soosh: Duck_of_Doom: soosh: the roads here can be snow/ice covered for weeks at a time. people (mostly) figure out how to drive in it before too long.

Dumb question: Do people use chains on their tires?

some people, when it gets really bad. a lot more studded tires or four wheel drive. I have an Infinity I30 that gets parked when the roads are bad, and then a Dodge Durango with big knobby tires that goes anywhere so long as the snow isn't all the way up to the differential and the tires can't touch the bottom.

I've got a shiatbox front wheel drive with snow tires and ABS/traction control and it's been more than adequate. knock on wood.

It also helps that I live a block from the Capitol and my job is on the main highway, so as long as I can get out of my driveway, I've got clear sailing.

Hell, if I can navigate the quarter block to Main Street I can take a sled to work.

My sister's relatively non-religious husband used this song as his exit processional at their wedding.

I just now realized the brilliance of his trolling. (Or not, he's a big Beatles fan.)

yeah, I really like having all wheel drive. I've driven a sh*tty FWD mini van, a rear-wheel drive GEO Tracker, a couple of old full-sized Jeeps, a Subaru Forester, and now the Durango and the Infiniti, and I really appreciate the option of 4WD. Also I do about four runs up to the ski area a weekend with my kids.

soosh: tinfoil-hat maggie: Yea, I had to sorta learn when I was in Nashville during an ice storm and several snows, it's not fun when you're not used to it,.

I learned to drive in Oklahoma that would get those kind of ice storms, where everything is glazed with a half inch or more of ice and then snow on top of that.

We have then so rarely it's a learning curve every time.

Not generally. I have seen some around downtown though. The residential area in town is on the side of a mountain. From 4th st to 7th st is about 200ft gain in elevation. There are also some places like the road to the ski area that chains would be helpful, but mostly a good set of snow tires or studs are fine.

Thanks for the info guys. Love hearing about everyday life in different places.

Richard Cheese should have more national exposure. Such good stuff.

JK Wrangler, 2-door, 4WD, dinky wheelbase, 265/75 Firestone Destination all-terrains. Goes up Cordova Hill in 3/4 inch of ice while giving precisely zero farks. No studs needed. Most fun damn thing I've ever driven.

I've got the BF Goodrich All Terrains on my Durango, and they are awesome. When I had my Subaru, I would be driving that thing and not realize it was icy outside, and then twice fell on my ass getting out of the car, it was so slick.
