Articles like this are why newspapers must die.

Last year the U-T was purchased by Douglas Manchester, a hotel Baron who said in interviews he purchased the paper to promote conservative viewpoints. So I guess it's not surprising they're stretching for an OMG PUBLIC EMPLOYEES BAD! article.

Were they taking pictures of the beach to have pictures of the beach, or were they taking pictures of the painted building for documentation purposes?

I've never walked by a construction zone that didn't have a radio on.

"Now I have spent my whole life in construction..."

Construction photographer?

Mr. Grant sounds like a huge pain in the ass.

They were already in the bucket and too some pics. B......F.......D.

You think they did a shiatty job? Fine, point it out and biatch away.
Don't be a little whiny sniveling bag a fecal matter and go on an in-print tirade.

kevinatilusa: Last year the U-T was purchased by Douglas Manchester, a hotel Baron who said in interviews he purchased the paper to promote conservative viewpoints. So I guess it's not surprising they're stretching for an OMG PUBLIC EMPLOYEES BAD! article.

He actually bought the paper for the real estate it sits on and that is all. He paid for the value of the land and the building with every intention of dismantling the business and razing the structure to make way for a new building. The plans haven't been submitted yet do it is unclear if it is going to be a commercial office building or a hotel/resort. As far as the guys on the cherry picker, so farking what. We take pictures of our work all of the time. What if they are a private contractor hired by the city? That means the city got a bid and it cost the same whether it takes 3 weeks or 4 weeks. Another 15 minutes doesn't cost taxpayers a dime, in fact if they don't finish in time the city will usually put on a liquidated damages clause in the contract that states that the contractor has to pay back the city for every day they exceed their deadline so this could return money to the city. Long story short thus guy needs to get a life.

2012-12-06 03:43:31 PM
It would be pretty funny if the guy in the picture came forward to show that he was taking pictures of his completed work as per the job order and sue the paper for libel.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who came away from that wishing a grisly accident upon the douchebag author.

Also, I call bullshiat on the 15 minutes thing. There's no way that would be amusing for more than 5 minutes. Cry-baby jackturds like this farking LOOOOVE to exaggerate. Everything is always stretched to the worst possible degree to make it sound like it was "The. Worst. Thing. Ever."

"They were up there for fiv... fif... thir... an HOUR! And the crane was shakin... leanin... SWAYING... SWAYING VIOLENTLY in the wind!!! and they were spit... peei...pooping off the crane... pooping off the crane ONTO PEOPLE DOWN BELOW... onto TAXPAYERS!!!"

*Forehead smack* There's always people like this. I used to work for a local newspaper a few years ago, and did write various articles on the theme "Look, a local official being corrupt," so after awhile I'd get lots of letters and emails (some anonymous, some not) with tips for stories ranging from "legitimate information about government wrongdoing" to "incredibly petty BS" and "outright lies."

One guy emailed me with claims he'd found some super-huge fraud in a certain state government office which I'd written exposes about before, and then he came by my office one afternoon with a stack of printouts several inches thick, which he said involved some sort of payment fraud which, the way he put it, sounded like fraudulent expense accounts or salary claims, and -- long story short, his BIG FREAKING FRAUDULENT SCANDAL was evidence that sometimes, state computers were being used to play the pre-installed solitaire game.

He was very annoyed when I didn't bother writing about this. State employee pads his expense account -- worth a story. State employee plays solitaire a few minutes before clocking out on Friday afternoon -- meh. No.

The level of stupid here makes me weep for humanity.

Look at the pictures in the article and note the following
1. Where the camera is pointed. They are taking pictures of the building they just painted.
2. The angle of the shadows. The sun is to their right. They are not taking pictures of the sunset.

Also note the wording of the 'watchdog' who 'reported' this.
"It then becomes crystal clear to me they are raising the platform to take photographs of the view! Must be nice to use the taxpayers' dime to be a tourist and taxpayer's dollars to have your own personal photography observation deck."
Translation: I want to go on the bucket ride but they won't let me so nobody should get to go on the bucket ride WAAAAA!

Grant said the workers spent about 15 minutes taking photos and videos with the boom lift extended all the way - he estimated 45 feet tall - with music blaring and the elevated basket swaying in the wind.

And we pay these guys per foot of boom! I mean, maybe if they'd only taken it up to 15 or 20 feet I could have lived with it? But 45 feet? That's just disrespectful to the tax payers!

God forbid that city workers should have enough pride in their work to want to document it. Think of the consequences!

Contractors around here(VA) often charge by the hour however it is in minimum increments of 1 hour so 1:15 = 2 hours, so that 15 minutes could already be paid either way or I guess that could have been the 15 minutes that put them into the next hour so they stole a whole hours pay Maybe they were due a 15 minute break and decided to take it in the bucket truck to document their work. I dunno, if that's the worst problem of inefficiency in that department then things are better than I'd expect.

The photographer was treated by nearby San Diego lifeguards, who assured Grant that the bite was not severe enough to take precautions against rabies.

Yeah, Pit bull "attacks" him, and bites him, yet doesn't break the skin...

Assuming the two stories are the same guy really changed my perception of the dog article. FTFA: "Grant told Channel 10 News that he he fought off the dog by kneeing it in the chest. He said the dog's owner witnessed the attack but 'took off the minute he saw I was making a phone call. He grabbed his dog, put the dog in his vehicle, and sped out of the parking lot.'"

I'm guessing a friendly lab jumped up on him and accidentally scratched his forearms.

... facepalm.

Chances are they were just being idiots on their 15 minute break. Using city equipment, not smart. But I worked at a beach as a state employee and would always go take pictures on my 15 minute break. Not a crime, folks. Not something worthy of watch-dogging, crying about, mentioning to anybody, etc.

But the boombox on the boom crane... yeah that was stupid. THAT is what'll get them into trouble.

Why do they need to die? It's all online now for free. Has been for years. Perhaps the internet should die, is that what you really are saying? Hell we don't even need news outlets to filter the truth because Facebook does it for you!

I'm guessing, no.
