One should not mock tsunami warnings. There is always a big one waiting in the wings.

abhorrent1: A three foot wave? Can you even surf on that?

I remember hearing that you can't surf tsunamis. I forget why, but you can't.

I live in Yokosuka, and I felt that quake. 7.3, but it was a couple hundred miles away. It scared the crap out of me! Longest and most intense quake I've felt, but then again, I arrived after the quake that took out the Fukushima plant.

It's because there's no wave crest like with wind generated waves. It's more like the tide coming in (tidal wave, after all) where the water level just keeps rising.

/I didn't fully grasp this until watching video of the big tsunami following the 9.0 last year.

Is it 1m high at sea, before it hits the shallows, or is it 1m high at the beach? How does this work?

Since this happened on Pearl Harbor Day shouldn't someone be blaming Obama for a coverup or something?

I'm relatively near you, and you're right, it was pretty long. I won't make fun of you being scared because I remember how scared I was after my first quake.

But the big Tohoku one was farking insane, even on the west side of the Kanto plain. farking insanity. I can't even begin to imagine what it was like in Tohoku. Here's the shindo map for that one...

Some people (like subby) are not very educated about the Tsunami. Even a 3' Tsunami can cause major damage dependent upon location.

/A Tsunami is not just a wave.
