Killer Cars: How many "geeks" (at least those who would happily self-identify as such) watched G4 even when it arguably didn't suck? While I do play video games and do other geeky things, I'm not terribly nerdy about techy stuff in general, and even I thought what I saw on stuff like "Attack of the Show" to be rather low-brow in terms of "geekness".

Shows like that would have their humorous moments, but all in all I don't think its content would go over the head of anyone under 30, regardless of their hobbies and interests. Perhaps it's just because of the internet age, something that 10-15 years ago would be considered a "geek" hobby is just pervasive now across a more base demographic.

Stay awhile and listen...

10-15 years ago, it wasn't G4. It was TechTV, and it was actually almost entirely geek stuff. Shows about computers and technology and new things and computer animation when it was still a new medium. In high school I had it on almost all the time.

There hasn't been any television for us like that in a long time. Thankfully, you can find enough solid online video series by dedicated people that there's worthwhile entertainment, just not on cable.

G4 hasn't been a tech channel for about a decade. It's been a channel that occasionally talks about technology in between Maximish crap. It was Spike with a video game show.

eddievercetti: So a channel made for geeks, killed almost all geek programming, stop caring about their core audience, lost ratings, got brought by douches and now the channel will be made for douches.

That happened when Comcrap acquired TechTV and merged it into G4. After The Screen Savers morphed into Attack of the Shiat, I stopped watching, except in later years when NBC brought in the occasional James Bond movie. Geeks are not necessarily gamers. I'm a geek, and I don't own an Xbox.

Would I watch Esquire TV? Maybe. Sounds a bit upmarket for me, but if they feature celebrity profiles as illustrated in TFA (Mila Kunis topless in tight leather pants), I might flip over from time to time.

Klippoklondike: They should bring back Kate Botello

I remember when it was still ZDTV, and their mascot was Tilda. Kate Botello did the voice, which made her even more awesome. Apparently, all images of Tilda have been wiped from the web, as I can't find any.

Anyway, I liked Kate. She was cute, funny, and smart.

Jedekai: 2005 G4 was badass.

The X-Play review for a terrible Euro game called "Singles: Flirt Up Your Life" (by Morgan Webb - who is awesome) still makes me laugh.

Zero Punctuation is the new X-Play, but they don't have Drunk Link ("The girl you'll always want is just out of reach until you get a hookshot... rrr... something.") or Unemployed Ninja.

They lost Guy In A Bear Suit when they moved to LA.

I'm sure there is a way an innovative media company could run several niche channels with quality programming, keeping audiences engaged across several platforms beyond the cable channel. Costs would have to be kept low and other channels from the bigger companies would try and swoop in, but it could be done.

Sadly, the second they get bought by some hedge fund or bigger media company and be turned into the same flavorless mix of reruns and reality shows tangentially related to the original purpose.

DerpHerder: Mentalpatient87: I wanted to like the shows on G4, but I couldn't get past the grating, horrible personalities they had hosting those shows. It is insane how annoying Adam Sessler and the Attack of the Show nerds were..

You don't like Adam Sessler? I always enjoyed him all the way back when X-Play was known as extended play. He made some great skits and was a harsh critics of the games he reviewed. To each his own I guess.

The combination of G4 and Tech TV took a network for people with some level of intelligence (TechTV/ZDTV) and bastardized it with the farked up lowlife channel designed for people who were flipping the channel while Spike had commercials on (G4). Anyone whoever told me they liked G4 was someone who had no real interest in technology. Attack of the Show just became a way for the idiot male hosts to sexually harass the female hosts. AKA douche bag central.

Adam also acted like that weird buddy who always knew what were the best games to buy. Sure he was goofy but He has never led me wrong on his reviews.

Yeppers.

I wanted to watch AOTS and the other games shows, because I need my fix since I had to get rid of my Xbox to study for the bar; but could not tolerate the hosts. It was like listening to fingernails on chalkboards while chewing broken glass.

The only time I ever watched G4 was during E3, and even then they almost lost me when they would go to commercial six times DURING THE BIG THREE PRESS CONFERENCES.

