Big Man On Campus: H31N0US: Big Man On Campus: Not Surveyed: China

I take it you've never been. You should get out more.

What some cities in China may look like:

Those stacks of backs are e-waste sitting in the streets of Guiyu, lining the streets. That man is carrying phone casings on two tricycles to be re-used.

JohnCarter: Article did not define the criteria, and these BEST of and WORST of rarely do. If you actually read the questions one can see why a city is first or last

It's definitely subjective - my idea of a good place to live may be wildly different from someone else.

But the main reason US cities rate so low is because of violent crime, which despite the fact that it is lower than it has been for decades it is still much higher than in most other western countries.

One thing known to drive violent crime is poverty and one thing known to drive poverty in an otherwise wealthy nation is unequal opportunity - perhaps due to racial / ethnic discrimination.

I would think Damascus or Aleppo (spelling?) would be number one, what with there's a war going on and all.

Heist: Europe has 15 of the world's top 25 cities in the 2012 survey. Germany and Switzerland each have three in the top 10.

Canadian cities dominated rankings in the Americas region

Quality of life has a liberal bias, it seems.

Nothing like living safely under America's wing to free up your defense budget for other uses.

whistleridge: Clearly whomever compiled this ranking has never been to:

* Pyongyang

On the plus side... you're reeeeeeeeeally unlikely to be the victim of street crime.

Osomatic: I'm sure Vienna is a perfectly lovely place to live, as long as you don't mind having to live with a bunch of farking Austrians.

God, Amen to that.

RaisedOnATARI: Thanks W.

You did say you plan to "knock them back to the stoneage"

As much as I dislike the man, I'm not sure we can lay this one on W. Something tells me it's more the fault of the blood drenched psychopath that tore the place up for a quarter of a century.

/Call it a hunch

Guess what? Austrians most likely say something similar about Americans.

My sister loved her holiday to US last year - the only downside in her opinion was it was "full of bloody yanks".

That is her opinion by the way, not mine. I used it to illustrate that Americans are generally not well liked in other countries.

Was it all of the Hitler jokes? My insistence on talking about the war? My inability to get all excited at the idea of dying?

I couldn't help myself.

None of the above. Non-Americans seem to hate Americans simply because.

Oh I know. I've seen it, and I take pains to be an unusually modest and polite tourist.
