I wish I could say I was surprised to see that Bonnie Hammer is one of the architects for this disaster. Did a nerd or a geek kill her dog once in a freak science experiment accident? Is that why she's so determined to wipe any genre programming off of the airwaves?

The only things worth while on G4 is X-Play and Reviews on the Run. Both of which are Canadian so I'm not sure if you Americans get those shows. Oh also the Lab with Leo LaPorte because it reminds me of Dave Chalk's computer show... :)

But people get their gaming news and reviews online now. No way a gaming channel can survive in this day and age.

Before then, it was the Modern Marvels Channel. But at least that was partially justifiable.

Niche channels are dead. 500 channels are they all have exactly the same programming: "Reality" shows a half step above Jerry Springer.

Before the merger, there was also ZDTV/TechTV, which had some great shows like The Screen Savers. Those hosts got purged after Comcast bought TechTV and merged it with G4. The better hosts like Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton went on to do some great tech podcasts at TWiT and Revision 3, so they did eventually find a successful niche for themselves.

3 months until they're filled with "original programming" reality shows like every other network in existence.

Stay tuned for "Cover Guy", a show where we follow a group of aspiring male models trying to win a modeling contract with Esquire. Our celebrity panel (who no one even knows who they are) will judge them on subjective talents like: standing up, staring at the camera, pouting, taking off their shirts, pouting, knowing the proper amount of hair gel needed to hold up their faux hawk, and pouting. It'll surely be a show to remember...until we run it into the ground for 10 seasons with winners who go on to do nothing in the industry and fill the rest of our programming with pretty much the same show with slightly different premises.

After that: "Date Rape"
Then: "The Spray Tan Chronicles"

Bonnie Hammer is, truly, history's greatest monster. She destroyed the Sci-Fi Channel, and now she's setting her hooks into G4, too.

Soon, thanks to her, Bravo, and others, cable television will suffer heat death, as every channel in a given genre is indistinguishable from every other channel in that genre. Just in time to destroy cable television as a whole, as we move towards "pay per play" on demand programming with tiered access based on the amount of advertising you're willing to choke down.

2012-12-08 02:39:55 PM
I missed Call for Help, and Screen Savers. I will never forgive G4 for taking those away from me. I know Call for Help was going on in Canada, but I kind of stop watching the channel when they supposedly started to air it in America.

2012-12-08 02:42:38 PM
How many "geeks" (at least those who would happily self-identify as such) watched G4 even when it arguably didn't suck? While I do play video games and do other geeky things, I'm not terribly nerdy about techy stuff in general, and even I thought what I saw on stuff like "Attack of the Show" to be rather low-brow in terms of "geekness".

Shows like that would have their humorous moments, but all in all I don't think its content would go over the head of anyone under 30, regardless of their hobbies and interests. Perhaps it's just because of the internet age, something that 10-15 years ago would be considered a "geek" hobby is just pervasive now across a more base demographic.

The combination of G4 and Tech TV took a network for people with some level of intelligence (TechTV/ZDTV) and bastardized it with the farked up lowlife channel designed for people who were flipping the channel while Spike had commercials on (G4). Stay awhile and listen...

10-15 years ago, it wasn't G4. It was TechTV, and it was actually almost entirely geek stuff. Shows about computers and technology and new things and computer animation when it was still a new medium. In high school I had it on almost all the time.

There hasn't been any television for us like that in a long time. Thankfully, you can find enough solid online video series by dedicated people that there's worthwhile entertainment, just not on cable.

G4 hasn't been a tech channel for about a decade. It's been a channel that occasionally talks about technology in between Maximish crap. It was Spike with a video game show.

That happened when Comcrap acquired TechTV and merged it into G4. After The Screen Savers morphed into Attack of the Shiat, I stopped watching, except in later years when NBC brought in the occasional James Bond movie. Geeks are not necessarily gamers. I'm a geek, and I don't own an Xbox.

Would I watch Esquire TV? Maybe. Sounds a bit upmarket for me, but if they feature celebrity profiles as illustrated in TFA (Mila Kunis topless in tight leather pants), I might flip over from time to time.

I'm sure there is a way an innovative media company could run several niche channels with quality programming, keeping audiences engaged across several platforms beyond the cable channel. Costs would have to be kept low and other channels from the bigger companies would try and swoop in, but it could be done.

Sadly, the second they get bought by some hedge fund or bigger media company and be turned into the same flavorless mix of reruns and reality shows tangentially related to the original purpose.

Sorry, I should have clarified; I knew of TechTV, and how it was more "geeky" in terms of content and programming.

My rambling question/post was more of an attempt to pose "how may 'geeks' even hung around when it transformed into G4?" because my assumption is most would have left almost immediately. There's nothing inherently "geek" about "check out this new video game", which it seemed the stuff on G4 mostly talked about (the few times I even watched it).

At least Leo and the gang can still be seen on the likes of TWIT and other podcasts.

See what you've done all you stupid farkers whining about "Blah, blah TechTV, blah blah!" Now you have The Esquire Channel and is all your fault!

Killer Cars: Bloody William: 10-15 years ago, it wasn't G4. It was TechTV, and it was actually almost entirely geek stuff.

