From the article I just linked to:

It is also worth noting that in 2008, then-First Lady  Laura Bush   http://abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=123976&page=1#.UMLL9bbP6qQ" target="_blank">told ABC News, " I think there are 49 trees in the whole house, just decorated with snow and tinsel and bright lights."  It is doubtful Fox Nation found fault with that, even though it was a mere two months after the stock market crash in October 2008.

All for the president and Moochele to hang dildoes and pictures of Mao from. Not a single one if them is in the public parts of the building or nuffin.

How about "why does any President no matter what is going on need that many trees in the White House"? Forgive me for finding it rude in this administration - it's rude in ANY administration. Just like the vacations.

Because it's a goddamn public office building and it's a pretty big one at that.

A lot of them are in the public area of the White House, not the family quarters.  And it's become a tradition over the years for different groups to make ornaments, usually with a specific theme for each.  One group's ornaments would go on one tree while another group's ornaments would go on the tree designated for them, and so forth.

Yep - and it's STUPID. I am not a bleeding heart anything, but the celebration of wealth while decrying the pain of the taxpayer pisses me off. The first commitment to eat what an average family eats permanently at the Whitehouse would earn me a lifelong devotion to a presidency. It no longer has anything to do with what we show to the world - they all do it too.

So you're against the President actually employing people at a public office building, and contributing to the economy that way?

That seems...dumb.

Again, you realize it's not just Obama that's in the White House every day, right? There are hundreds of people in there day in and day out. I'm sure you wouldn't object to your office spending a few hundred dollars every year on decorations. Want to really complain about excessive spending? How about complaining about the military budget which is more than the next 20 nations combined?

The world isn't looking at a decorated glorified office building and saying "Damn that excess!"

They're looking at a military that is 20x more powerful than any other and saying "Damn that excess"

Well that's what I do, sorta. Not really trolling, but I look for something snarky to say whenever I can. 54 Christmas trees in the home of the family of the man elected to presided over the most powerful country the world has ever known. 54 trees, is that all? That isn't excess, a lot more goes on there than just 4 people playing hoops and watching South Park. And I bet the Obama's had very little say in the decoration of America's most important residence. I'm sorry but the entertaining of foreign dignitaries will be in an opulent atmosphere, not the uninsulated quonset hut out back.

I'm not really worried about the number of Christmas trees in the White House. It's targeted stimulus from the President's budget to help out the agricultural sector.

What I would like is a count on the number of limes within the White House.

You could update it for a lot less than a half million. It's a big kitchen and in the governors mansion so I could see $100K but the cost of a farking McMansion to update a single room?

The White House earns its keep by hosting many foreign dignitaries and acting as a national monument and popular tourist attraction, so there's a vested interest in keeping it looking good and festive.

Meanwhile, who the fark wants to go to the Wisconsin Governor's Mansion?
