Anytime I hear the song "Do you hear what I hear", I instantly think of Gremlins.

I tend to think of The Nightmare Before Christmas as a Halloween movie. Silly me.

I also sometimes hum 'This is Halloween' when visiting Undercity in WoW.

Good one.

The article writer gets a teensy thing wrong: Chris Sarandon only does Jack Skellington's speaking voice. The singing voice is Danny Elfman himself.

Chris Sarandon delivers Jack's Lament with Shakespearean relish before leaping through the note-perfect pastiche of festive numbers

Isn't that because Danny Elfman himself did the singing for Jack?

Same here. It's a bit like "Singin' in the Rain", though I'm not sure any song has been transformed quite like that one.

South park christmas is awesome and required listening in my house every christmas. Christmas time in hell nevers ceases to make me laugh.

Ha! Pretty good, imo. You wrote just little enough for me to not be completely certain, but I can honestly say, that's the only thing I think about when I hear the song or read the title. Sure it's been in a hundred movies...

Speaking of transformed songs...Some ditty's from the 50's become excellent haunting background music as used in some horror shows, or shows about musicians dying. It's the tinny or canned quality I think, somewhat static-y noise that makes them sound a bit ethereal, like a radio station you can't quite tune in.

Because it's not a Xmas movie?

FTA:After all, you can't be the best Christmas movie of all time without having the best Christmas score to go with it.

I was unaware that we lived in an alternate time-line where either A Christmas Story or It's a Wonderful Life never existed.

Reading that article, there is nothing hipster about the author. This is someone who loves music and seems to really love Christmas, in an un-ironic fashion.

That being said, both INeedAName and I have been trolled (by a knob!). We have lost. As such, we should try to have a nice day.

Nightmare before Christmas is a Halloween movie, but Fallout Boy's cover of What's This? is really good. Anyways Home Alone should be number one regardless. Except the awful TLC song.

Guaraldi is the only one that gets respectable play in my house. Not to say about anything about the movies themselves but that one is absolutely golden.

Accurate.

Also, the best ever version of Jingle Bell Rock was done by the muppets in Muppet Family Christmas.

Indeed, should be #1. List fails without White Christmas and The Grinch. I get that other people have different opinions and all, but dude, c'mon. If Die Hard And Home Alone are there, what about Lampoon's? Here Comes Santa Claus with the SWAT crashing through the windows is classic.

IMO, John Williams' score for Home Alone 2: Lost In New York is vastly superior to his work in the first Home Alone movie.

Yeah I don't know what subby thought was so hard, die hard was for the first two about visiting at Christmas and even released near Christmas.

Still bugs me that die hard 2 had that much snow before Christmas, or that the wife is some huge exec yet the kids weren't flying with her? Maybe the audience would have known they couldn't kill his kids off.

I can see your point of view, but the original songs by other artists on the first home alone sound track are just glorious. I think thats why it gets the nod.

Yeah, because it isn't a Christmas movie. It's an action movie that happens to take place at Christmas time. But it's oh so clever to call it a Christmas movie to shock everyone that would expect an actual movie about Christmas, just to prove how tragically hip you are.

It's a fine movie, it's not a Christmas movie.

Fiona Apple's cover of Sally's Song is farking great. Panic's cover of this is Halloween isn't bad either and I confessed my love upthread for FOB's What's This?. The only cover I didn't like was the She Want's Revenge cover of Kidnap the Santa Claus. Great album.

If you are male and are old enough to have been at least a pre-teen when there was no internet, the women from this kind of movie and the Sears catalog =d spank bank material.

I do love that movie though.

I'm glad the Muppet Christmas Carol was included, but A Muppet Family Christmas was pretty great too.

And, for fark's sake, Die Hard falls solidly within the "action" and "Christmas" genres - I don't think anyone is trying to be shocking by claiming it as such anymore. It's been a Christmas movie since it came out.

Oh and the first Die Hard gets the award for worst coroner/paramedics of all time, who the hell puts a guy in a body bag/gurney with his machine gun?

I was a little ashamed it took me until like my 8th time watching to notice that mistake.

By that standard, "It's a Wonderful Life" isn't a Christmas movie, it's a movie about suicide and self discovery that takes place at Christmas time.

Die Hard has Christmas music as well as themes of presents (the bearer bonds MacGuffin), a savior (John McClane) coming to help those who cannot help themselves, angels watching things unfold with great interest (the LAPD... the FBI guys are the bumbling angel stereotype), and even invokes the Grinch with the terrorists.

It's a Christmas movie.

I especially like when David Addison shot the fark out of that guy and then explained the true meaning of Christmas to him while bled out.

I love it when people try to shoehorn meaning in after the fact. "No man, the cops are...uh, like angels or something. And then the Grinch..." "Wait, the Grinch?" "Yeah,it's like...uh, all biblical and stuff. Check it out."

:eyeroll:

Hey, if you can't lighten up in such a discussion you're missing out on the real meaning of the season. Like when McClane, instead of freaking out, just uttered a pithy "Yippee Ki Yay, motherfarker" as he went into the stairwell. He could have listed all the laws that had been broken, but hey, even Santa just goes with his catchphrase of "Ho Ho Ho" sometimes too.

"Christmas With The Kranks" had a far (make that "FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR") better soundtrack album than it at-all deserved (which was produced/compiled by Little Steven Van Zandt).

1.."Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight)" - Ramones
2. "Frosty The Snowman" - The Charms
3. "The Christmas Song": - The Raveonettes
4. "White Christmas" Tina Sugandh
5. "Merry Christmas To All Of The World" - Jean Beovoir
6. "Navidad" - Rene Lavan
7. "Feliz Navidad" - Davie Allan
8. "Hey Santa Claus" - The Chesterfield Kings
9. "Jingle Bell Rock" - Brenda Lee
10. "Joy To The World" - The Butties
11. "Nutscracker Suite" - Brian Setzer
12. "Blue Christmas" - Elvis Presley

The quality of the soundtrack is utterly inversely proportional to the "quality" of the film it accompanies.

Like "Porky's Revenge" (compiled/produced by Dave Edmunds).

1. "High School Nights" - Dave Edmunds
2. "Do You Want to Dance?" - Dave Edmunds
3. "Sleepwalk" - Jeff Beck
4. "I Don't Want to Do It" - George Harrison
5. "Stagger Lee" - The Fabulous Thunderbirds
6. "Blue Suede Shoes" - Carl Perkins
7. "Peter Gunn Theme" - Clarence Clemons
8. "Queen of the Hop" - Dave Edmunds
9. "Love Me Tender" - Willie Nelson
10. "Philadelphia Baby" - The Crawling King Snakes (Robert Plant and Phil Collins)
11. "Porky's Revenge!" - Dave Edmunds
12. "High School Nights" (Reprise) - Dave Edmunds
14. "Honey Don't" - Carl Perkins
15. "Don't Call Me Tonight" - Dave Edmunds

How THAT film warranted THAT quality of musicianship is a mystery for the ages.
