You'd be surprised how good Internet access is in this Colombian sewer!

Entire Article:

Restrepo rests with Blackie and his wife Maria on their bed on Dec. 4 inside the sewer they call home. The living area is equipped with a stove, a television and a fan, which are powered by electricity that Restrepo rigged up.

MadMonk: Ah, luxury!

We were evicted from *our* hole in the ground; we had to go and live in a lake!

You were lucky to have a LAKE! There were a hundred and sixty of us living in a small shoebox in the middle of the road.

Cardboard box?

Aye.

You were lucky.

Sure, the Colombian sewer is worse at the moment, but a few more years of ineptitude and corruption in the Illinois state government and the Colombian sewer might be preferable.

Many homeless people in Colombia seek shelter underground because of the drug trafficking and gang violence that plagues Medellin.

I saw a documentary, or maybe it was part of an episode of vice guide to travel or it might have been an episode of vanguard.. but anyways... they were saying the homeless flee to the sewers at night because shopowners and other businessmen hunt and kill them to keep the blight aspect down in their communities.

In the sewer he lived,
In the sewer he died,
They said it was murder,
But it was sewer-side.

That depends...what's the rent? I live in a cesspool right now, so a sewer might be a nice change of pace.

The man's name is RESTRPO of course he's tough.

He probably has a half a handful of freezing gravel for breakfast.

Yeah, that's all fine and dandy until Monsoon Season starts up again, and then chunks of your remains get fished out of a clog a mile downstream a month later. shiatty way to die, that.

Huh. How about that.

I think I know what I'm proposing at the next city council meeting.

Yeah, it was a Vice guide. I watched the same one just a few days ago. The upscale residents reportedly hire death squads to take care of all the homeless children living on the streets so many of them go in to the sewers. This in itself is hazardous enough when dealing with disease, flash floods coming at night to wash you away and ROUS'. Now factor in a pissed off death squad that just wasted a bunch of ammo over the course of a few nights by firing indiscriminately in to the sewers in an effort to get you and who now, in a stroke of genius, decide to just pour gasoline down the manholes and set them afire. I'm seeing a young Snake Bliskin meets Slumdog Millionaire meets Dante's Inferno.

I would recommend the video highly. Come for the shaitsicles stay for the...actually, don't stay. Send help.

Not too many flash floods in Medellin lately, and the gang violence in Medellin is not targeted at homeless or poor, but turf wars or settling beefs between rival gangs.

Medellin is a far cry from what it was in 1989, which is evident by the tons of american expats living there.

Colombians have been living in the sewers for years, old news is old.

I love their stuff, if you haven't watched the Romney family mormon settlers in mexico series you should check that out too, really interesting.

I will do that. I wanted to watch the one on Liberia again and it turned in to an all night Vice-a-thon. Didn't get around to the Romney/Cartel. I think it had to do with not wanting to see Romney's face again for a while. I shall check it out when I get home.

Oh, the one on the gun market in Pakistan is pretty crazy too. Hell, they are all crazy. For a laugh, a sad laugh but one none-the-less, the one on Ugandan moonshine is pretty wacky too.

I think they made the Romney connection just for the extra media attention. You can watch the whole series now in a single video and really they only spend about 5 minutes or less talking to a very nice man who was a cousin of Mitt. The rest of the time was spent with some younger guys who are in a different family.
