Some people just don't understand that the judge is the GM of the court and that he can, in fact, force you to roll a 1.

This. Who the hell would even think that talking on your cell phone in a courtroom would be anywhere near OK?
If you're anywhere above clinically retarded, you'll shut the thing off (not silent, but OFF) before you even cross the threshold.

From TFA:

some things you probably shouldn't do:

Talk loudly on your cell phone.

Ignore the judge when he tells you to leave the courtroom.

Argue with the court officer who escorts you out of the room.

Continue to struggle with court officers outside, then punch one of them in the face.

It sounded misdemeanor-y until the punch.

How did she get the cell phone into the court room? The couple times I have been there to face traffic ticket, I had to go through security doors that cell phones were not allowed. I had to leave it in the car.

It's no that people are any more or less polite. It's that nowadays we expect everyone to have a modicum of decorum. Whereas in the past there used to be an under-class that we expected to behave slightly better than animals.

When you say Traffic Ticket do you mean Criminal Court Appearance that you are trying to hide from us? Because one lets you have cell phones, and one does not.

I like the comment that says the Judge should be banned because the taxpayers own the courtroom, not him. I wonder if she's been introduced to The Joys of the Sovereign Citizen yet.

Enh, to be fair there are circumstances. I had a child in the hospital when I had to testify as a witness and told the judge. He told me it was fine if I left the cell on and if the hospital called to tell him and he'd let me off the stand/call a recess. The trick is to ask politely in a manner which shows you respect their authority (and have a legit need).

There seems to a whole generations of people now who think they are owed respect but won't show any to anyone and will react violently if they believe someone is disrespecting them, no matter who it is, in this case a judge and the court officers.

It seems like they would rather be arrested and go to jail than act in any way as if they accepted that someone else might have power over them. The only thing they seem to submit to is force, not the threat of force but the actual use of force.

Judges are corrupt---shoot them all

Meh, the whole "proper decorum" thing can get out of hand. I once went to court and got pulled aside by the bailiff for not wearing a coat and tie. He escorted me into the broom closet where they kept a few blazers and ties handy for miscreants like myself. The judge looked at me like "oh, you're wearing that."

But even entering a court room without first turning the phone off is just asking for trouble. There's a traffic court judge here who confiscates them and donates the proceeds to the battered women's shelter once a month. It's amazing how many people are dumb enough to think they can talk on the phone when there's a huge sign on the door warning against it.

This woman is an asshat who deserves whatever penalty is imposed upon her. This case is also a good argument for allowing cell phone jammers in this country. Install one of sufficient power to cover the entire courtroom. Put the switch at the bench within reach of the judge. Arrogant biatch starts talking on her phone, the judge flips the switch, problem solved.

here's the reason you don't talk bad towards a judge, not once but TWICE... good way to spend 4 months for nothing.

that is not a legit circumstance. who cares about some kid in a hospital ? you can't change anything from where you are so the information is not really important. this sounds made up. if it was sooooo serious, you would have just skipped court to be their for your snowflake's last breath.

oh but for the children blah.

You'd be surprised. I've had the pleasure of the court system twice (divorce and custody modification). You'd think people were raised in barns. There's even a sign on the court door that says "turn cell phones OFF". My ex was busted texting during our modification. The judge told her to turn it off, she told him that the phone functionality was off but she still needed to text as she was waiting to hear back from her loan officer to purchase a new car. He told her to turn it off or lose it. He glanced at me for about 3 milliseconds. In that moment we exchanged a lot. I got the modification order I was seeking.

Is that a racist observation?

Back when the first Matrix movie was in theaters my roommate and I were seeing it for the first time and, just prior to the introduction of the Oracle character my roommate turns to me and says, "I bet it's a fat black woman." It was funny because it was meant to be ironic, improbable, and then he was right.

When I read the headline I thought to myself, "I bet it's a fat black woman." It's not funny. It's just sad. And one of my unnecessary stereotypes has been reinforced.

/The real question is: would you have reported on it if she wasn't a fat black woman?

Oh great. More government spending on some techno-crap that won't work properly. You liberals are always coming up with new ways of solving problems with expensive solutions instead of well-deserved beatings.
