first day driving on my own, I got one sideways doing a u-turn at Treadwell Arena.

I also got a little loose on backloop heading from UAS towards Goat Hill last night... but I was probably going... what's the legal term? "too fast for conditions"...

But basically they are pretty good. Only issues are if you stop in deep snow or at the bottom of an icy grade.

Is the Juneau Fest some cocked up FD/Cop fundraiser that actually is a revival meeting? There was some blurb on the local cable news recently. Apparently they set it up as some sort of Firefighter/Police charity event and it turned out to be some loon revival or something based at RMI in Tampa (in an office park by the Interstate - our lady of MLK and 75). Around here they are known for making animal noises during their services.

You should go it will be a hoot, in more ways than one.

thankya!

hng, I've never driven anything large in the snow, but some of the most fun I've ever had in driving a car was being really high back in Oklahoma and doing donuts in the snow and ice in my 79 VW bus in a school parking lot late at night.

You're welcome : )

And I used to have a VW bus and I can't imagine doing that.

it was so much fun. one night, a few nights after the night I was really high, I was doing it again, and there was a cop watching me, and I was like "oh shiat" and just kinda drove off, but had to go right past him to get out of the lot and he was laughing his ass off when I left and didn't pull me over or anything.

hng: feckingmorons: Is the Juneau Fest some cocked up FD/Cop fundraiser that actually is a revival meeting? There was some blurb on the local cable news recently. Apparently they set it up as some sort of Firefighter/Police charity event and it turned out to be some loon revival or something based at RMI in Tampa (in an office park by the Interstate - our lady of MLK and 75). Around here they are known for making animal noises during their services.

You should go it will be a hoot, in more ways than one.

yup. that's what it is. I'd kind of like to go just to "win" free shiat.

I found something on the Empire site, apparently they are on to the South African Great White Healer and his barking of the Gospels.

I bet you get lots of free stuff if they can heal you of something. Do you have any Stevie Wonder glasses?

All the freaks in the world seem to come to or through Tampa. I really don't care for Florida. That and it was 77 degrees today. It is fecking December. Next week I'm going somewhere to play in snow, I'd rather be in Detroit, at least they have 4 seasons.

I think I could deal with that as long as the roads were cleared, but if we have an inch or more that sticks to the roads it quickly get's crushed into ice and is hell to drive on, especially since no one clears roads or knows how to drive on ice.

Anchorage can be even worse. A warm spell can cause it to rise above 32 F during the day, then drop below at night and glaze the hell out of everything.

Myself, I employ the Jeep Wrangler solution. Absolute blast to drive in the snow, and decent even on ice without studs.

Back home, usually in Jan/Feb, there are storms that come through and blanket the mountains surrounding Vegas with snow down to the 3,500' level (the city is at the 3,000' level on average). You wake up in the morning and the entire valley is ringed with white mountains. This happens about 2-3 times each winter. It's usually all melted up to perhaps 7,000' by the afternoon, but holy hell is that an amazing sight. It's also not hindering my morning commute, so that's nice.

some people, when it gets really bad. a lot more studded tires or four wheel drive. I have an Infinity I30 that gets parked when the roads are bad, and then a Dodge Durango with big knobby tires that goes anywhere so long as the snow isn't all the way up to the differential and the tires can't touch the bottom.

Which happened once, and sucked.

Clarinetist for these guys.

My senior year, I added a custom bulbed Moennig bore barrel and custom alloy bell. It made the clarinet look like a bong. Was once clocked at 123 dBa by an astonished student director.

I enjoyed living in Fairbanks. I was a kid, but I still enjoyed it. I have no interest in going back as I'll discover it was really a horrible shiathole. Kinda like when I tried to watch Speed Racer as an adult. Some things should be left in your childhood.

Not generally. I have seen some around downtown though. The residential area in town is on the side of a mountain. From 4th st to 7th st is about 200ft gain in elevation. There are also some places like the road to the ski area that chains would be helpful, but mostly a good set of snow tires or studs are fine.

Mostly studs. They are legal here. However, they rut the hell out of the roads (I come from Michigan where they're illegal for this reason.)

soosh: Duck_of_Doom: soosh: the roads here can be snow/ice covered for weeks at a time. people (mostly) figure out how to drive in it before too long.

Dumb question: Do people use chains on their tires?

some people, when it gets really bad. a lot more studded tires or four wheel drive. I have an Infinity I30 that gets parked when the roads are bad, and then a Dodge Durango with big knobby tires that goes anywhere so long as the snow isn't all the way up to the differential and the tires can't touch the bottom.

