Eh, I'll give it a shot.

Does it have anything to do with the video game series?

*clicks*

Crap.

Meh, Morgan Freeman looks pretty good in it.

/Files under maybe.

It's like...five different classic movie story lines mashed together for no farking reason.

2012-12-08 11:56:42 PM
I'm willing to watch it and be disappointed.

2012-12-09 12:04:56 AM
It's release date is within a month of the next Star Trek Movie and Iron Man 3. It will be clobbered a he box office.

WALL-E comparison is funny, but it looks pretty good to me.

Yeah, but who plays Martin Septim?

shower_in_my_socks: WALL-E comparison is funny, but it looks pretty good to me.

It might be fun to watch. Way too many sterotypes in one trailer, though. I can't see it being a classic.

2012-12-09 04:14:08 AM
The good news is, after watching the trailer you know all the major plot points and twists.

2012-12-09 04:22:20 AM
I'll just wait on the book.

2012-12-09 06:07:34 AM
Every mechanical thing in that trailer looks like an Apple product.
"Come fly with Tom Cruise in the new iplane!"

2012-12-09 06:35:02 AM
Is Tom going to be the carefree tough guy with a heart of gold again?

2012-12-09 06:40:38 AM
I want to hate Cruise, because he's nuttier than squirrel poop, but he's a pretty good actor and makes a pretty damn entertaining action film. The fact he apparently has an anti aging gene (or a portrait of an old man in his attic) makes him still viable for the role, so hey.

I'll watch it.

2012-12-09 06:55:40 AM
I think the only time Tom Cruise hasn't broken me out of a movie was in Tropic Thunder when I couldn't even tell it was him until the end

2012-12-09 06:59:21 AM
Not ONE person took an arrow to the knee in that trailer.

Perhaps it'll be in the sequel...

Whoever thought it was a good idea to have a chick with an annoying as shiat English accent yapping away should be fired.. Nothing more annoying then that accent in dramatic roles reciting stereotypical overly dramatic Hollywood action flick lines.

I also can't take Tom Cruise seriously in that stupid suite and the Tyco gun.

2012-12-09 07:52:35 AM
Well it's not a sequel, prequel, re-imagining, re-boot or comic book movie. Sadly, that's enough to earn my money nowadays.

April release though, they're not too confident with it.

2012-12-09 08:14:22 AM
...oh, it is based on a comic book. Well not a well known comic book anyway. There's nothing wrong with a movie having source material. It's not yet another Superman is what I was saying.

Heh, yeah, it does look like Wall-E at the start.

I don't think I've ever seen a Tom Cruise movie in the theater.. but that one might, just might, change that.

2012-12-09 08:32:11 AM
The trailer sucks donkey balls.

So will the movie.

/ Needs kissing scene with John Travolta cameo.

Meh. I'll wait for it to be available free at the library.

I'll pay the cash to see the new Star Trek movie in theaters, and I'll rent Iron Man 3 as soon as it hits DVD, but I'll be damned if I spend a red cent on anything that Tom Cruise is in. Still, It's science fiction, so I'll waste couple hours being disappointed.

Meh, wasn't this an episode of The Outer Limits (or several)? Where the humans were at war with aliens that turn out to actually be other humans? I don't hold out a lot of hope for anything Disney is putting out given their track record for making something that appeals to the broadest audience while being devoid of any original thought.

My money is on this being a flop.

Watchmen was released in March. Late March / early April is the new May, mainly for big budget non-sequel, non-reboot fare. Now, if it was February, I'd agree with you.

Good: From the Producers of...
Good: Some pasty white British chick
Good: Olga "I probably make the entire hotel stink of sweaty Ukranian sex when I'm there" Kurlyenko [sic]
Bad: Morgan Freeman, not because he sucks as an actor, but because the guy will be in anything, some of it good, some it bad, so this movie is a total crap shoot
Bad: Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, Esq.
Bad: From the Director of....
Bad: It is unlikely that this plot is that creative. Battlefield Earth meets Prometheus meets Wall-E meets Howard the Duck

Verdict: 7.4 Armond Whites out of 10 Armond Whites

Well the thing is they moved it from July. Although it's true that there are way too many movies to open everything in the summer and Hunger Games did well in April in part because it had little competition (except the blockbuster hit John Carter).

This movie has serious problems already, regardless of release date:

1) Not a reboot, sequel or remake - kinda important (sadly) for non-comedic, non-drama, non-horror movies these days.
2) No well-known source material for which it was based upon.
3) So far, no high-concept to base a marketing campaign on. It probably has some interesting plot twists, but no cool Matrix-esque universe to hint at in marketing

It may be a good movie, even a great movie (highly unlikely), but if I were doing the marketing on this, I'd start writing my resume because I doubt that anything they do is going to drive box office on this, unless they get some great reviews and great word of mouth.

Though, it could be the next District 9, but again, the high-concept came through in the marketing.

Oh, disappointed that you couldn't get Bradley Cooper for your script (I mean, you must be the screenwriter if you know how weak the story was that you wrote. Why do you hate you?)

Looks neat, and I liked Tron: Legacy, so the choice of director doesn't scare me. Might just have to give this a shot.

The trailer ran at least a minute too long with the killing of survivors thing. Could have ended with Morgan Freeman flicking out the match, and I would still be wondering and excited for the movie. Now... I dunno if I care as much about the film when I know Cruise will be disobeying orders, the aliens are likely not some great invaders, and the government or organization betrayed mankind and is covering it up.

