Well, they're real skulls made of crystal, if that's what you mean by "fake." They're probably not Incan or Mayan, and they're certainly not made by space aliens. There's no record of them ever existing before the first one was "found" in the 1930's, so they're "fake" in that sense. Nobody ever discovered one in a pre-Colombian site that wasn't badly compromised or trashed. And nobody had really given them much thought since the 1980's when there was a big alien crystal skull craze, till the Indiana Jones movie.

Probably this is just a sad attempt to make them relevant again; if they ever were before.

Yes, they very much are real and many differnt, seperate societies all over the world developed the practice.
It's belived to be mostly a cosmetic practice. But it helped to identify tribal affiliatins, determain social status and tribale hierarchy, as the larger your noggin, the smarter you were precieved to be and closer to the spiritual world.

That, or they were trying to look like our extraterristrial overlords.

Much like Highlander I, I watch it with the commentary by Mike, Servo and Crow. Purchased from rifftrax.com, if you are new to Fark and are unaware that the MST3K guys are still riffing movies. They ran out of the classic Golden Turkey movies and now they're just riffing Hollywood.

This is stupid. The news is stupid.

One, the skull in the movie is an alien skull with a type of head boarding look that has nothing to do with Belize. There are tribes that practice it elsewhere, however.

Two, the original find by the archaelogist's daughter was a plant made by her father for her to find on her birthday. The skull was not a real native artifact, it was a fake made in Europe.

Three, all of the crystal skulls are fakes including the four in the British Museum collections. They were made in Germany in the 1800s by skilled craftsmen using polishing techniques unavailable to North American natives.

This is New Age urban legend piled higher and deeper.

Also, does this guy own the skull in question or the rights (if any) to representations of it? After all, if it was a true archaelogical find, it is the collective property of the human race, not the finder and his family or heirs and assigns. Who owns the pyramids? Who owns the Clovis culture arrow heads? Well, Native Americans may own those even if it is proven they were made by Europeans who entered America across the Ice Age ice flows, hunting the seal and the walrus herds that bore their young there.

But as a rule, you can't sue if you don't own the rights and are thus subjec to some damages yourself. Does this guy? How? Why? It's pure BS as far as I can see.

Rifftrax is great. Riffing on old 50s movies like they did in MST3K is like shooting fish in a barrel but when they go after movies like Twilight it's much more hilarious.

But Highlander by itself is pretty cool. Just forget anything after it.
