Based on the article's list, these proposed GOP changes would get me more interested:

- Move To The Left!
- Throw Social Conservatives Under The Bus
- Throw Rich People Under The Bus
- Ditch That Embarrassing Iowa Straw Poll

Make the party entirely about fiscal conservatism and ditch the social conservatism bullshiat that none of us moderates can stomach. Because right now, the fiscally moderate, socially liberal democrats are a much better fit for us.

FTFA: Former Rep. Steve LaTourette's (R-OH) dismissed the notion the party wasn't conservative enough in 2012 as "crap" after Romney lost.

I'd expect him to say something like that...

Steal Obama's Ideas
After recovering from his nervous breakdown on election night, Karl Rove recommended that Republicans copy President Obama's campaign methods in 2016.

I had to laugh at this. We were all afraid of some Jedi-level Rovian mindtricks during the Romney campaign and they just never materialized. Now his solution is to copy the Obama campaign? So funny on so many levels--he really has nothing left.

Besides, by the time the GOP copies the Obama campaign--whether it's their advertising, ground game, polling, or whatever--they'll still be playing catch-up. Meanwhile, whatever the DNC will have created from their solid foundations will look something akin to magic.

Convince Latinos That They're American
Minorities would vote for the GOP, according to National Review's Jonah Goldberg, if only they realized their true "American-ness."

Um... they already DO think they are American. YOU, however, do not.

Just Pretend Democrats Don't Exist
One way to prevent losing to Democrats again is to simply deny that Democrats are real. You can't lose to something that's not real, can you? Former Ron Paul aide Eric Dondero is putting this theory to the test, promising after the election never to interact with Democrats, any Democrats - in just about any capacity - ever again. He might make an exception for rescuing a drowning person, but don't count on it. Dondero called on his fellow Libertarians to do the same.

Oh, how will we survive the tragic loss of his company?

Yes, it is the minorities fault for not thinking properly. Perhaps if more of us angry white guys tell them how to think that'll fix things.

Court The Stoner Vote
Rand Paul, expected to run for presidentin 2016, has a plan to draw young people back to the party: legalize pot. Or at least support states' rights to loosen drug laws, like Colorado did in 2012.

Liberals and leftist types have been trying to get pot legalized for as long as I can remember. They also are always fighting for decriminalization and medical. You can look at the states with sensible laws and they are almost all if not all blue states. So sick of libertarian douches glomming onto to liberal causes and calling them theirs and their alone.

Divide et impera

My God, I've watched elections since Nixon/Humphrey. I have never seen a national party fall into so many fragments, into so much disarray. The Democratic Party will have a blood feast with this.

This is a good thing/and a bad thing.

"Libertarians" are authoritarian capitalists who throw around twisted-up versions of leftist rhetoric on social issues to attract support for their hideous economic and political agenda... And when the rubber hits the road (or the oil hits the anus, I guess) their support for those social issues evaporates.

Because that worked so well for his father, right?

Most people, even stoners aren't one issue voters. If you promise them legal weed but they have to give up things like a stable social safety net to get it, that's a non-starter.

Honestly, there isn't a fix.

Their base is shrinking, but it's still their base. They can't win a national presidential election with these guys (unless they cheat like mad), but they can still gerrymander enough to win the House, and maybe even the Senate in a bad year.

On the other hand, if they make real changes (avoiding abortion or gay marriage, immigration reform that offers a real path to citizenship, raising taxes back to, say, Ford-era rates), they'll completely destroy their base AND since not enough people from outside of their base will immediately trust their Heel-Face Turn, they'll not only lose the White House, but the House and Senate as well.

The GOP is just going to stick with their base, try to hold onto power at the state and local levels where they can (until the Democrats figure out how to get their base out in mid-terms and special elections and such), and try to gerrymander their way into at least consistent minority power. The alternative is self-destruction, and there is no proof that they would survive as the second major party.

Of course, the wild card is if the Tea Partiers and the social conservatives get impatient and splinter away from the GOP anyway, which equals instant destruction.

The GOP is farked, is what I'm trying to say.

How does one redraw a state's boundary oh wise one?

America has fairly liberal immigration laws. Republicans are going to lose because we've reached the point where lying corrupt politicos have enough of a base to guarantee continuing power. Which is why con men like Harry Reid, who made his millions on bribes and scams, will never worry about his job.

The slurs against Republicans have been accepted as fact.

That was a poorly worded sentence. Let me re-write it for your understanding:

"They can't win a national presidential election with these guys (unless they cheat like mad), but they can still gerrymander enough to win the House. They may even be able to win the Senate back in a bad year."

Proceed.

Keep on listening to your hate radio and watching Fox News. You can trust them because they will definitely stick it to the libs and that's the most important thing.

2012-12-06 03:17:42 PM
At this point they're circling the drain; no matter what they do they're farked.

If they change nothing, their base will continue to shrink (ie, die) and they'll lose power slowly.

If they change anything, they will lose some portion of their base (social conservatives, libertarians, etc) and they'll lose power immediately.

There's a chance that if they do drop the social conservative rhetoric they might seem more appealing to a large portion of the US. But as was said earlier, that kind of 180 degree turn isn't going to be trusted immediately and by the time it is, it may be too late.

/Personally, I'm hoping to Tea Party murder/suicide pacts over any forthcoming Republican changes.

Until the conservative base and the pundits on the right start talking about making changes, the GOP is going to stay in its death spiral. The elected GOPers, like Rubio, can talk all they want but not one of them is in any way a leader on the conservative side.

The thing that made the GOP have political power, money, is now the thing that is crippling them. The de-facto leaders on the right make too much money spouting insanity to want to stop.

Latinos are culturally conservative and I think leaned more towards Republican until they took a hard anti-immigration stance.