But yeah, I've moved on from the loss of TechTV/ZDTV, thanks to following Leo Laporte over to TWiT. Podcasts get me plenty to listen to while driving to work or cleaning the house.

2012-12-08 05:31:25 PM
TechTV was a geat assortment of niche programming, with The Screen Savers probably being my favorite show there; I watched it regularly until it was decided that what tech geeks and propellerheads really wanted to watch was drift racing. That was the beginning of the end.

its becoming painful to watch Food Network eat itself. Restaurant Impossible is more about the interior renovations than food (thanks to guest HGTV designers), and the new "reality" shows are over-the-top staged nonsense.

Discovery Communications has started running nature programming on Velocity. I don't really understand.

Allansfirebird: I wish I could say I was surprised to see that Bonnie Hammer is one of the architects for this disaster. Did a nerd or a geek kill her dog once in a freak science experiment accident? Is that why she's so determined to wipe any genre programming off of the airwaves?

Back in high school, even the geeks turned her down for dates. She never forgot the pain and humiliation of being turned down by guys whose only sexual experience consisted of watching scrambled porn on The Playboy Channel and spanking it to an old, ratty Penthouse issue they found in the woods

Sorry, I should have clarified; I knew of TechTV, and how it was more "geeky" in terms of content and programming.

My rambling question/post was more of an attempt to pose "how may 'geeks' even hung around when it transformed into G4?" because my assumption is most would have left almost immediately. There's nothing inherently "geek" about "check out this new video game", which it seemed the stuff on G4 mostly talked about (the few times I even watched it).

Actually quite a few stuck around for the first couple of months during the merger and once it was finalized. Many like me stuck thru it to see if G4 actually had any worthwhile content ("Icons" and "The Electric Playground" were better that most of their in-studio shows); and to see how much of a train wreck G4 was going to make of their "promise" to give equal weight in programming to the existing TechTV shows. I watched fairly regularly until the official last episode of The Screen Savers, and then caught up with X-Play now and again until I decided to cancel my TV service the next year.

Is this the channel that has that show about "crazy wild sex" that ends up being extremely boring and judgmental? That had a porn star hosting it who could put insomniacs to sleep?

No, I don't mean HBO's real sex, that's just lots of really gross people that you'd rather not associate with sex, although it is also boring.

I liked Sessler. X-Play itself was always enjoyable. G4 had good online content too. Sadly, AOTS was always hit and miss and the 4 hour Cheaters marathons didn't do anything to keep me watching.

I can't think of another channel that had so much going for it and was so mismanaged.

I gotta say. Watching attack of the show these past few weeks where the cast is in "fark it" mode has been hilarious. That black friday segment where Matt Mira draws cock and balls the entire time had me crying.

2012-12-09 03:07:25 AM
Sounds like a mistake for me.

At this point in time the idea of going for the "metrosexual" dollar is well past. They missed that train...it's arrived at the destination, de-boarded, been cleaned from top to bottom and moved on.

G4TV was just sort of something you had to tolerate if you wanted to find out something. I would check it out less for the personalities and more for the coverage that no one else was really doing. You didn't really get to like it....you just kind of accepted it because no one else was doing it.

I might have been a fan of Attack Of The Show had I not wanted to see the host hung up by his thumbs. The premise was something I could have been into but that guy just annoyed the crap out of me.

Sessler and Webb were entertaining but it always seemed like the really cool bits were fer and far between. The writing was geared toward longer blocks of time and when they finally got it all up to speed it ended up being some of the longest blocks of commercials I can remember.

Wow. Now, if we can just get Candace Bailey to do that before AOTS disappears, we'll have a full set. Pretty much every other chick that has hosted that show has whipped 'em out at some point. Bailey already took a stop closer by letting that guy from Doctor Who grab a feel on the show.

Its also the constant blocks of the same shows that hurts. You check out Food Network in the afternoon and its just Restaurant Impossible, Iron Chef and Diners, Driveins and Dives over and over. Cooking Channel has a much better selection and variety....unless they get Good Eats happy.
