whidbey: Jackson Herring: GreatGlavinsGhost: The idea is to make it specific to the chicken-farker party.

Have you ever heard anyone but the GOP accused of farking that chicken?

No, but since it's a meme that's over a year old some stupid right wing troll here will quote it back at someone calling them on their bullshiat.

They rip everything off because they aren't clever enough to come up with their own.

Yup, but even when they do steal stuff, it's always off.

/Remember the thread when the candidates comparison macros started? Every liberal knew instantly how to riff on it, but the chicken-farkers failed when they tried to make their own versions. In fact instructions and advice were given in the thread to assist, but they still couldn't get it. One could say they were farking the fail chicken.

lennavan: Serious Post on Serious Thread: Extrapolate from there, "you should just leave" is as effective as ttelling an alcoholic "you should just drink moderately"

You do realize in your analogy, alcoholics actively choose to place themselves in situations where they will not drink alcohol. You could then extrapolate that to abuse victims should choose to place themselves in situations where they will not be victimized.

Serious Post on Serious Thread: You don't need domestic violence prevention classes to understand it's not about "making a decision". There's some psychological compulsion, ever have an addiction, or know an alcoholic, or obese person

Actually, it is. I get what you're trying to do here and your goal is fine but don't tear down and wildly misportray alcoholism in the process. Recovering alcoholics make better decisions such as to not go out to a place where alcohol is. They realize they are powerless over alcohol, so they don't choose to "just have one" because they know they can't just have one. That my friend, is making a decision.

Fair enough, but there's a difference between 'choosing to get help' and just 'choosing to get better'.
And sure, a victim of abuse can choose to get help (although i assume some situations are bad enough to preclude even that step), and an alcoholic at least has the knowledge that the beverage they are about to consume or place they are about to enter has booze; little tough to know right off the bat if a person is abusive, and frankly it may develop slowly over years.

Zerochance: Mike Chewbacca: Zerochance: Lionel Mandrake: Hobodeluxe: And now we have this conservative blonde shill #43568 saying that it's genetic for women to be dominated by men. That nature wants them to be submissive. and so does Jesus.

What a stupid, horrible, stupid person.

My buddy's fundie uber-conservative stepdad gave a speech during his rehearsal dinner that was pretty much this same thing. He said the marriage would work out if the wife submits to the husband and they both submit to Jesus Christ.

I feel bad for your buddy's mom.

I currently live in the South. That shiat is pretty common here.

My aunt married a guy like that. He's a worthless piece of shiat. He's a typical Tea Party derper. Whe she married him, she was a strong, self-confident single mom with a career and a house. 17 years later, when she finally left him, she was financially devastated, broken, incapable of making good decisions (except to leave him, but of course she only took about 12 years too long to make it), and has forgotten how to parent. My ex-uncle hates socialism but refuses to work (hence the "financially devastated" part) and is now trying to get on full disability. He remarried one year after the divorce was finalized to a Fundie Tea Party woman just as farked in the head as him. Their house is in foreclosure, and lives there rent free while my aunt (who owns half the house) is living in a hotel while working out housing arrangements. He's failed to pay child support for over a year, but my aunt can't do anything about it because she just left the state with their son, and she knows he'lkenzie her move back if she takes him to court. He believes that the man of the house is the authority figure, and that women are inferior to men, including my incredibly smart aunt (who is a nurse, btw). He used to clash with my female cousin (his stepdaughter) because he demanded her complete obedience but she saw right through his bullshiat. She wasn't allowed to wear Halloween costumes because Satan (but of course her little brother was always allowed to dress up, even on years she wasn't) she couldn't watch Buffy or Charmed because Satan, but her 9 year old brother was allowed to play violent video games like Rainbow Six and Call of Duty and Borderlands.

Two years later, my aunt is still a very damaged woman. Her son has major behavioral issues because his father never disciplined him (but of course my female cousin had to pay rent at 16 years old). It is heartbreaking for my cousin and I because we remember her as much stronger, but in retrospect she relied on my female cousin so much that when she (my cousin) joined the Navy, my aunt completely fell apart.

The kicker? Kevin never laid a finger on my aunt (in part because she's 4 inches taller than him and physically strong from lifting patients), he only ever manipulated her and played mind games. And yet it took her 17 years to get over him, and she'll probably never fully recover. He's farked her up, and he's farked their kid up. And he never laid a finger on either of them. So I'm a bit forgiving of the victims. Brainwashing is a hell of a thing.

It almost never is. When you leave is when you're most likely to wind up dead. Every situation is different with varying dynamics, one has to gauge. Philip Francis Queeg: BarkingUnicorn: Philip Francis Queeg: BarkingUnicorn: Philip Francis Queeg:

So if you are alone on the street, it's your fault when I mug you. I hope you have the courtesy to apologize to me for your errors as you hand over your wallet.

Finding fault with one person does not absolve the other of all fault, necessarily. You have a responsibility to society to not mug people. I have a responsibility to myself to avoid situations in which I am likely to be mugged.

The goal is to minimize muggings. Keep your eye on it instead of on assigning blame.

So, \what punishment should be fall you for your role in the crime? Should you do more or less jail time than me?

Jail time is society's punishment for the mugger. The mugged is punished by his losses. Each learns from his punishment according to his ability.

So i should get to keep your money so that you are appropriately punished for your errors.

Women who leave their batterers are at 75% greater risk of severe injury or death than those who stay. (Source: National Coalition Against Domestic Violence).

If someone is packing, then there is the thought- even if deeply buried- that they might actually HAVE to use that gun. I'm not sure if a willingness to do so goes along with that or not.

I do know a woman who just got her concealed carry permit, and she now packs at all times.
Some of her statements disturb me, as they frequently have a "Bet if he'd known I was packing he wouldn't have _________" (fill in blank for dumbass behavior)...
or worse, a "Go ahead, make my day!" flavor about them.

2012-12-07 05:24:12 PM
As long as the public response to domestic violence is saying to the victims, "You should have done more to protect yourself," or the 'far more enlightened', "Here's what you can do to protect yourself in the future," rather than coming down on the perpetrators, this will continue to be a problem.

2012-12-07 05:31:30 PM

Jim_Callahan: Well, that's actually 100% true. If you're in an abusive relationship, you should have exercised better judgement in picking your partner, unless the basis of the relationship was her literally kidnapping you and tying you up. Relationships are voluntary, guys.

You know how some of the Benghazi chickenfarkers are mocked for looking at things with the benefit of hindsight and then blaming people for not responding to information that they couldn't have possessed barring psychic powers or time travel? Same principle applies here. Just because something bad happened doesn't mean that there was some clearly visible red flag that the victim was "stupid" to ignore.

Of course, in hindsight, everything looks like a sign - "Just look at the way that guy walks... look at the way he talked to that checkout lady... of course he's the kind of guy who would beat somebody up for no reason" - but it doesn't work like that when you're making decisions in real time.
