Olympic Trolling Judge: Dear Princess Celestia,

Please tell your sister to get out of my freaking head. Seriously.

Your faithful subject,
Scootaloo

P.S. Seriously, what the heck? GET OUTTA MY HEAD.

Yeah, so Luna is now master of the Dreamscape?

Is she related to DC's Sandman? Is Mr. Waddle really Wesley Dodds?

My dear Scootaloo,

There's no reason to fear the night. After all, there are no real monsters. Well, except dragons. And manticores. And cockatrices. And cerberuses. And changelings. But other than those, there's no reason to fear the night.

Love,
Princess Luna

(I was half expecting "Powerhouse" to come on during Scootaloo's little adventure in driving-while-tired. That sequence was on a par with every Warner Bros. cartoon that ever featured a construction site.)

But I couldn't remember FiW over all the nightmares I had at the end. What with Scootaloo wanting to be Dashie's protege, part of learning everything is finding out what rainbows are really made out of.

Nah. I think they've made a point to show that in a few episodes. She's mostly a showoff/tough exterior, but she's got a good heart.

It was definitely a cute episode. It was pretty much the Scootaloo episode everyone's been begging for since Season 1. Hopefully now we'll see more Scoots/Dashy team-ups. They have a lot to work with there.

Meanwhile, just picked up a copy of the first issue of the comic. I'm very impressed with it, and even impressed with IDW itself; I used to work at a shop and remember when they were getting their feet wet with just a ton of random-ass horror comics and tie ins. They've really found their feet these last few years.

Just got off work and gave it a watch.

Honestly, pretty decent. I'm not thrilled to return to the CMC well so quickly, but there was enough out there this week in terms of characterization that it was okay. And even more so because we get more princess lore about Luna, which is rare as hen's teeth. This dreamwalk ability is cool, though one must question the possible total lack of privacy on behalf of the citizens of Equestria.

I mean, one of your monarchs can literally just walk into your dreams and see what you're up to.

Other than that, we got some amusing reaction images, which is always nice.

And that's another thing... That harness is too tight, it's going to chafe! Can't she loosen it? The wagon's getting heavy! Why does she have to pull it?

(I gotta give Sweetie credit for accepting that guilting Rarity into going camping was not going to be completely without consequences...)

GREAT episode, I just have a few questions though.,,

First, what happened to Apple Bloom being an incredible singer, to the point that it's amazing she hasn't realized her cutie mark is probably related to that?

Second, since when is Luna able to enter ponies dreams? If part of her duty is to do so, why was she so angry that she was possessed by whatever force let her become Nightmare Moon simply because ponies were sleeping at night?

Think you mean Sweetie Bell on the first one, and the simple answer is that there's no way to make a "on the wall" round song sound like anything other than a joke.

Secondly, that's new information. On top of that, it probably wouldn't be very satisfying to only interact with imaginary subjects, even if they exist in the real world. Certainly wouldn't preclude her from being jealous of her sister's greater overall relationship with the subjects, or that she pretty much had no one to play with, as it were. I'd be willing to bet that whatever caused Luna's madness in the first place will eventually be expounded upon in a future flashback.

There's been a lot of stuff this season that I'm guessing will get tied together in a finale. The origins of the Crystal Kingdom/Sombrero, that mysterious book at the end of the episode, the multiplication pool, and the Alicorn Amulet are probably all going to end up tying into whatever Celestia is preparing Twilight for.

2012-12-08 08:21:54 PM
It was a different voice actress doing the singing this time around, but it was also part of the joke that the song be annoying.

Wait, Apple Bloom or Sweetie Belle? Sweetie Belle's voice will come back; she's just a little horse.

dashie.mylittlefacewhen.com

I went back and looked that up. In Season 1, Episode 18, "The Show Stoppers" - the one with the talent show fiasco - they established Sweetie Belle as a singer, and Scootaloo as the one whose great moves on her scooter suggested she'd be a good choreographer, and (a few minutes later) Apple Bloom showed herself to be the one who knew how to use a dress form and to clean the paintbrushes between each color.

So Sweetie Belle made the costumes and did the art, Scootaloo wrote and performed the lyrics, and Apple Bloom did Kung-fu dancing. It's not Freddy Kreuger they have to worry about, it's Dunning-Kruger. Until they realize for themselves what they're actually good at, no cutie mark. The harder they try, the harder they fail.

There is no try; only do, or do not, and we still have a few episodes left in which for them to succeed. (Perhaps it's best for dramatic purposes if they never do. Only by being so adorably incompetent can they teach that lesson to the target audience; it's not an easy concept to grasp even in adulthood.)

Second, since when is Luna able to enter ponies dreams? If part of her duty is to do so, why was she so angry that she was possessed by whatever force let her become Nightmare Moon simply because ponies were sleeping at night?

If I weren't on my way to the Grand Galloping Hearth's Warming Office Party, I'd roll with that one too. My guess is that she's mellowed a bit. Her vocabulary still bears passing resemblance to Joseph Ducreux, but at least THE ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE has mellowed significantly. Or maybe Nightmare Moon didn't get the power of nightmares until after she turned to the dark side, and that was the only part of her job that she actually liked. Or she liked it so much she wanted to do it 24/7.

Strolpol:

Or it could be that. Yeah, I like your take on it better. There's still enough room in the season to tie up a lot of loose ends.

2012-12-08 08:42:51 PM
She may have just recently acquired the ability, maybe Celestia wanted to give her more to do. It's also possible that Scootaloo just dreamed the whole thing and Luna wasn't really there at all.

Yeah, meant Sweetie Bell, had a Derpy Muffin Moment I guess.

As for the song, I suppose you're right with that particular song, but I seriously think she could have gospeled up something like "Row Row Row Your Boat" and not sounded like all her singing ability had vanished into nothingness.

I still don't buy it about Luna, however, and figure I'll just have to chalk it up to mere retconning for the moment. I mean, we still don't have any more info on her Nightmare Moon phase than Lauren saying that a malevolent force had been responsible, so there's at least SOME room for explanation.

And I sure hope they tie things together instead of leaving all sorts of loose ends, like what using dark magic may be doing to Twi, the Book, and all that...heck, I'm annoyed they haven't done more with Sombra after really pushing the Crystal Kingdom angle.

And we better get Chrysalis back, maybe as a teamup.

Actually, it was the episode before, Staremaster, that first introduced Sweetie Belle's singing ability when she did the Motown version of "Hush Now, Quiet Now".