While tom cruise is crazy as all get out he is still a damn fine actor. He doesn't really make many bad movies and I seem to like the majority of the movies he has been in. I may give it a shot.

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes

This copy is pretty ridiculous. I know you have to hype the film, but declaring your own product a "groundbreaking cinematic event" is the definition of hyperbole. And don't say, "from the director of..." if the director has only made "meh" level movies.

I think trailer folks that do that should be shot. I remember the trailer for Terminator 2 showing that Arnie was the good guy when the movie is clearly shot so that you won't know that until the hallway sequence in the mall where John has to choose between the cop and Arnie. In this trailer we know Wall-E is part of a team looking to clean up the last aliens and find survivors, he finds a seitch containing a group of Fremen lead by Morgan Freeman. Wall-E longs for his girlfriend who he then finds in stasis and wakes her up at which point his own drone support turns on him and tries to kill him, his woman, and the Fremen. He's clearly double-crossed by his search team, and the only thing left to find out is whether he's double crossed because the red head loved him and was jealous of him finding her, or he was inadvertantly working for the aliens the whole time. Maybe there's a big twist and he was dreaming the whole time, or he's an android.

Have you watched any movies from the "Golden Era" of cinema? Those people make the people today look like the Amish. And that's just what was reported, before everyone had their own video camera. Your sensibilities would be better off just watching movies by Kirk Cameron.

Wall*E lives on a post-Singularity Earth where 99% of humanity has migrated from their physical bodies into a vast cloud of computronium around the Sun, leaving a ragtag bunch of Luddites behind. He and his companion life On High, using their high tech to repair scavenging drones. Then the Luddites capture him...

Yeah, no thanks.

There. Much better.

Not at all, and why the personal attack? What are you, Cruises agent or something? I've never liked Cruise, and most of his movies are derivative crap. He's the same wooden wannabe action hero in all his movies. And he's a nut. Doesn't improve my desire to run out an watch one of his movies.

You said it has a weak story, which you can't back up with anything. What you meant to say was "I have a weak argument and you should ignore me."

//indeed, I wish I had
//also, Minority Report and the last two Mission Impossible movies didn't suck, not to mention Valkyrie and... you get the idea

You're arguing over nothing with a complete stranger, you realize that right? And I wished you'd ignored me as well. I wasn't talking to you. I was making a comment about Cruise and his movies. I don't like his movies. You obviously do. Personally, I don't care, it's whatever blows your hair back right. I am allowed not to like his movies.

Ok, I'm finished. No point in going on about nothing.

I am arguing that you have made a baseless claim about there being a weak story, and I countered that you must be the screenwriter (or maybe producer / director) to know it's a weak story since this is so far from release that no one save a few executives have seen extensive footage.

Maybe you should shut the hell up before you start dropping dog shiat in a thread about a movie whose only critique you can make is by poorly contrasting it to previous Tom Cruise movies, many of which have been critically acclaimed.

//will argue with complete strangers since a) that is what the f*ck Fark is for and b) dumbasses who use the "but but but... I am a complete stranger!" argument are just walking back their own derp in a not-too-subtle way

Why is the Mass Effect movie called by the title of an Elder Scrolls game?

coeyagi: coeyagi: Mugato: Well it's not a sequel, prequel, re-imagining, re-boot or comic book movie. Sadly, that's enough to earn my money nowadays.

April release though, they're not too confident with it.

Watchmen was released in March. Late March / early April is the new May, mainly for big budget non-sequel, non-reboot fare. Now, if it was February, I'd agree with you.

Also, Hunger Games was March I believe. That did ok in the box office too.

Both movies (HG to a much larger extent) had built in audiences though. On the other hand, The Matrix came out in late March/early April (with a relatively modest $28 mil weekend box office) and we all know how that one did. It's kind of the place to put movies if you're not sure they're going to set the box office on fire the first weekend but will go on to build an audience before being squashed in May.

You know, I wouldn't put it beyond Scientologists to troll internet forums in support of Tom Cruise.

Shadowknight: I want to hate Cruise, because he's nuttier than squirrel poop, but he's a pretty good actor and makes a pretty damn entertaining action film. The fact he apparently has an anti aging gene (or a portrait of an old man in his attic) makes him still viable for the role, so hey.

I'll watch it.

I want to be as awesome as Tom Cruise.

I just don't know if I want to be as crazy as him, too.

I wouldn't put it beyond the average Farker to not be able to follow a thread in the slightest. The guy comes in here and starts a bunch of noise about how there is a weak story in this movie. His only evidence was that Tom Cruise is in it. I was responding to his derp, not by defending Tom Cruise, but by saying how retarded a claim it is to say that a movie has a weak story based on one person's involvement in it, a person who has a decent track record in making movies for critical acclaim, and I provided a few examples just from the past decade. Do I think his record is stellar? Hell no, he has some duds like Knight and Day and Far and Away and a few others.

So, again, I wouldn't put it past you to not realize that the initiator of this discussion wasn't me and that the initiator of this conversation is in fact the trolling douchebag.

See, that's a BS cop out. Fark is largely about having fun going back and forth. "They're just movies"? Yeah, I suspect the guy you're responding too isn't staying up at night worrying about this film. If they want to have at it with another Farker wtf do you care?
