I think everyone is approaching this suicide (assuming it is a suicide) from the wrong perspective.

In past times, a samurai who failed to protect his master would commit ritual suicide to remove the shame of his failure.

So rarely does such dedication and honour still exist in the world.

This lady should be respected for her choice not pitied.

reillan: . It's still the pranksters fault for being douchenozzels to a sweet person,

Er, no. They played a prank. She completely failed to do her job. If she had have been doing her job properly they would never have gotten anywhere with the prank.

Have you ever worked in healthcare, or handled people's private information? I don't know about in the UK and America but here random relatives can't just call and ask for health information. In my job we would not even release that information to a spouse over the phone. Being the Queen does not exempt one from privacy laws, so even if it HAD been the ACTUAL Queen on the phone the nurse should not have been releasing the information.

Here are the rules I work under:

1. Unless the patient has given prior (preferably written) authority NO ONE can have access to information about their medical condition, even their immediate family. No, not even their spouse. Privacy is an individual right.

2. We won't release any information over the phone to an authorised party without several data points confirming that they are who they say they are.

If one of my colleagues had done what this nurse appears to have done (or the original call-taker has done, by failing to confirm identity and authority before passing the call through) it would lead to immediate dismissal as it is a major policy and legal breach.

So I really don't believe the hospital when they claim to have stood behind the nurse. No hospital would" support" such a massive illegal breach of privacy whether it happened to a Duchess or a homeless person.

I don't think these kinds of pranks are particularly funny, and the radio station deliberately breaching the privacy of anyone (famous or otherwise) for kicks is a dick move of epic proportions. But again, if the nurse and/or call-taker hadn't failed so massively in their duty to protect the privacy of their patients the prank would never have got off the ground. The radio station could not have forseen a clearly mentally unstable and incompetent nurse would kill herself over it.

Dumbasses, she held her life in her own hands. These guys had no reason to think they would cause her death. The nurse is solely responsible for her suicide. The DJs are without blame. She should have 1) hung up, or 2) let them through and wish she hadn't, and resolve not to kill herself.

DickDarlington: // exit fark mode

This poor lady was just living her life, working everyday and suddenly got pushed into a world wide news story by being ridiculed by these radio idiots. Mentally stable or not, that's a lot for anyone to endure. I always thought a joke was funny if BOTH people got a laugh out of it, not just the prankster.

// ok, back to my life on fark.

they are not without blame. Their prank was performed in the context of their job and then spread worldwide by I would imagine their own company. I'm not saying they are responsible for her death but they are responsible for impersonation in hopes to obtain private personal information not sure if that is against the law but I would think somehow it might be in the UK and down under.

tl;dr - but has nobody mentioned, directly, that part of what's to blame is a culture that worships human beings and places them on such a high pedestal? Just because of being born? Because I could see f'ing up wrt the royal family being a much, much huger deal than any other type of being pranked situation.

Can't this turn into a 'monarchy is dumb and evil' thread?

(maybe it already has).

No worse than celebrities of any other stripe. It is the fans and the rabid media, not the Royals, who are at fault here.

Seriously, if you actually laugh at prank call radio hosts you have a serious failure in your humour-engine because that shiat is weak.

Over a decade old and I still laugh every single time.

I didn't mean to blame or poo poo the royals themselves, but the system of it and the attendant obsession - and yeah, I do think there is something bigger / different about the monarchy as compared to even celebrities (which isn't to say that celebrity worship is great and whatnot) - The sort of sense of SHAME and HORROR that someone who viewed the monarchy as SO IMPORTANT and greater-than might feel after doing something wrong wrt them... I could see that being a bigger deal than if it were a normal person, or even a celebrity.

Er, no. They played a prank. She completely failed to do her job I am an ignorant wanker who cannot read worth shiate. If sShe had have been[sic] WAS doing her NURSING job properly they would never have gotten anywhere with the prank but then got pulled away at the last minute to answer the stupid phones, which was outside of her comfort zone/professionally trained expertise. Similarly, if someone like 'if I really have to' happens to be a really awesome telephone earpiece cleaner destined for the next intergalactic human-existence-saving-trip but is pulled away to build a stairway to heaven, most likely that stairway would fall apart, since it is outside of his comfort zone.

did not read this yet did not read this yet did not read this yet etc etc etc wash rinse repeat

I suspect a conspiracy. The name of the nurse who "committed suicide" was named Jacintha Saldanha. An anagram for that name is "Ashcan Natal Jihad". Perhaps they are trying to throw off 007 and the international media...?

Jurodan: Except... the law already has something about that. It's called the "you take your victim as you find him rule", otherwise known as the eggshell skull rule. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eggshell_skull

If you trespass and cause someone a heart attack, it's your fault. If you prank someone and they kill themselves? I'm unsure if that'd be enough, but I'd have to see the case.

Except (the last I heard anyway) we don't know why or how she died. It could just be an unfortunate coincidence.

Tin foil hat says the Royal Family had her killed. I don't really believe that. I also find it hard to believe she died from remorse or shock from the prank call but then again I don't worship the Royal Family as God.

England still believes in the Divine Right of Kings (and Queens), don't they?

Well,
no matter how you feel about morning radio (I find it sucks). I am not sure how you could blame a suicide on this. Really, if answering the phone and giving someone information which is already publicly available is enough to cause you to suicide. Mmm, you are probably very close to the edge anyway and waking up and finding only odd sock would be enough to send you over.

But, you know who did find the prank funny?
This guy www.ijreview.com

When reporters asked him a question yesterday he replied "how do you know I'm not a radio station?"

/probably doesn't find suicide a joking matter
//his father might

2012-12-08 08:44:39 AM

scottydoesntknow: Dinjiin: Except that this wasn't minor douche-baggery. The prank resulted in world-wide media attention and could have led to her job being terminated.

And if she had done what's actually required (you know, screening callers), the call never would've made it back there, confidential information never would've been leaked, and the prank would've failed miserably.

People aren't robots. They're going to make mistakes. That's why you incorporate the possibility of social engineering in when you set up security for someplace, and even at best efforts, something will slip through. Especially in a high stress job such as nursing.
People always forget that the person at fault in a social engineering attack is the attacker, not the victim.
