ranak: "From the producers of..."

Yeah, no thanks.

"From the producers of..." a critically and commercially successful movie. THE HORROR!

"From the director of..." should scare you much more.

Would you guys and gals come to a consensus as to whether or not I should like this trailer?

Shadowknight: I want to hate Cruise, because he's nuttier than squirrel poop

This is pure poetry. Consider it stolen.

/Movie looks good.
//All trailers make the movie look good.
///I'll go see it when it hits the 2 dollar movie house.

Good: From the Producers of...
Good: Some pasty white British chick
Good: Olga "I probably make the entire hotel stink of sweaty Ukranian sex when I'm there" Kurlyenko [sic]
Bad: Morgan Freeman, not because he sucks as an actor, but because the guy will be in anything, some of it good, some it bad, so this movie is a total crap shoot
Bad: Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, Esq.
Bad: From the Director of....
Bad: It is unlikely that this plot is that creative. Battlefield Earth meets Prometheus meets Wall-E meets Howard the Duck

Verdict: 7.4 Armond Whites out of 10 Armond Whites

Singleballtheory: Not ONE person took an arrow to the knee in that trailer.

Perhaps it'll be in the sequel...

Thank You.

Tom Cruise as Wall-E

He's the right height for that. That's just smart casting.

2012-12-09 10:41:12 AM
:( Looks good, why'd it have to be Cruise...

2012-12-09 10:41:43 AM

coeyagi: Mugato: Well it's not a sequel, prequel, re-imagining, re-boot or comic book movie. Sadly, that's enough to earn my money nowadays.

April release though, they're not too confident with it.

Watchmen was released in March. Late March / early April is the new May, mainly for big budget non-sequel, non-reboot fare. Now, if it was February, I'd agree with you.

Well the thing is they moved it from July. Although it's true that there are way too many movies to open everything in the summer and Hunger Games did well in April in part because it had little competition (except the blockbuster hit John Carter).

Soooooo...when your career is in the toilet you take any script that comes along. No matter how weak the story? Ok then.

This movie has serious problems already, regardless of release date:

1) Not a reboot, sequel or remake - kinda important (sadly) for non-comedic, non-drama, non-horror movies these days.
2) No well-known source material for which it was based upon.
3) So far, no high-concept to base a marketing campaign on. It probably has some interesting plot twists, but no cool Matrix-esque universe to hint at in marketing

It may be a good movie, even a great movie (highly unlikely), but if I were doing the marketing on this, I'd start writing my resume because I doubt that anything they do is going to drive box office on this, unless they get some great reviews and great word of mouth.

Though, it could be the next District 9, but again, the high-concept came through in the marketing.

Oh, disappointed that you couldn't get Bradley Cooper for your script (I mean, you must be the screenwriter if you know how weak the story was that you wrote. Why do you hate you?)

Looks neat, and I liked Tron: Legacy, so the choice of director doesn't scare me. Might just have to give this a shot.

2012-12-09 10:52:41 AM
The trailer ran at least a minute too long with the killing of survivors thing. Could have ended with Morgan Freeman flicking out the match, and I would still be wondering and excited for the movie. Now... I dunno if I care as much about the film when I know Cruise will be disobeying orders, the aliens are likely not some great invaders, and the government or organization betrayed mankind and is covering it up.

I might have given it a shot... until I saw the Yanks cap. Fark that shiat, why couldn't he be wearing something cool, like a tibetan hat?

My guess at a plot twist:
the aliens actually won, the whole shiny future is a front by the aliens using human dupes to help wipe the remaining humans out.

styckx: I also can't take Tom Cruise seriously in that stupid suite and the Tyco gun.

I'd rather see an unknown than Tom cruise. I'm not on boycott against him yet, but it's getting there. Has the church done anything sick, twisted, or crazy lately?

2012-12-09 11:32:48 AM
While tom cruise is crazy as all get out he is still a damn fine actor. He doesn't really make many bad movies and I seem to like the majority of the movies he has been in. I may give it a shot.

2012-12-09 11:34:40 AM
Wow. That looks like an interesting movie. Especially with all the major plot twists. Which they showed in the trailer. Dammit.

Watch it again with closed captioning on. Someone was having fun.
"needs revealing sentence without a condom". What?

There's just no chance I'm going to contribute my earned income to that crazy piece of shiat Cruise and his "religion" regardless of what he's in or does.

And this movie will not be a hit.

Apparently looking at the trailer it seems that Earth has become the new Australia where prisoners are being dropped off to be killed by drones/aliens.

B.L.Z. Bub: Apos: Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko and Thomas Mapother ,Jr ?

Eh, I'll give it a shot.

