Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced that his cancer has returned and that he will undergo another surgery in Cuba.

So... when will the elections be held to fill the position held by the late President?

Vicepresident fills in his shoes for the next 6 years. His term is supposed to begin next year since he won the reelection this year.

Huge irresponsible jackass, but did a lot of good for Venezuela.

Frederick: Why the Hugo Chavez hate?

Personally, his restrictions on free press are one of the few things that keep him from earning the rare "benevolent dictator" badge.

Early on, his government seemed to be *the* example of Marxism done right, but he crossed the line from Marxism to dictatorship some time ago.

All in all, however, he's done pretty good by his people and doesn't deserve the knee jerk hate most of us have been fed just because he's a (*gasp*) Communist.

For the same reason people hate any other dictator.

This man has no redeemable qualities any longer.

And except for that whole genocide and war thing, Hitler did a lot of good for Germany too. Why don't we sing his praises and gloss over the bad things, because he did so much good. The only thing stopping Chavez from being a murdering maniac like every other two bit dictator is that he hasn't ever managed to cement his power quite that far. He would be every bit the monster that every other communist is if he could just get that far. Every... and I mean every indication is that he is going precisely that direction.

All that said, there are far worse dictators in the world (ie, Putin) who we consider friends and who don't get half the hate that Chavez does. I don't like what he's done to the press or their election system, but his enemies don't die of Polonium poisoning or simply disappear.

So he'shiatler without the genocide and the total war? Does he at least have a secret police who's systemically silencing and killing dissidents because that's one of the few egregiously bad things about Hitler left.

Socialism gave Hugo Chavez cancer and the libtardos we have to deal with and who make our mustaches spin think it's a good idea for the USA! I know I am correct because Saint Nugent and Holy Pat Robertson said so. Also, Mitt Romney's tiny face appeared in my chimichangas. Just study it out.

I think stopping the press is reason enough to dislike him. He's also a huge narcissist though, he takes up hours of air time with his radio addresses where all he does is piss on other countries. I don't wish him cancer, but I'm certainly allowed to dislike a guy that usurped democracy in what was otherwise a nice country.

And it will be a nice country again. He hasn't had all the reporters shot, or held political prisoners under his soccer stadium to be tortured or had a gang of CIA-trained thugs terrorize his people or engaged in (and this is my favorite) a Pol Pot-style "kill everyone!" campaign.

Chavez survived an attempted coup funded and armed by America. If you're wondering why he's a little sour on America and Columbia (basically the Israel of South America) it's because they provided arms and cash to mercs working for corporate elites that wanted to throw him out and bring back the South American good-time 80s - torture, labour quashing, and tax-free status for corporate wealth.

This isn't a conspiracy theory, this actually happened. You'd think it would be brought up more by the media (lol).

Hugo Chavez is right up there with Best Korea for Dictator of the year....

If anyone has to ask why there would be shade or haterade thrown his way they are either ignorant of the country or don't know any Venezuelans.

I don't wish death or ill on folks, but I have to tell you that there will not be a lot of tears shed in Latin American when his time comes. His citizens don't realize how bad things are until they get distance and then they wonder how they didn't realize how bad things were all along. The fact that he is going to CUBA for medical treatment instead of institutions in his own or neighboring countries should speak volumes.

For an idea of why a commie pinko liberal like myself also dislikes Chávez, please see reports from Human Rights Watch. Chávez has opposed freedom of speech and a free press, intimidated and imprisoned political opponents, politicized the judiciary, reinforced widespread political discrimination, and retaliated against workers exercising their right to organize and strike. And the people's he's jailed get sent to some of the most horrendous prisons on this planet. (Chávez himself called them the "the gateway to the fifth circle of hell".)

I don't like seeing willful blindness on the part of American centrists and leftists who are willing to overlook authoritarian leadership and systemic human rights abuses. What exactly are you celebrating here - that Republicans don't like the man?