Actually quite a few stuck around for the first couple of months during the merger and once it was finalized. Many like me stuck thru it to see if G4 actually had any worthwhile content ("Icons" and "The Electric Playground" were better that most of their in-studio shows); and to see how much of a train wreck G4 was going to make of their "promise" to give equal weight in programming to the existing TechTV shows. I watched fairly regularly until the official last episode of The Screen Savers, and then caught up with X-Play now and again until I decided to cancel my TV service the next year.

I don't they do.

not a single frack was given by this nerd . the network has been dead to me since they started showing shoe segment on attack of the show.

Is this the channel that has that show about "crazy wild sex" that ends up being extremely boring and judgmental? That had a porn star hosting it who could put insomniacs to sleep?

No, I don't mean HBO's real sex, that's just lots of really gross people that you'd rather not associate with sex, although it is also boring.

Cinematech and Nocturnal Emissions were great shows to watch when you were stoned out of your f'ing gourd.

nickp91: X-Play was the only good thing about G4

And it was one of the few shows to make the cut from the Tech TV "merger".

I'll miss AOTS and XPlay. Well and I asume they will not cover E3 like G4 did and I'll not like that at all. The last years was friggin great.

Mentalpatient87: I wanted to like the shows on G4, but I couldn't get past the grating, horrible personalities they had hosting those shows. It is insane how annoying Adam Sessler and the Attack of the Show nerds were..

I liked Sessler. X-Play itself was always enjoyable. G4 had good online content too. Sadly, AOTS was always hit and miss and the 4 hour Cheaters marathons didn't do anything to keep me watching.

I can't think of another channel that had so much going for it and was so mismanaged.

I liked AotS... But whatever.

...and Code Monkeys. Adult Swim should have picked it up instead wasting their money on the horribly unfunny Tim & Eric.

Holy shiat, someone besides me is a fan of code monkeys?!

Hah, I didn't notice that before. Yes it does.

He's probably trying to play that stupid Shadow Cruiser that has a cloak and no shields.

The description for Esquire TV makes it sound like nothing but a slightly less gay version of Bravo.

I gotta say. Watching attack of the show these past few weeks where the cast is in "fark it" mode has been hilarious. That black friday segment where Matt Mira draws cock and balls the entire time had me crying.

2012-12-09 03:07:25 AM
Sounds like a mistake for me.

At this point in time the idea of going for the "metrosexual" dollar is well past. They missed that train...it's arrived at the destination, de-boarded, been cleaned from top to bottom and moved on.

G4TV was just sort of something you had to tolerate if you wanted to find out something. I would check it out less for the personalities and more for the coverage that no one else was really doing. You didn't really get to like it....you just kind of accepted it because no one else was doing it.

I might have been a fan of Attack Of The Show had I not wanted to see the host hung up by his thumbs. The premise was something I could have been into but that guy just annoyed the crap out of me.

Sessler and Webb were entertaining but it always seemed like the really cool bits were fer and far between. The writing was geared toward longer blocks of time and when they finally got it all up to speed it ended up being some of the longest blocks of commercials I can remember.

Wow. Now, if we can just get Candace Bailey to do that before AOTS disappears, we'll have a full set. Pretty much every other chick that has hosted that show has whipped 'em out at some point. Bailey already took a stop closer by letting that guy from Doctor Who grab a feel on the show.

dumbobruni: Ed Willy: I'm sure there is a way an innovative media company could run several niche channels with quality programming, keeping audiences engaged across several platforms beyond the cable channel. Costs would have to be kept low and other channels from the bigger companies would try and swoop in, but it could be done.

Sadly, the second they get bought by some hedge fund or bigger media company and be turned into the same flavorless mix of reruns and reality shows tangentially related to the original purpose.

its becoming painful to watch Food Network eat itself. Restaurant Impossible is more about the interior renovations than food (thanks to guest HGTV designers), and the new "reality" shows are over-the-top staged nonsense.

Discovery Communications has started running nature programming on Velocity. I don't really understand.

Its also the constant blocks of the same shows that hurts. You check out Food Network in the afternoon and its just Restaurant Impossible, Iron Chef and Diners, Driveins and Dives over and over. Cooking Channel has a much better selection and variety....unless they get Good Eats happy.

eddievercetti: So a channel made for geeks, killed almost all geek programming, stop caring about their core audience, lost ratings, got brought by douches and now the channel will be made for douches.

Old ZD/Tech was actually useful, on one occasion. Woke up at home, for a change, ( `98-`00 count me `out of town' - DB migrations from `rusted iron'), some TTV report on `boom' - video of some bike messenger, at a payphone, calling his broker to buy a `thousand'? (some ungodly quantity) shares of Iomega. I broke out in a cold sweat. Only time I've ever gotten `lucky' (got a leg up on that debacle - though I ran screaming like a little girl a little too early to win big).

/defunct `world' on a lost channel

I remember browsing channels in 99 on Dish Network and spotting the ZDTV Zip File. Internet Tonight was amazing when Google/AltaVista/Yahoo/whatever hadn't begun crawling everything 3 times daily.

TSS was great but it did start to slide a bit before the G4 merger but not a hell of a lot. Used to catch La Porte's podcasts but I just can't manage to pay attention long enough to some of the rants to be bothered anymore.

I miss old History channel and their specials every holiday. God I want "In search of history" back on the air with some GD documentaries like the Russian one they did.

Who is this "Miss Ninja Warrior"? Can I have her address too?
