSB and all, but the first time I had it I was living in New England and a buddy needed help with some hiking trail maintenance and offered to buy me a sandwich and the best beer I've ever had if I helped. We went out and cleared fallen trees all day and at the end went to a little shop in New Hampshire and he bought me a nice club sandwich and a Fin du Monde, I don't remember what he got, but we enjoyed our simple fare on the store's picnic bench. A great day.

True, I would have been happy with a high life, but being treated to a fin du monde was something special.

A short walk from the University residence where I lived when I was at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, there was a place called "Fin du Monde". I was there for July 4th fireworks once. Apparently the Good Citizens of Geneva have a Big City idea of geography. Any place you can't walk in ten minutes is the edge of the world. The place where the sidewalk ends is inconceivably distant for many big city people. In the case of New Yorkers, it is probably in Boston, MA, but that's beside the point.

I can't blame them. I call everything to the West of Bronson Street the Wilderness myself. In the other three directions, the wilderness starts just the other side of a university (Ottawa, Carleton, that one in Quebec).

I've never had Fin du Monde beer although I've heard of it over the years. Quebec does make some good beer, cheese, etc. The French insistance on quality in food and drink is strong. They may be a bit parochial, however, seeing as all of the restaurants with Michelin stars in Canada were in Quebec the last time I checked, except for one and that one was Saint Boniface, Mantitoba, which sort of makes my point as this is the most French place Manitoba and possibly the West.

bmfderek: I'm not a beer snob, but I know and appreciate beers, but I've never had a Belgian beer that I like. I know I'm supposed to like them, but they all seem to have an underlying sour taste. I generally like very malty British ales and German bocks.

My husband went out and bought beer without me and expressed shock when he poured out a large can of German beer and it was as black as espresso. "You're not aware of what schwarzbock means, are you?"

That might be why I like them so much. I was big on IPAs for a while, but I'm taking a break from those and trying out some other styles. I've always liked La Fin du Monde and other Belgian-style beers, and now I'm really getting into Lambics.

If you want to give Belgian beer another shot and aren't into the sour, try Duvel. It's fairly light, no sourness, but very flavorful.

I knew a guy who could drink one of those in 24 hours, with a fifth as a kicker. He could also grow a full beard over the weekend. He was Lebanese by ancestry. Wonder where he is now?

My first experience with a Rauchbier came from picking an option at random from the chalkboard listing of a brewery's monthly specials (Iron Hill Brewery in Newark, DE). The first taste was surprising, but I'm very glad I tried it, as I loved it. It seems to be a hard to find style, but I actually haven't looked very hard lately, maybe I'll make that my project this week.

Haha, was the first thing that came to mind when I put beer and the end of the world together. Its not a bad beer, but I prefer the Eclipse Black IPA I'm drinking right now.
