Listen, I'm ok with grown-ass men watching cartoons. I watch that new TMNT cartoon on the Nick and I'm not too ashamed of it. What I don't get is why the hell is there so much fervor over this to the point where there are fark threads and image memes and junk all over the place? The show itself is fine but the level of fanaticism surrounding it is weird even by internet standards.

Not trying to rain on the parade but somebody please explain to me why this is acceptable.

Well, Friendship is Magic has quite a number of things going for it.

1) It's funny.
2) The character designs are a nice balance of cute AND cartoony. Pinkie Pie's hijinx alone are more Looney Tunes than "The Looney Tunes Show". How did THAT happen?!
3) It's funny.
4) The writing is clever and smart, and can communicate to both kids and adults without alienating one group for another. That's very difficult to actually do.
5) It's funny.
6) The voice actors totally OWN their respected roles. A number of them keep a good correspondence going between themselves and the fans via conventions and social media.
7) Did I mention it's funny?

I hope that helped. :-)

I can think of dozens of cartoons that fall into most of those criteria. Spongebob never got fark threads. Powerpuff Girls never spawned thousands of image macros.

Spongebob is actually probably the best example of a cartoon made for kids but that caught on big with adult fans and college kids and when that happened I remember it being a big deal but this Pony stuff seems to have gotten out of control.

I've seen a couple episodes of it and it does seem like a cute kids show but even shows like Adventure Time, which is another tremendously popular cartoon doesn't have the same level of obnoxious fanaticism on the internet than My Little Pony does. Where are the fark threads for Adventure Time?

Thanks to our creepy, annoying video editor at work, I've just found out there's such a thing as a "bronie".

This dude will have earnest, opinionated conversations about who he thinks the best voice actor in the series is.

2012-12-08 10:37:02 AM
Basically-without trying to speak for everyone who loves the show-there are a lot of things about this show that remind the people who love it of the shows and movies they used to watch when they were growing up. The producers, writers and animators are probably more 'in tune' with Hasbro's legacy than Hasbro themselves are. This show incorporates so many of the things that were great about Disney movies, Don Bluth films, Nick toons, Warner Brothers etc yet they really put a lot of effort into making it their own thing, and they try their best to stay in tune with their fans without sacrificing the integrity of the show. This IS a kids show, kinda, tho the shows creator-Lauren Faust-meant it to be a show the whole family could watch. Dads, moms, boys AND girls, EVERYone should be able to understand and enjoy the characters and the situations they get themselves into.

Because that's what it's REALLY all about. This show is a very character driven one. They really do their best to make the whole toy selling thing a minor part of it. It's there, it's just part of the scenery, there's no shoving toys down your throat. I liked that and I also respect the fact that Hasbro has been pretty lenient when it comes to protecting their ip. They let the fans have quite a bit of leeway as far as creating their own pony themed art and crafts and music.

It might sound cliche, but the biggest draw to this is the whole 'caring is sharing' part of it. I think a lot of folks who watch this love this so much because the characters in the show care about each other. The cast put their hearts into the show, you can tell they get along in real life, because it really comes through. I think a lot of people feel like I do, and I've talked with enough kids who love this show to feel confident enough to say that the biggest reason people love this show is because friendship IS magic. Whether it's because you had friends already and appreciated what they meant to you or because you made some because of the show, this wonderful thing called the internet has made it so much easier for some of us socially akward types to make friends, we can't help but celebrate it, you know?

ANyways, this went on a lot longer than I meant it to, and i'd like to get back to watching Bodacious Space Pirates-another great series that focuses on character and friendship ^_^. Again, I don't represent everyone, this is just my thoughts on the matter. Maybe someone else has a different perspective. I guess on thing that makes me sad is all the sheer hate for it. I mean, I know some of us fans can be a bit obnoxious about it but for the most part, it's a harmless enough fandom.

See, here's the thing. Has he always been obnoxious? If so, it's not really the shows fault, and define 'creepy'? Is it that all of a sudden he's started to bother you, or have you perhaps not liked him all along and this is just another reason to dislike him?

If you'd rather not hear it, just politely ask him not to directly mention it to you. If he's just having conversations with people and you don't like the subject matter, I don't know what to tell you.

It changed my opinion of Scootaloo a bit. I get tired of the CMC about midway through the season, but I actually really like this episode. And yes, many many feels. More feels than I had watching Olivia cry at Peter for like twenty minutes during Fringe last night.

Also any bonus Luna is good Luna.

Nah. I think they've made a point to show that in a few episodes. She's mostly a showoff/tough exterior, but she's got a good heart.

Heywood Jablowme.

Meanwhile, just picked up a copy of the first issue of the comic. I'm very impressed with it, and even impressed with IDW itself; I used to work at a shop and remember when they were getting their feet wet with just a ton of random-ass horror comics and tie ins. They've really found their feet these last few years.

Just got off work and gave it a watch.

Honestly, pretty decent. I'm not thrilled to return to the CMC well so quickly, but there was enough out there this week in terms of characterization that it was okay. And even more so because we get more princess lore about Luna, which is rare as hen's teeth. This dreamwalk ability is cool, though one must question the possible total lack of privacy on behalf of the citizens of Equestria.

I mean, one of your monarchs can literally just walk into your dreams and see what you're up to.

Other than that, we got some amusing reaction images, which is always nice.

Your faithful student,
Twilight Farkle.

Looks like Rarity has been taking sitting lessons from Lyra.

Went and watched the first couple of MLP episodes today.
Can't say that the intravenous (and highly concentated) sugar-injection this show provides was unwelcome; I'll no doubt be watching at least a couple more. So thanks to all the pony-posting Farkers for introducing me to this show.

