Well, maybe a patriotic veteran or two from St Louis as well.

EW.com recently released a list of Fall TV Winners & Losers, and pointed out that "Red State reality shows" have been performing stronger than ever this fall.

I gotta tell you...I just don't get it. I don't get reality shows in the first place, let alone the ones featuring a bunch of rednecks hootin' and hollerin'.

/has thankfully never even heard of this show until just now
//hadn't tuned into A&E in many years...or Bravo, History, TLC, et al. Even when I still had cable
///OK, I did watch a few episodes of Pawn Stars, so sue me

Thus sealing forever the reason channels like A&E and TLC do this. Congratulations, America. You got what you wanted.

I have no idea what that means, but it sounds appalling.

I don't normally like "reality" shows, but this one is actually kind of funny. There's very little of that manufactured bullshiat drama. It's just stupid people with money doing stupid things.

I've only seen bits and pieces of it, not even a whole episode. It appears to be one of the less likely offenders in the reality show genre, and had a few funny moments. Still won't watch it though.

It's completely fabricated with BS conflicts and idiotic side stories. It's an audio/visual lobotomy.

That's ok. To each his own. My wife watches those Real Housewives shows (which I can't stand). Duck Dynasty is the opposite of that. If you ever do get curious enough to watch an episode, watch the one where they buy a winery.

It's just really smart people doing stupid things to entertain....

I've only watched the show a few times but I'm well aware of their duck calls because most of my family and friends are hunters. many ivy league MBAs could a lot from that family....They have thoroughly exploited a niche market like few others. Then to expand that by going the reality show route to reach hundreds of thousands of people who know or care nothing about their core product is quite impressive. I just wish they would be more upfront with their intelligence and business savvy because I think that would be a far more interesting storyline but stereotypes sell better.

you have got to be kidding. many of my redneck relatives, who obviously have atrocious taste in tv and movies, have been telling me to watch this show. i was finally cornered the other night with this xmas episode, and it was the most fabricated, scripted, retarded nonsense ever. the family seems likeable enough, but they suck at 'acting'. whoever writes for that show fails. they have rich rednecks and thats the best they come up with?

Yup. I can't stand 'reality' shows. Duck Dynasty is friggin hilarious (well, Uncle Si is friggin hilarious, with Jase a close second).

This is obviously scripted, but it's better scripted than most sitcoms.

The idea is that "redneck reality" gives "yankees" something to laugh at. And it gives southernes something to identify with. Also, rural America has fared better in the economy overall. And are now seen as a untapped revenue stream /audience by programers and advertisers. As is, rural folks don't readily indentify with the cast of the Jersey shore.

This sums it up for me. The show's as scripted as all the other 'reality' shows, but the people are hilarious, and it's a fun watch. Rednecks doing stupid stuff is believable enough to me, given I grew up in the deep south and know/am related to enough of them.

It's not like anyone takes the show purely serious, right? I mean, in one episode, the 'bought a vineyard' ffs, and made wine with walmart grapes and sugar. It's just stupid fun, like sitcoms.

Yeah, like when Si "won" a camper in a raffle, then immediately took a nap in it. Willie hooks it up to the truck and drags it out in the middle of nowhere without Si waking up, as evidenced by the footage from the camera inside the camper, which I assume all campers come with now, right? Obviously scripted. Still funny.

Most "reality" shows = people pretending to be pissed off and dramatic. Yawn.
Duck Dynasty = people pretending to be stupid and goofy. Good for a chuckle.

I love that show. I can't stand normal reality TV, but Duck Dynasty is hilarious. It's obviously scripted, but that doesn't matter. The guys on the show are naturally funny, and Si is awesome.

MaxSupernova: I just wish they would be more upfront with their intelligence and business savvy because I think that would be a far more interesting storyline but stereotypes sell better.

Careful...

In reality these guys are pretty churchy. It comes across a bit in the show but the producers really downplay it. (I personally don't mind, they aren't your stock jerk homophobic hate mongers... )

Si has a wife, and they have an older brother who isnt on the show and doesn't have a beard. And they are all pastors or elders or deacons at their local church. Apparently Jase is a bit more conservative in personality then portrayed on the show...

I find it a great show to flip to during commercials. Those guys are always doing/saying goofy shiat. Its scripted but EVERYTHING is scripted and edited to some alternate reality. They seem like genuinely kind and relatively intelligent people clowning around for a camera. I don't think they suck at acting, i think they are just a bit apathetic through the entire process...

I think you have to be either a film studio's accountant or quite comfortable with mediocrity to really enjoy reality shows.

//past that, really they're just far cheaper to film since you don't have to pay some overpriveleged actors twice what they're actually worth and put up with trying to find something edgy and original. Much easier to locate a family in the boonies to pay a small monthly stipend to completely ignore their privacy..

I find it hard to believe that most of what these people say isn't scripted (especially the crazy, old uncle). That being the case, these hillbillies are actually more competent actors than I would give them credit for that they can deliver this material and seem pretty natural doing it.

That said, the show has its charms. At the very least this show is vastly more "laugh with" than "laugh at" like other reality shows set in the south.
