INeedAName: Knobbs: JerseyTim: It's cute that we like to say Die Hard is the best Christmas movie and all, but if they're going to include A Charlie Brown Christmas, it should be #1.

Exactly. Hipster list maker is a hipster.

Why? Is it hipster to consider Die Hard the best Christmas movie of all time?! Does it make me a hipster to point out I've spent every Christmas eve for the past 15years watching Die Hard and wrapping the last of the gifts?

Yeah, because it isn't a Christmas movie. It's an action movie that happens to take place at Christmas time. But it's oh so clever to call it a Christmas movie to shock everyone that would expect an actual movie about Christmas, just to prove how tragically hip you are.

It's a fine movie, it's not a Christmas movie.

jdjoker: bobug: No White Christmas?! It's the ubiquitous holiday soundtrack. Who HASN'T heard it?

Holiday Inn (the original title of the movie that features White Christmas) is at #7.

List is for soundtracks. Snow, White Christmas and the other songs on the soundtrack are what make White Christmas better, IMO.

Also see Nightmare Revisited. It's Nightmare Before Christmas with each song as done by a different artist. Marilyn Manson does This Is Halloween and Korn does Kidnap The Santa Claus

I believe that the best possible rebuttal to your statement is "Fark you, it's Die Hard!"

Fiona Apple's cover of Sally's Song is farking great. Panic's cover of this is Halloween isn't bad either and I confessed my love upthread for FOB's What's This?. The only cover I didn't like was the She Want's Revenge cover of Kidnap the Santa Claus. Great album.

I still can't hear "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" without seeing Luca Brasi loading a gun and putting on a bullet-proof vest.

If you are male and are old enough to have been at least a pre-teen when there was no internet, the women from this kind of movie and the Sears catalog =d spank bank material.

I do love that movie though.

I'm glad the Muppet Christmas Carol was included, but A Muppet Family Christmas was pretty great too.

And, for fark's sake, Die Hard falls solidly within the "action" and "Christmas" genres - I don't think anyone is trying to be shocking by claiming it as such anymore. It's been a Christmas movie since it came out.

Oh and the first Die Hard gets the award for worst coroner/paramedics of all time, who the hell puts a guy in a body bag/gurney with his machine gun?

I was a little ashamed it took me until like my 8th time watching to notice that mistake.

By that standard, "It's a Wonderful Life" isn't a Christmas movie, it's a movie about suicide and self discovery that takes place at Christmas time.

Die Hard has Christmas music as well as themes of presents (the bearer bonds MacGuffin), a savior (John McClane) coming to help those who cannot help themselves, angels watching things unfold with great interest (the LAPD... the FBI guys are the bumbling angel stereotype), and even invokes the Grinch with the terrorists.

It's a Christmas movie.

I especially like when David Addison shot the fark out of that guy and then explained the true meaning of Christmas to him while bled out.

I love it when people try to shoehorn meaning in after the fact. "No man, the cops are...uh, like angels or something. And then the Grinch..." "Wait, the Grinch?" "Yeah,it's like...uh, all biblical and stuff. Check it out."

:eyeroll:

Hey, if you can't lighten up in such a discussion you're missing out on the real meaning of the season. Like when McClane, instead of freaking out, just uttered a pithy "Yippee Ki Yay, motherfarker" as he went into the stairwell. He could have listed all the laws that had been broken, but hey, even Santa just goes with his catchphrase of "Ho Ho Ho" sometimes too.

Same thought and I'm happy as hell.

Barricaded Gunman: No mention of "Elf"? Hell,it should be up there for Zooey Deschanel's shower-version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside," but there was a lot of other great stuff as well.

And Zooey singing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" at the end of the film is 20% more awesome than most of the music in all of the films on the list.

The entire movie is full of good songs.

"Christmas With The Kranks" had a far (make that "FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR") better soundtrack album than it at-all deserved (which was produced/compiled by Little Steven Van Zandt).

1.."Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight)" - Ramones
2. "Frosty The Snowman" - The Charms
3. "The Christmas Song": - The Raveonettes
4. "White Christmas" Tina Sugandh
5. "Merry Christmas To All Of The World" - Jean Beovoir
6. "Navidad" - Rene Lavan
7. "Feliz Navidad" - Davie Allan
8. "Hey Santa Claus" - The Chesterfield Kings
9. "Jingle Bell Rock" - Brenda Lee
10. "Joy To The World" - The Butties
11. "Nutscracker Suite" - Brian Setzer
12. "Blue Christmas" - Elvis Presley

The quality of the soundtrack is utterly inversely proportional to the "quality" of the film it accompanies.

Like "Porky's Revenge" (compiled/produced by Dave Edmunds).

1. "High School Nights" - Dave Edmunds
2. "Do You Want to Dance?" - Dave Edmunds
3. "Sleepwalk" - Jeff Beck
4. "I Don't Want to Do It" - George Harrison
5. "Stagger Lee" - The Fabulous Thunderbirds
6. "Blue Suede Shoes" - Carl Perkins
7. "Peter Gunn Theme" - Clarence Clemons
8. "Queen of the Hop" - Dave Edmunds
9. "Love Me Tender" - Willie Nelson
10. "Philadelphia Baby" - The Crawling King Snakes (Robert Plant and Phil Collins)
11. "Porky's Revenge!" - Dave Edmunds
12. "High School Nights" (Reprise) - Dave Edmunds
14. "Honey Don't" - Carl Perkins
15. "Don't Call Me Tonight" - Dave Edmunds

How THAT film warranted THAT quality of musicianship is a mystery for the ages.
