Being second in command of al-Qaida is like being the world's oldest person, you know it ain't going to lost long, and you know how it's going to end.

STRYPERSWINE: If only the jihadists who started the war were anti-war.

I'm not anti-war, I'm anti-dumb-war-strategy.

Drone strikes are a brilliant idea. Why risk the lives of our soldiers and spend billions upon billions keeping tens of thousands of them in the middle of the desert for years when we can attack the enemy through surgical strikes with remote controlled planes?

Let's not waste our time and money trying to build nations. If there's a threat, send some planes, drones, and ships to blow it up, and then go back home.

Mrtraveler01: The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves: I'm waiting for Obama's heartfelt apology for wiping out Assad and his entire family.

I'm still waiting for the apology from Obama for killing Bin Laden.

War Criminal and such...

/not serious

Not a war-crime (unless they deliberately executed, even if Osama tried to surrender) but I really was disappointed they killed him. Not that the Earth is not a better place with him lying a few fathoms down in the persian gulf, but it would have been much better, both politically and morally, to take him alive, make the coont stand trial, and let him rot in a very small box for the next 20+ years.

Rule of law and all that..

I'm sure we can silence their ojections with a few more truckloads of money. They are our friends, after all

These drones are what they call a "disruptive technology" in Silicon Valley. Kinda like online stores disrupt the book retailing business.

The drones are disrupting the military-industrial complex. This war is dirt cheap. We don't need the Pentagon any more. The CIA can get'er done for almost nothing.

Mrtraveler01: He mainly got it for being elected and putting an end to the disastrous Neocon policies of his not being his predecessor.

He should have politely turned it down.

In any case -- while I admit I haven't paid attention to the details -- how are the drone strikes any different from some commandos going in? Is it assumed they'd inflict less collateral damage? If so, only at the cost of more dead commandos.

War sux, and inevitably innocents die. That's why you don't get into unnecessary wars (ahem), and you wrap up the necessary ones in less than 11+ years. In the mean time, it's wabbit season. Deal with it.

Just sayin'

Obama did more to fight terrorism in general and Al-Qaeda in particular in one term than Bush, or any other Republican, could have accomplished in 8 lifetimes.

Technically, he had it wrapped up even before becoming president as the voting was done before hand. However, I fully support using drones to take out terrorists. Yes, there will be casualties -- there always are in war, but you need to break an egg to make an omelet. If the Middle East is to ever get better (which is a long shot) it will need to remove elements that made it get so bad in the first place.

I agree. Ground assaults against entrenched paramilitary guerrilla forces have never gone well for the attacking force. Let's keep the majority of our soldiers out of harms way, and just keep some ships and a few bases with some planes and drones around the area, along with plenty of CIA and intelligence operatives who can suss out who and where the bad guys are. When we find one, or when someone with an agenda that runs counter to ours gets too powerful, handle it with a drone strike.

I agree. That was probably premature.

One shudders to think how the US would be doing foreign policy wise, with McCain or Romney in charge.
