I think any reasonable, sane, patriotic, freedom-loving, tax-cutting, non-baby-killing, anti-stupid-liberal person would have to choose John Boehner on this one.

Boehner.

Never underestimate the "negotiating" power of a man with a tiny brain and a huge bladder in an open-ended meeting.

He doesn't strike me as a strong bladdered man. Same with his bowel control.

You know Cantor will sink any deal, though.

I assume that this means Boehner is going to go in there and throw the tea party caucus members under the bus.

Jesus. So Boehner has to leave the bubble, negotiate alone with Master Troll Barack Obama, and then hope to come out of that room and not be flayed alive when he reveals the agreement?

No deal. There will be no deal because Boehner is a puss and can't bring himself to pull the trigger till he can do the political calculus. Dude's a real life Colonel Cathcart.

I doubt it. He might make a courtesy attempt to gently guide them into the street with a bus coming, but if it looks like they'll get railed he'll swoop in and sink the deal himself.

If he doesn't, Cantor does, and Boehner takes a beating in the press from both sides while Cantor becomes the veep in 2016.

It is well known that Obama will attempt to get a third term with some slick legal maneuvering and a stacked court.

" . . . the drop in the unemployment rate appeared to reflect a continued exodus of workers from the labor force. The labor force participation rate, already around 30-year lows, fell further in the month to 63.6 percent."

It's why he wants us to go over the fiscal cliff so the country will be so weakened by the austerity that we won't be able to resist when he makes marginal gains, makes us love him, and then proclaims himself Emperor.

Who cares? Boehner won't budge on raising taxes for the rich. Obama won't budge on not raising taxes for the rich. If neither does a damned thing, taxes get raised on everybody, including the rich. Obama doesn't have to move on this one. He did so two years ago, as folks seem to forget, and now that the deadline's come up again, the GOP wants to ride that "sunset provision" into the sunset.

Go over the cliff. I'll pay the extra taxes if it means we get to cut the deficit, reduce military spending, and keep social programs intact.

And, as an aside, this is why you don't trust any legislation with a "sunset provision" in it - that's the compromise the rich made to get the bennie, knowing full well that when it comes up, they can just pay their Congresscritters to extend it. It's my firm belief that any legislation with a "sunset provision" should not be extended.

Unfortunately, due to Obama's renewal of stem-cell research, by the time his plan comes to fruition human cloning and expediting of biological growth will be possible thus every level of government will be Barack Obama.

"Shouldn't the president lay out his plan?" Mr. Sessions asked. "He's the president of the United States and the only one who represents everybody. Or will that remain a secret? Will it just be revealed to us on the eve of Christmas or on the eve of the new calendar year and we will be asked to vote for it like lemmings?"

I'm wondering how many more times the GOP will keep repeating this talking point. Obama's plan is out there, findable on the interwebs, for anybody to read. It's been out there for quite some time, actually. It has details on where all the spending cuts are going to come from and everything. You may not LIKE some of those details, but there is a plan.

On the other hand, the GOP leadership cobbled together 3 pages of vague cuts and the removal of unspecified loopholes in response. And they're wondering why they aren't being taken seriously?

Yep. See, they look good to their lobbyists and backers whenever they can reject Obama. That can't happen if they have to construct a useful plan - all but a handful of them are useless at actual cogitation. So, yes, they really do want Obama to keep constructing things they can reject or stymy, because they really are "The Party of No."

They're playing a childish game of tit-for-tat. They've actually gone on record and said, in front of TV cameras, that they basically want the President to announce the cuts that they want so that he gets the "blame" for cutting entitlements. You know, since they're going to get the "blame" for raising rates on the top 2%. Its the old, "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" tactic and it is pathetic.

I can picture it.

Obama's probably sitting behind his desk in the Oval Office, puffing on a electronic cigarette. Both men have a pint of their favorite beverage; Guinness for the President, Cutty Sark (neat) for the Speaker.

Obama takes a long drag, exhales slowly and and simply asks the glassy-eyed orange gentleman, "Give me one good reason to concede anything."

Do you remember how polling showed that "Generic Republican" was projected to beat Obama easily in November, but then once the real Republican contenders started to appear even most Republicans couldn't stand a single one of them of the actual candidates?

Well, it turns out that talking about "Generic Spending Cuts" and "Eliminating Unspecified Deductions" are extremely popular positions with the Republican base, but real and concrete proposals to cut specific spending or eliminate specific deductions turns out to be wildly unpopular.

Heck, the only specific, concrete thing that Romney actually promised to do to eliminate the debt was to cut PBS, which is somewhere around 0.05% of the budget. And if you remember, he was pilloried for it. He never mentioned another specific thing to cut again for the entire campaign, and he never mentioned a single deduction that we would eliminate. It turns out that talking about cutting spending is infinitely more popular than actually cutting spending, and Republicans are going to ride that pony until it dies under them.