I've got a shiatbox front wheel drive with snow tires and ABS/traction control and it's been more than adequate. knock on wood.

It also helps that I live a block from the Capitol and my job is on the main highway, so as long as I can get out of my driveway, I've got clear sailing.

My sister's relatively non-religious husband used this song as his exit processional at their wedding.

I just now realized the brilliance of his trolling. (Or not, he's a big Beatles fan.)

yeah, I really like having all wheel drive. I've driven a sh*tty FWD mini van, a rear-wheel drive GEO Tracker, a couple of old full-sized Jeeps, a Subaru Forester, and now the Durango and the Infiniti, and I really appreciate the option of 4WD. Also I do about four runs up to the ski area a weekend with my kids.

soosh: tinfoil-hat maggie: Yea, I had to sorta learn when I was in Nashville during an ice storm and several snows, it's not fun when you're not used to it,.

I learned to drive in Oklahoma that would get those kind of ice storms, where everything is glazed with a half inch or more of ice and then snow on top of that.

We have then so rarely it's a learning curve every time.

Not generally. I have seen some around downtown though. The residential area in town is on the side of a mountain. From 4th st to 7th st is about 200ft gain in elevation. There are also some places like the road to the ski area that chains would be helpful, but mostly a good set of snow tires or studs are fine.

Thanks for the info guys. Love hearing about everyday life in different places.

Richard Cheese should have more national exposure. Such good stuff.

JK Wrangler, 2-door, 4WD, dinky wheelbase, 265/75 Firestone Destination all-terrains. Goes up Cordova Hill in 3/4 inch of ice while giving precisely zero farks. No studs needed. Most fun damn thing I've ever driven.

I've got the BF Goodrich All Terrains on my Durango, and they are awesome. When I had my Subaru, I would be driving that thing and not realize it was icy outside, and then twice fell on my ass getting out of the car, it was so slick.

It's not too bad, but it's blowing about 30mph, so the visibility is low. there's actually enough snow on the ground to give traction over the compressed snow/ice that was previously there, so it's easier to get around on a crutch and one leg that won't bend.

that's sea level. tomorrow morning, I get to drive my 14 year old kid up to the ski area at 1000 foot elevation so he can hike up another 1500 feet to the top to go snowboarding. here is a photo of him today:

as a kid growing up in Oklahoma, I wanted nothing more than to grow up in a mountain town. I spent a total of 7 days my entire high school at ski slopes and was so blown away. I wanted to move to Colorado after high school but college and life got in the way. When my oldest kid was born, I thought, how can I make sure he grows up somewhere cool that's not Oklahoma? So when he was 1 and a half, we moved to Alaska. Max, pictured, was born here. We found out the day after we got off the ferry from Washington state that we were going to have him, so he's an entirely Alaskan kid. he recently changed his religion on facebook from Catholic to Snowboarding, which made me all kinds of happy,

"Playmate to Jesus"  (NOT a religious song)

I like the song but I think this is better

tinfoil-hat maggie: Bathia_Mapes: soosh: tinfoil-hat maggie: Oh, fine something more upbeat from the Donnas Link

love love love the Donnas. I'll have to play some of their stuff soon.

Bathia_Mapes: That's makes me cold, just looking at it. Glad you made it home safely.

tinfoil-hat maggie: Yea I wouldn't drive in that if I didn't have to.

Glad you made it home safe and dumplings sounds good : )

It's not too bad, but it's blowing about 30mph, so the visibility is low. there's actually enough snow on the ground to give traction over the compressed snow/ice that was previously there, so it's easier to get around on a crutch and one leg that won't bend.

that's sea level. tomorrow morning, I get to drive my 14 year old kid up to the ski area at 1000 foot elevation so he can hike up another 1500 feet to the top to go snowboarding. here is a photo of him today:

Looks like he's having a lot of fun.

Also I think Switchblade Symphony may be to your liking if you don't know them already.

tinfoil-hat maggie: Something else you probably like

all awesome choices! i know Switchblade Symphony, and I know of Evanescense but haven't really listened to them, and never have heard of Lisa Germano, but I like her a lot!

chud21: First concert.

MY first concert was the Deep Purple - Machine Head tour.

A couple of months later I saw the Black Sabbath - Master of Reality tour....King Crimson was the opening act. It was also my first time tripping (Orange Sunshine FTMFW).

Jesus tap-dancing Christ...how did I survive long enough to become Grandpa Simpson?
