That's like half of the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album, too.

"Amazing Grace" always makes me tear up.

/They didn't say saddest rock song.

How sad? Sad like Terry Jacks "Season in the Sun" sad, which was sad and bad on so many farking levels that if it gets stuck in your head too long you stab your eardrums with an ice pick sad? Is that what you mean? Or kill yourself at Christmas sad? Or a vapid empty sadness? Or an insane sadness?

WTF is sad about "Amazing Grace?"

It's sad that so many people are confused about what "sad" means.

No fair. Even some of Todd's happy songs are sad. But I love that guy, I lived in his old neighborhood at one point in my life.

If you're talking about sadness over a girl, Elvis Costello's "Allison" will make the room dusty real fast.

I once recorded a Rundgren show, and his mother sought me out to give her a copy. I still have her hand-written thank-you note.

The song I posted above was meant as a joke, it being all about getting VD.

I also wanted to say that I wept profusely at an Eric Clapton show when he played Tears in Heaven so the list sucks without that.

Its odd. I don't listen to a lot of outright sad music.

NiN's Dirt qualifies (I know I'm in the minority, but I just don't care for the Cash version).

And this is a pretty sad song, too.

Written or performed? Because Hurt got a whole hell of a lot sadder once Johnny Cash made that song his.

SilentStrider: NiN's Dirt qualifies (I know I'm in the minority, but I just don't care for the Cash version).

One, point and laugh at the h to d typo. Two, seriously? I can't think of anyone else who says they don't like Cash's version.

And I'm going to be made fun of a lot here, but this is the saddest song that I'm familiar with. Plus I have, or rather had, issues with that whole album. Used to love it, but it made me think of someone I had no wish to think about anymore. Tried listening again last week and it evoked no feelings of her, so that made me happy.

I guess I'm old, but not sure why this didn't make the list.

Oh, and this is an utterly fantastic song that is somehow uplifting and depressing. Sara Bareilles writes some of the most greatest stuff for being a pop artist.

Wow, I don't know what I was thinking with that typo. Maybe confusing the AiC album Dirt.

And I don't dislike the Cash version, but the NiN version is the one I prefer.
