Er... actually the little red-headed girl was introduced in the comic at least as early as 1965, which was years before all of this. Not that I'm a Peanuts scholar or anything, but I just last week read a book that collected all the strips from '65-'66.

Perhaps he was unhappy in his marriage in 1965.

The little red-headed girl was based on a girl named Donna Johnson who Schulz worked with and dated in the late 40s.

Right. I believe this went down when he and his first wife were building the hockey arena. If memory serves correct, his wife was also having an affair with the building contractor for the project. Meh, they were humanly imperfect like we all are.

Also, "Schulz and Peanuts" is probably the best biography I've read in the last 10 years. I recommend it to anyone, whether you're a Peanuts fan or not. He was a fascinating and complex man.

Heard about this last night on the commentary to Season 15 of The Simpsons.

Boy, are those commentaries up-to-date! They're starting to catch up to South Park on topicality, although admittedly the only reason why South Park episodes are so topical is that they are made live during the events they parody. ; )

But seriously, I imagine the cartoon community knew about this sort of thing long before it makes headlines, and they were probably gossiping about different affairs. It's possible new evidence of affairs have come to light since the commentary track was recorded.

By the way, the menus seem to be "misprinted"--the place you have to click can be as much as an inch or two (on my mid-sized screen) away from the symbol. It'll help keep your brain from ossifying when you are 65, or 85, or 105, whatever the new deadline with declining brain power is by the time you watch a Simpsons commentary.

By the way, Daniel Radcliffe is a big fan of Simpson commentaries. He responded to the question "Who watches commentaries?" from an earlier season when he met one of the Simpsons people.
