Legaspi suggested removing the hatches completely so the bag's owner would quickly know it was found. Reed opted against it, fearing a gardener or one of his kids would fall into the vault. Crime-scene tape seemed excessive and a mean message could make matters worse.

Reed got a better idea.

I have an even better better idea, since you figured out it was Facebook that got you into this mess. Hint hint.

duffel bag hidden under a hot tub full of weed in jars ?

Sounds like someone cleaned out their headstash in a hurry. Most people wouldn't be transporting large amounts of MJ in glass jars. Too much of a hassle and weighs to much. Not to mention the noise jars would make clanging around.

I wonder if a dispensary in the area got robbed.

Marijuana and hashish, two substances derived from the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa), are also considered natural hallucinogens, although their potency (power) is very low when compared to others. Marijuana (also called grass, pot, tea, weed, or reefer), a green herb from the flower of the hemp plant, is considered a mild hallucinogen. Hashish is marijuana in a more potent, concentrated form. Both drugs are usually smoked. Their effects include a feeling of relaxation, faster heart rate, the sensation that time is passing more slowly, and a greater sense of hearing, taste, touch, and smell.

I will admit that about the third I smoked it I saw transparent, animated wallpaper patterns appear on my carpet for a few seconds. That happened once. When I was 15. When I hadn't smoked more than a few bowls in my life. Even so, it's ludicrous to categorize it alongside LSD, mescaline and peyote.

1. Yeah, they're coming back for it.
2. Look, look how incompetent and stupid the police response is. Police are no one's friend and calling cops in a non-violent, marijuana-related situation is going to be a guaranteed hassle.

Solution? Sit on the situation. Hide the weed somewhere else and put up cameras. Then, when the weed owner comes back, is identified and assessed as a threat, you then hopefully blackmail them, getting straight cash for your discovery, at bargain prices, really, for them, whoever was foolish enough to put their stash on your property. Then it's win, win, win, win all around. Unless you have to kill them. In that case, just move up to meth I guess, and keep going deeper and deeper..

It's a fairly common meme that drug dealers are rather more attached to their drugs than is practical. I'm sure it happens sometimes in real life, but in all honesty I figure most are willing to write off the occasional loss as merely bad luck, even if it's just the homeowner finding the weed and disposing of it, one way or another.

Given that it's his house and he's not immediately moving out, he's easier to find than random joe on the street.

Well, it is a little weird that an ex-LA Times reporter can afford to drop $175,000 into an internet startup, knows exactly how much weed is worth just by looking at it, apparently knows where to unload weed, can afford to have someone else install solar panels for him, and just happened to "find" a bunch of weed in his back yard.

Other than that, yeah. What a stupid article.

Yeah, while he may have been trying too hard to write a Hunter Thompson-style gonzo drug story, if I found that much weed in my back yard, I'd be nervous too. Anyone who left that much dope lying around would not be a happy person when they came back and found it gone, and they'd probably have both the guns and the muscle to ask the nearest person (me) where it had gone. I didn't read the story but the headline reminds me of a story my dad told me. He moved into a house with a huge back yard that had grown wild. Rather than tackle it himself, he hired a guy down the street to clear it out. Guy brought a tractor and tiller attachment and started clearing the yard. Every 10 feet, he'd stop, pull up a plant, set it aside, and clear another 10 feet. When he finished, he said, "No charge" and went home. Turns out the previous tenant had planted a bunch of marijuana then disappeared.

Has Desert Eagle ever made a .45? I know they have .357, .44, and the ever-so-famous .50, but I just don't remember ever seeing a .45...

Well, you have to take into consideration a guy that was worried about a neckless mook with steroidal shoulders. My guess is his knowledge of guns isn't the best.

Man, I can't get enough of that meme.

Well I think it was $10,000 worth by the time they called the press conference.

Sure, it's getting tired, but at least it's based in reality.

Private_Citizen: Since he was opening the vault area for a worker, I think he had to do the right thing and call it in. If he didn't, he ran the risk of having the worker do it.

Well, I don't know. He says he found a big bag. What did he do, start yelling, "OMG, IS THIS MARIJUANA? I'VE NEVER SEEN SO MUCH POT IN MY LIFE. THIS IS NOT MY POT, WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH IT?"

When Mack Reed opened up the underground access vault for a technician to inspect, he spotted an army-green bag that turned out to be stuffed with weed and hash.

He sounds like kind of dumbass, both with his hyperactive description of everything, and the fact that he didn't have the sense to just take the bag, look inside it, then keep his mouth shut. It could have been anything.  He wasn't required to tell the service guy what was up with the bag.

Why the hell would somebody stash drugs on a stranger's property?!

