netizencain: Hooray for carcinogen and fungus inhalation!

"Through many detailed experiments, handily summarised in this recent article in the journal Nature Reviews Cancer, scientists have discovered that various cannabinoids (both natural and synthetic) have a wide range of effects in the lab, including:

* Triggering cell death, through a mechanism called apoptosis
* Stopping cells from dividing
* Preventing new blood vessels from growing into tumours
* Reducing the chances of cancer cells spreading through the body, by stopping cells from moving or invading neighbouring tissue
* Speeding up the cell's internal 'waste disposal machine' - a process known as autophagy - which can lead to cell death

sammyk: Sounds like a creative way to get a visit from the DEA. They barely tolerate medical marijuana. How hard do you think they will come down on any business that sets up shop to facilitate recreational use? Also, how do you supply a business like that and stay under the state possession limits? Have fun in prison.

Well, if it's a corporation, then obviously the corporation is simply fined, since you can't arrest a corporation. Hey, it worked for the bankers.

It's still illegal to grow and distribute marijuana until the state sets up licensing and taxation guidelines, so for the next year he'll need a BYOBud policy rather than including it in the cost.

that is just freaking awesome! And it gets you high!

Sadly it appears it's strictly the cannaboid molecules the brainiacs are studying. Not the smoking, ingesting, whathaveyou. Still promising, me thinks.

Fark Me To Tears: It's going to be fun to watch the pot-induced DUI cases stack up. I wonder how many people need to be killed on the roads by people under the influence of legally-smoled pot before this nonsense finally gets repealed. It's not going to work, folks. Just how stupid is the whole thing going to be allowed to get before you're willing to admit it?

There is no significant population waiting to rush out and try weed for the first time. There may be a few people here and there, but by and large everyone who wants to smoke pot already smokes pot. These laws were enacted so that existing potheads stop getting harassed for possessing trivial amounts. There is no huge population of potheads swerving around the roads and causing wrecks like drunk. Youre expecting way too much.

adenosine: I have to agree with the people calling him a criminal and an idiot. You cannot distribute marijuana without a license. The liquor control board isn't even close to being able to license yet. Plus, smoking in public is prohibited anyway.

The disregard for this new law is amazing. Can't people just wait a year and buy it legally? Are you really going to ruin 40 years effort to change these laws by completely ignoring the restrictions put into them that allowed them to pass? It's just asking for a backlash against it. Go to the liquor control board's website, sign up for alerts and you can see history in the making. There is no need to jump the gun.

I don't know Spokane well, but people have been openly selling weed in PDX for at least since I got here in 95. Like, openly displayed and smoked right on the waterfront, with a precinct nearby. Seattle police haven't prioritized weed either. IMO, we've been disregarding the old law for a hell of a long time. We disregarded the medical law too. They aren't putting the genie back in the bottle this time. IMO, smoking some weed in public is just a small, reasonable reaction to the passage of this law, particularly when Seattle PD declares they will only issue warnings for now.

If the State makes it fairly easy to set up a new weed business, the feds won't be able to stop it. It'll be like playing whack-a-mole.

In legal weed states, pot prices will plummet and quality will be that of medical standards. The only trafficking will be to children.

Not to mention he's just poking the dynamite monkey that is the FDA to come down on him for selling an unapproved substance who's only official legitimate use (According to the FDA, that is.) is as an appetite induction agent in Chemotherapy and HIV Wasting Syndrome.

THIS. Please don't claim pot smoking prevents cancer, or lung disease. It's been shown it doesn't. Vaporization or ingestion is much safer.

You do know there's a complete difference between In Vitro, and In vivo studies, right? Lots of compounds that show in vitro effects on cancer cell lines are completely useless in vivo.

Cancer woo is shameful. Don't promote it.

arentol: Is this guy aware that what he is doing is highly illegal in the state of Washington? Why would he admit to criminal actions to reporters like this?

You have to be licensed to sell marijuana in Washington, and nobody is licensed yet. So yeah... Kinda breaking the law there buddy, and while the police are looking the other way right now at people smoking in public, that doesn't mean they are ignoring people selling the stuff, especially ones doing so in such open and blatant disregard for the law.

I'm sure he's aware. FTA mentions going to various of his friends' houses. It's possible each of them has an ounce or less, and that the fee is for the cost of the tour, with the weed being "given away" gratis to tour members. Like if I were homebrewing again, I couldn't sell my beer, but I could charge $5 for an empty cup and give the beer away for free.

Uh, as someone who likes to get potted up, this is bullshiat, at least where I live. Cops are not looking to cite people with small amounts of cannabis (they are never arrested). Most cases involving small amounts have a larger crime, like DUI, attached to them, and the possession aspect is usually dismissed if the accused takes a plea.
As a Coloradan, I voted for 64, but I think little will change, i.e., can't smoke in public, in vehicles, etc., but what is new is the legality of growing multiple plants.

Well, except that his marijuana stances are one of several things actual liberals (as opposed to the centrists that compose most of the Democratic party) criticize him on fairly frequently. Y'know, kinda blowing the "Obamessiah" meme out of the water in the process?

That was my first thought: just as 90% of the membership of the old CPUSA was FBI dorks, most of his reservations will be snapped up by DEA drones. Your tax dollars in action.

I cannot see the narcocrats ever giving up. They're still in thrall to Harry Anslinger's ghost.