Forty-Two: Twilight Farkle: Today we learned about the Element of Generosity.

Just look at the meaningful task she generously gave Sweetie Belle!

And that's another thing... That harness is too tight, it's going to chafe! Can't she loosen it? The wagon's getting heavy! Why does she have to pull it?

(I gotta give Sweetie credit for accepting that guilting Rarity into going camping was not going to be completely without consequences...)

The first two episodes are usually regarded as the worst. It gets much better.

GREAT episode, I just have a few questions though.,,

First, what happened to Apple Bloom being an incredible singer, to the point that it's amazing she hasn't realized her cutie mark is probably related to that?

Second, since when is Luna able to enter ponies dreams? If part of her duty is to do so, why was she so angry that she was possessed by whatever force let her become Nightmare Moon simply because ponies were sleeping at night?

Think you mean Sweetie Bell on the first one, and the simple answer is that there's no way to make a "on the wall" round song sound like anything other than a joke.

Secondly, that's new information. On top of that, it probably wouldn't be very satisfying to only interact with imaginary subjects, even if they exist in the real world. Certainly wouldn't preclude her from being jealous of her sister's greater overall relationship with the subjects, or that she pretty much had no one to play with, as it were. I'd be willing to bet that whatever caused Luna's madness in the first place will eventually be expounded upon in a future flashback.

There's been a lot of stuff this season that I'm guessing will get tied together in a finale. The origins of the Crystal Kingdom/Sombrero, that mysterious book at the end of the episode, the multiplication pool, and the Alicorn Amulet are probably all going to end up tying into whatever Celestia is preparing Twilight for.

It was a different voice actress doing the singing this time around, but it was also part of the joke that the song be annoying.

they're defintively amongst the worst episodes...

highly recommended first season episodes are
- dragonshy
- bridle gossip
- sonic rainboom
- staremaster
- cutie mark chronicles
- party of one

Wait, Apple Bloom or Sweetie Belle? Sweetie Belle's voice will come back; she's just a little horse.

dashie.mylittlefacewhen.com

I went back and looked that up. In Season 1, Episode 18, "The Show Stoppers" - the one with the talent show fiasco - they established Sweetie Belle as a singer, and Scootaloo as the one whose great moves on her scooter suggested she'd be a good choreographer, and (a few minutes later) Apple Bloom showed herself to be the one who knew how to use a dress form and to clean the paintbrushes between each color.

So Sweetie Belle made the costumes and did the art, Scootaloo wrote and performed the lyrics, and Apple Bloom did Kung-fu dancing. It's not Freddy Kreuger they have to worry about, it's Dunning-Kruger. Until they realize for themselves what they're actually good at, no cutie mark. The harder they try, the harder they fail.

There is no try; only do, or do not, and we still have a few episodes left in which for them to succeed. (Perhaps it's best for dramatic purposes if they never do. Only by being so adorably incompetent can they teach that lesson to the target audience; it's not an easy concept to grasp even in adulthood.)

Second, since when is Luna able to enter ponies dreams? If part of her duty is to do so, why was she so angry that she was possessed by whatever force let her become Nightmare Moon simply because ponies were sleeping at night?

If I weren't on my way to the Grand Galloping Hearth's Warming Office Party, I'd roll with that one too. My guess is that she's mellowed a bit. Her vocabulary still bears passing resemblance to Joseph Ducreux, but at least THE ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE has mellowed significantly. Or maybe Nightmare Moon didn't get the power of nightmares until after she turned to the dark side, and that was the only part of her job that she actually liked. Or she liked it so much she wanted to do it 24/7.

Strolpol:

Or it could be that. Yeah, I like your take on it better. There's still enough room in the season to tie up a lot of loose ends.

2012-12-08 08:42:51 PM
She may have just recently acquired the ability, maybe Celestia wanted to give her more to do. It's also possible that Scootaloo just dreamed the whole thing and Luna wasn't really there at all.

Can one pick up the comic online? Can't find a store that carries it where I live?

Yeah, meant Sweetie Bell, had a Derpy Muffin Moment I guess.

As for the song, I suppose you're right with that particular song, but I seriously think she could have gospeled up something like "Row Row Row Your Boat" and not sounded like all her singing ability had vanished into nothingness.

I still don't buy it about Luna, however, and figure I'll just have to chalk it up to mere retconning for the moment. I mean, we still don't have any more info on her Nightmare Moon phase than Lauren saying that a malevolent force had been responsible, so there's at least SOME room for explanation.

And I sure hope they tie things together instead of leaving all sorts of loose ends, like what using dark magic may be doing to Twi, the Book, and all that...heck, I'm annoyed they haven't done more with Sombra after really pushing the Crystal Kingdom angle.

And we better get Chrysalis back, maybe as a teamup.

Actually, it was the episode before, Staremaster, that first introduced Sweetie Belle's singing ability when she did the Motown version of "Hush Now, Quiet Now".

I don't get the HUB or any cable so I have to wait for it to be on hubworld but I have to say that the past two weeks have had some awesome shout outs. I LOVED the CMC A-Team building montage and come on Babs Seed?? and last weeks shout out to Harry Potter was equally awesome.

That said.... do not look for a MLP wallpaper on Zedge

Hell yeah. They make the fillies lovely and the stallions hunky. MegaSweet needs to lay off the dickgirls, though, nothing ruins a picture faster than seeing the chick has a dick.

Having finally watched the ep:

1) The Luna stuff has got to be all dream sequence.

2) Scootaloo makes a kickstart motion when getting on her scooter, and her wings sound like a 2-stroke! D'aww! :-D

Mental retardation.

One could say the same about any obsession, even the obsession of hating others obsessions. It's all retarded.