Considering the $$$ involved it seems like an extremely bone-headed move.

Wasilla Hillbilly: I have definitely experienced mild hallucinations from smoking marijuana. It hasn't happened in a long time though. Probably in my early 20s the last time i can recall.

I feel like we've had this conversation recently...

stop telling me I have a psychosis and/or it was laced.

Yeah same here - it basically seems to depend on the amount (and possibly exactly which active components are in the batch you are smoking). You can get a pretty decent trip from bongs of black hashish, although I haven't done that in a very long time.

I have had long arguments with some people on IRC because people just want to believe that because it doesn't happen to them, and it's usually not classed specifically as a hallucinogen, that these effects aren't real.

"While many psychoactive drugs clearly fall into the category of either stimulant, depressant, or hallucinogen, cannabis exhibits a mix of all properties, perhaps leaning the most towards hallucinogenic or psychedelic properties, though with other effects quite pronounced as well. "

This is where the meme breaks down. The quantity of the pot goes down as the chain of custody is extended but the value goes up as it hits the press.

It's all the same old shiat anyway. If more drugs are seized it means we're winning the drug war and we need to double down on spending because the DEA and other law enforcement are on a roll and they just need a little more to end it altogether.

If fewer drugs are seized then that means we're losing and we have to down down on our efforts because it means there are so many drugs which aren't being caught by law enforcement.

/and in other news, now that Colorado has legalized recreational marijuana the county next to mine (Weld) is taking steps to make sure that it cannot be sold there.
//my town just re-legalized medical marijuana dispensaries because all the potheads who voted in the presidential election couldn't be bothered to vote in 2011 when they were banned.

I vaguely remember when I'd have a small trip on cannabis. I personally don't like to hallucinate, so if I honestly tripped hard, I'd probably never smoked it again. I have baby-sat noobs who've had a full on psychological episode, including paranoia and possible full hallucinations. I don't think people who are potentially wired incorrectly should use marijuana outside of controlled situations. I fully support medical research for canabanoids on treating psychological ailments, but outright treating any type of psychosis with a completely natural substance that is prey to the chaos of nature is irresponsible. Some molds that can form on the buds can cause serious psychological side effects for people with chemical imbalances. I don't blame the marijuana, however the tiny degree of risk is there. I've witnessed people having adverse reactions while knowing the only thing they've had is the exact same pot I've had. I really don't like it when someone ruins a great buzz because they failed to tell me they were overly sensitive to bud. It pulls me out of my high and I have to handle their issues.

Like booze and any other intoxicant people should use it responsibly and gauge their actual reaction to the substance. I didn't react well to LSD or Mushrooms, never had a bad experience on weed. I won't touch any of these new fancy research chemicals, I like not being a cannibal.

Cannabis Sativa/Indica, I'll take mildly hallucinogenic as a property, but I've seen walls gain length and distort shape while drunk but I've never lost perception on weed. Most people who have hard hallucinations usually take way too much, mix a lot of alcohol, or have some already present issue.

Happy Hours: That man's a liar. I stashed $250,000 worth of weed in his back yard.

Point well taken. He could stash and resell a fifth of it and no one would be the wiser. It would be an impossible case for the DA to prove.

Max Awesome: Why the hell would somebody stash drugs on a stranger's property?!

Drugs stashed on YOUR property can be used as evidence against you. Stashing drugs elsewhere avoids that problem, and public areas tend to be either too inaccessible or see too much traffic with the odd person getting into nearly every spot on a daily basis. I mean, consider public park trash cans. Besides the nastiness, there's workers that change the bags in those on a regular basis.

The property of a family on vacation can be an ideal spot to stash it. They're not around to find it and you don't have random people wandering the property either. Heck, a family that's merely out during predictable periods can work as well.

Personally, I figure that there are good odds that the stasher got arrested for something else and that's why it was left there for long enough for the owner to find it. Drug cars are occasionally sold to innocent people for much the same reason. The owner gets busted, sensibly doesn't say a word about the drugs the police don't know about, the car is sold at auction(or whatever) while he's in prison. Blam, somebody's grandparents end up owning a car stuffed with a hundred pounds of drugs(found at the dealer when the gas tank doesn't fill as expected in the case I remember).

Unless he was caught trying to do the 'selling' part, or with it in his trunk while moving it.

They should classify robitussin as a hallucinogen.

Assassin, what was the bill about?

Cops always overestimate the value of weed. They call it at the highest street value probably by gram, even if its crap n should be listed at wholesale, as in this case. My dad worked in narcotics and would always laugh at how high a value of a seizure reports in the news would be.

Bummerduck, weed out here in cali is among the cheapest you can get, the dispensaries are competing with the street market, keeps it low. Quality stuff, too.
