The lead vocals for Alt-J sounds like Adam Sandler. And not normal-voice Adam Sandler, comedic voice Adam Sandler. Billy Madison/ Happy Gilmore Adam Sandler. Fitzpleasure is a good example of that.

Happy to see Japandroids, Dirty Projectors on here. But no Blunderbuss or Wrecking Ball?

Five grammy nominations terrible ... for what credibility the grammy's still have.

See, the problem is that now that they've let people know these albums exist, these albums can no longer be the best albums because people may have actually listened to them.

The Best List I've Seen So Far. though my tendency is towards rock, so you won't find much country or pop or hip hop or rap in here.

Glad Cody Chestnutt and Womack made the list

I would throw XX Coexist on there, yes it's pretty similar to their first album but damn it's a great listen

Meh. Commercial success that wins a Grammy doesn't mean the music has to actually be good.

I suppose most of my frustration with Fun is that my local "alternative" radio station plays the everloving sh*t out of them. And I don't really consider them alternative at all. Their whiny lyrics and forgettable sound position them more to be on a Top 40 station than any self-respecting alternative station.

alternative to what?
Even the garage band resurgence was made top40 and pop out of the gate, only after the first wave died out did we get Black Keys and Japandroids. New music trends are cannibalized by pop so fast these days they can only become alternative after the initial wave. You have Taylor Swift putting out dubstep inspired tracks for FSM's sake.

Yes, that would be a vast improvement, but I don't drive often enough for it to be worth it.

Gunny Highway: MisterLoki: Titus Andronicus- Local Business

I will have to check that out. Really enjoyed The Monitor and had a blast at their show.

I also enjoyed Baroness: Yellow & Green

Local Business is a very different album that took a while to grow on me. I don't like it as much as I like The Monitor, but it is still quite good.

They have a Red and Blue album. The Blue album is one of my favorites ever. Fun to listen to if you are driving early in the morning.

Rhianna had some great stuff. So did Lil Wayne. Kanye West and Jay Z did a solid collaboration.

This is what I listened to on the way to work. Other stuff made my top ten. I'll fill it in later.

Some Nights may have the worst lyrics of any song, ever.

alabama Shakes - YAY

Man, Iris Dement aged.

2012-12-06 10:50:03 AM
Pallbearer and Swans were the only albums on that list that I've heard. Which probably says more about the type of music I listen to than anything else

2012-12-06 10:59:53 AM
My favorites (in no particular order):

- Tame Impala: Lonerism Maybe it's because I thought Innerspeaker was over-rated and therefore, i had lower expectations for Lonerism, but this one completely knocked it out of the park. Where Innerspeaker seemed over-reliant on effects instead of songwriting, Lonerism makes up for it and seems more sonically complete.

- Melody's Echo Chamber The sister album to Tame Impala's Lonerism has a bit more of a pop bent to it.

- Swans: the Seer I wasn't too impressed with this right away - I blame the jumble nonsensical track running order- but it feels surpisingly brisk well for a 2 hour long album.

- Regular John: Strange Flower like a more psychedelic version of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

- Moon Duo: Circles Not too different from previous albums, but the band gets better and better with each release.

- Mothlite: The Dark Age Sounds like NIN/Coil performing Colour of Spring-era Talk Talk

- Goat: World Music My favorite debut of the year. On paper it sounds like a mess - a Swedish band performing Africanised psychedelic rock in the vein of Can or Black Sabbath- but it's surprisingly consistent.

- godspeed you black emperor! - Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! an extremely welcome surprise release. It doesn't quite work as a whole album, but the individual tracks are all winners.

- Alcest: les voyages de L'Ame He gets better and better with each album.

2012-12-06 11:01:14 AM
A couple of my favorites this year, in no particular order or numerical subset:

1. Alcest- Les Voyages De L'Âme
2. Agalloch- Faustian Echoes
3. Baroness- Yellow & Green
4. Royal Thunder- CVI
5. Dethklok- Dethalbum III
6. Down- Down IV Part I
7. Witchcraft- Legend
8. Neurosis- Honor Found in Decay
9. Abigail Williams- Becoming
10. Lord Dying- What is Not...Is

Sweet! I discovered two albums (so far) that I'm currently listening to: Andy Stott's "Luxury Problems" (insanely good if you're into the genre) and Cody Chestnutt's "Landing on a Hundred," which sounds like a Marvin Gaye record.

I love these lists.

Lots and lots of pretentious, hipster crap with a few decent records - Cohen, Womack - thrown in to appease the older listeners.

And this: Neenah Cherry 'is a global pop star' who hasn't released a record in 12 years?

Fark you, NPR writer, for this nonsense.

She was a '1 hit wonder' with "Buffalo Stance" from what? 20 years ago and hasn't released an album in 12 years and you are so farking stupid as to call her a 'global pop star'.

On which globe, NPR, because it sure isn't Earth.

Idiot.
