Only ever tried the Boston Lager since that's all we see from Boston Brewery around here, I wasn't terribly impressed but I'm not much of a lager person.

Me, I love me some of this stuff though from a brewery around here.

I've never heard of it, and I've seen just about all the seasonal and short release beers around here. I'm at the edge of their distribution, but I still get awesome beer.

I have to say that the Boston Lager is a really damn good way to stop being thirsty. It's not the best beer in the world, but by far the best beer I can get anywhere.

Hopefully it's not a mistake to post this online, but it was at the restaurant by the mall in Braintree, just south of Boston. Braintree, the town where the Brinks money might still be buried.

I watched this whole thing... it could be a total put on, but he seemed like a pretty awesome guy. Came across as caring about beer, about wanting to really promote great beers in America and in wanting to be generous to his friends and colleagues.

Also, if I owned a brewery I would be 500 lbs and drunk off my ass all the time. I don't know how he manages to form sentances and be so thin.

That's what I always wondered. I have a hard enough time forming sentences and staying a svelt 250 lbs and I have to pay for my beer.

You know, I don't think I've ever heard a bad thing about the guy. From anything I've ever heard or read about the guy he really does care about making great beer.

A few weeks ago here in NJ they had craft brewery festival attended by a number of local brewers. I was talking to one of them who had nothing but nice things to say about Jim Koch. I forget the specifics, but it was something about the hop shortage a few years ago, and how Koch used his buying power to buy up every hop he could, and then he resold them to small craft brewers at cost so they could stay afloat. This brewer credited Koch with having saved craft brewing in America.

I wish that I liked beer so that I could explore the various microbrews. Unfortunately, I cannot get past the bitter taste of the hops. The only beer that I do enjoy is Lambic: raspberry and cherry are AWESOME; the peach and sour apple aren't bad, either. Sadly there are no stores here in Pierre that sell it. I have to drive in to Rapid City on Monday for a doctor's appointment; I fully intend to stop by the liquor store and acquiring a few bottles for New Years. I also need one to make a berry jelly... I use it in the berry reduction and plan to can some for Christmas presents this year.

I work in the brewing industry, and BBC is one of our main competitors. I have a good friend who works in their corporate QC/R+D division. This friend says that Jim loves to get really drunk, and he often carries around dehydrated yeast which he eats by the spoonful because he thinks it will help him metabolize the alcohol that he is drinking.

Interested in good beer? Yes. Has basic knowledge of yeast (or human) metabolism? No.

I've tried a few varieties of Sam Adams beers, and I just can't get into them. They're like the gateway beverages that start your descent into a lifetime of debilitating beer snobbery. Oh sure, everybody does it- hell, you could probably drink two, maybe even three Boston Lagers without getting hooked. But then you start trying to fit in, discussing the nuances of seasonal varieties and pretending to mock "lite" beer drinkers (while thinking sadly of the remainder of that six-pack of Coors Lite Gold you were thinking of tossing back after mowing the lawn next weekend). And before you know it, you're into the hard stuff: locavore mini-micros with names that sound like they were ripped off from lines in the J. Peterman catalog, single-run "re-vintage" brands in original swing-top bottles culled from mountains of brown-glass refuse in stinking recycling yards, brews resurrected from historically accurate recipes translated from Sumerian cuneiform tables ("Where DO they get the aged Upper-Nile crocodile dung?" you ask your fellow microbrew junkies). Hell, there's an entire case of beer in your fridge that you bought just because YOU got the joke in the name and your douchey snobster friends didn't. Then one day, you wake up in your living room, lips still wrapped around an anatomically correct "neck" of a bottle of "Big Black Bubba's Politically Incorrect Ale" and wonder "what happened?" and "how did it come to this?" And then you remember- The Boston Lager. It was the Boston Lager.

I love Boston Lager. I keep forgetting to drink it, opting for other things, but when I have it again I realize how great it is. I will never get sick of it. My biggest knock on BBC is also what I give them credit for: they churn out all these varieties that serve as a great entry point for the uninitiated. For example, they had one called "Bonfire Beer" which was a rauchbier. Smokey flavor. As rauchbiers go, it was "meh." But a friend of mine who is a bud light kind of guy suddenly was interested in trying other rauchbiers. Same thing happened with the saison they put out a while back. Another friend suddenly opened up to trying all sorts of funky yeast beers he never would have. So while I think their specialty brews are tame and reserved when compared to the standards out there, they do the wonderful work of drawing people into trying things they wouldn't have.

They're not. Koch Brothers (pronounced like Coke) own Koch Industries, which is mostly natural gas, refining equipment, pipelines, fertilizer, paper goods (Georgia Pacific), and consumer goods (Invista, formerly a division of DuPont). They're the sons of Fred Koch.

Jim Koch (pronounced like 'Cook') isn't related to any of them. As far as I can tell Jim Koch stays out of politics. The biggest controversy associated with Sam Adams Brewers is that they refer to their Cranberry beer as a Lambic, even though it's obviously not from that region or brewed in that method, and doesn't really taste like one.

As far as real beer goes, Sam Adams is just so-so. I've only had 4-5 of their offerings, but they never really gave me a reason to try. The summer beer is terrible, I felt like I should have been squeezing it over some fish or something. The only thing I ever even liked was the Chocolate Bock, at like $12/bottle.

If you havent ventured any further than Sam Adams seasonals, you owe it to yourself to drink some real beer.

Well you gotta give Sam Adams credit, when piss beer is the only other option on the menu (many restaurants around here), it counts as a passable beverage for sipping.