/Titty Detritus sprinkles.

That's Thomas Cruise Mapother IV to you!

/It'd be funny if he legally added "Esquire" to the end. It's always funny when you hear a long name with "Esquire" tacked on
//Still not sure what an "esquire" is, though. I know it has something to do with practicing law in the U.S., but in the U.K. it means something different. I tried to grok the Wikipedia article and got a headache

It was my understanding that if you're the first of a given name, you use Esquire. You're not a Senior until there's a Junior.

Doesn't look all that interesting.

Yes, Tom Cruise is a nutcase. But I don't pay to watch his personal life. I pay to see MI:4, Tropic Thunder, Jack Reacher, etc...I pay to have him entertain me in most of his movies. The rest of you can sit here and complain about Xenu, with your 3 boxes of Marlboro's and a half empty Mountain Dew wondering why there's never anything good to watch.

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes

This copy is pretty ridiculous. I know you have to hype the film, but declaring your own product a "groundbreaking cinematic event" is the definition of hyperbole. And don't say, "from the director of..." if the director has only made "meh" level movies.

Shadowknight: The fact he apparently has an anti aging gene (or a portrait of an old man in his attic)

Actually I was going to mention that the video before hitting play he looks like he's finally starting to age.

Not at all, and why the personal attack? What are you, Cruises agent or something? I've never liked Cruise, and most of his movies are derivative crap. He's the same wooden wannabe action hero in all his movies. And he's a nut. Doesn't improve my desire to run out an watch one of his movies.

You're arguing over nothing with a complete stranger, you realize that right? And I wished you'd ignored me as well. I wasn't talking to you. I was making a comment about Cruise and his movies. I don't like his movies. You obviously do. Personally, I don't care, it's whatever blows your hair back right. I am allowed not to like his movies.

Ok, I'm finished. No point in going on about nothing.

Those are the autocaps which are often hilarious (and Google acknowledges this).

VRaptor117: Wow, that trailer ruined the entire movie. Now it's obvious that Tom Cruise is somehow working with the aliens or may be the "1%" humans who got to escape. Why did I watch that.

I think trailer folks that do that should be shot. I remember the trailer for Terminator 2 showing that Arnie was the good guy when the movie is clearly shot so that you won't know that until the hallway sequence in the mall where John has to choose between the cop and Arnie. In this trailer we know Wall-E is part of a team looking to clean up the last aliens and find survivors, he finds a seitch containing a group of Fremen lead by Morgan Freeman. Wall-E longs for his girlfriend who he then finds in stasis and wakes her up at which point his own drone support turns on him and tries to kill him, his woman, and the Fremen. He's clearly double-crossed by his search team, and the only thing left to find out is whether he's double crossed because the red head loved him and was jealous of him finding her, or he was inadvertantly working for the aliens the whole time. Maybe there's a big twist and he was dreaming the whole time, or he's an android.

Have you watched any movies from the "Golden Era" of cinema? Those people make the people today look like the Amish. And that's just what was reported, before everyone had their own video camera. Your sensibilities would be better off just watching movies by Kirk Cameron.

why pay for a twist the trailer gives away for free?

/ok with Cruise
//most 'classic' actors were wife beaters/bible-thumpers/alcoholic/gangsters, etc. anyway

2012-12-09 06:11:29 PM
Well, I feel like I've already seen the movie.

2012-12-09 06:22:18 PM
I first watched the trailer without any sound or captions. The story I came up with in my head was much better.

Wall*E lives on a post-Singularity Earth where 99% of humanity has migrated from their physical bodies into a vast cloud of computronium around the Sun, leaving a ragtag bunch of Luddites behind. He and his companion life On High, using their high tech to repair scavenging drones. Then the Luddites capture him...

I am arguing that you have made a baseless claim about there being a weak story, and I countered that you must be the screenwriter (or maybe producer / director) to know it's a weak story since this is so far from release that no one save a few executives have seen extensive footage.

Maybe you should shut the hell up before you start dropping dog shiat in a thread about a movie whose only critique you can make is by poorly contrasting it to previous Tom Cruise movies, many of which have been critically acclaimed.

//will argue with complete strangers since a) that is what the f*ck Fark is for and b) dumbasses who use the "but but but... I am a complete stranger!" argument are just walking back their own derp in a not-too-subtle way

Also, Hunger Games was March I believe. That did ok in the box office too.

Both movies (HG to a much larger extent) had built in audiences though. On the other hand, The Matrix came out in late March/early April (with a relatively modest $28 mil weekend box office) and we all know how that one did. It's kind of the place to put movies if you're not sure they're going to set the box office on fire the first weekend but will go on to build an audience before being squashed in May.