My goodness, madam, you are missing out on such beautiful things! If you enjoyed cherry in your beer, Sam Adams makes a cherry hefeweizen that tastes like cherry 7-Up.

I got an ex girlfriend in your situation into beer with some stuff called Raspberry Brown. Its not bitter or anything, goes down super smooth, and even sneaks in a bit more alcohol than average IIRC.

Sam Adams isnt just the largest craft brewery, they are the largest American owned brewery. Followed by Sierra Nevada and Yuengling.

Leines has been phoning it in the past few years, their new brews have been mediocre to bad. Since the meger, blue moon seems to be the favorite craft brew child. More on topic though, i like their shandy better than Sam Adams new one, i was kinda dissapointed with that.

I haven't really tried much of their newer stuff, the Honey Weiss is the most recent of theirs that I've tried and that's been around for what? 10 years or so? I've been trying some of the stuff by Point Brewery, but so far the 2012 Black Ale and one of their other brews that I can't recall the name of just aren't really to my taste. Sadly I live in an area where we don't get here outside the major national brands that aren't somewhat local. I mean yeah the liquor stores carry more of the smaller brewery and imported stuff, but they charge an arm and a leg for it.

Best part is it's like Wonka. You go to the brewery, they walk you through the operations, and then you end up in a cooler with cases of different varieties stacked all around you. An employee with a dolly asks you to pick which ones you want and then wheels them out to your car. Typically I'll get 4 cases of different variety packs, that way I end up with a decent amount of Boston Lager (a part of most their variety packs) and 9-12 other styles.

Partly because California changed their laws more quickly than the rest of the US did with regulations concerning brew pubs. But Maytag was a hero for keeping them around. And yes, their common beer is damn fine.

I work part time in a craft beer store. (Cheap beer, and it gets me out of my home office. Life is good.). Few weeks back we notice a guy fiddiling with our displays. It's Jim Koch. He's in town, had noticed we had ordered some Utopias, and decided to check us out. Noticed that some of our six packs were a few months away from not being fresh enough, so he buys them off us to make sure the beer we sell of his is fresh. Then shares some drinks with us and has a good time.

Man loves beer, and is about as down to earth as you can imagine. Can't say enough good things about him.

So what? The part of the brewer's association definition they got changed was based on production levels, and is not even an actual law. Who cares how much beer a brewery makes as long as it tastes good. Do you really think only small brewers can make good (or alternatively that all small brewers make good beer)? If you do think that then maybe you need to try more beer.

It is possible. I have a condition called Sjogren's which makes strong flavors almost painful. There are times that I cannot even eat chocolate because it burns my tongue. Sweets tend to go down easier. I miss the sour rope candy tho :(

Sam Adams is the shiat. Generally speaking their 12 pack for $10.99 makes me very happy. In fact, I would say that their seasonal variety packs have inspired me to become a beer enthusiast and homebrewer. My coffee porter rocks.

It is possible. I have a condition called Sjogren's which makes strong flavors almost painful. There are times that I cannot even eat chocolate because it burns my tongue. Sweets tend to go down easier. I miss the sour rope candy tho :(


All those Lambics you mention are how I break the beer ice with folks, particualry women, not to sound sexist or anything. But, I've turned many a beer hating woman, including the one that became my wife in to beer enthusists by saying " there are some 40,000 different kinds of beers on this planet, there is something for everyone, here, try this. " and them a Liebermans frambois and wait for the MIND BLOWN!! look to come across thier faces.

makes good sorbet as well. ;)
a bottle of your favorite lambic, a simple syrup 1 to 1 ratio, 3/4c to 3/4 sugar. you gotta boil the syrup for about 2-3 minutes, other wise it's just sugar water..
about a tablespoon of lemon juice.. chill to under 40 degrees F and then churn for about an hour.



as for Sam Adams and Jim Koch? I hope to see him again at the next Craft brewers conference.. nice guy.
the beer itself I personaly find kinda "pedestrian" but I don't consider that an insult in the slightest.. its good, decent honest beer that is great for getting folks off the budwieser teat and introduce them to a world of better beer.

Its of my opinion that a brewery needs to make a good, honest, everyday drinkable beer. you Can base your business model around big and brash "artisinal" beers.and it does work for some people.

one should have a meal before they have desert y'know?

Yeah, it seems to me that ole Jim rose to the top by the old "oldest brewery" when they upgraded to a modern facility. Olways feels deceptive to me.

The beer is ok amongst the short beer menu in most establishments though.

truth be known... BBC and SA, during, and currently achieved national promence by contract brewing via miller. the big plant in boston is for regional support, and making all the seasonal beers. but, to this da, if you aint on the east coast, more than likely your boston lager was made in a miller plant alongside the high life...

that's nothing against BBC. its how things are done. if anything, is speaks volumes of the ability of macro plants to make good / decent beer.

they can do anything, its just a matter of economy to scale. the big guys hire the best brewers in the world, and pay them the best money

it doesn't matter that the brew tower looks like a friggen air traffic control tower when you are pumping around several Hectaliters of beer around everyday... you need a certain level of automation.
hell .. the place I work for is producing 15,000 bbks a year now and we are ALWAYS trying to automate and stream line the process,

regardless, for every extra thousand bbls of production we achieve, we need to hire at least one more brewer/cellarman to the operation. we could install a automatic keg cleaning / racking system... but at our scale... its still faster and more efficient to clean and keg by hand

bottles of course, are a completely different matter. I started out at the place as a production bottler... a four head manual champagne filler. took an hour to make six cases of 12 22oz bottles..

the day I retired that machine was one of the happiest days of my life.

the attachment to brewing? sam adams dad and grand dad were maltsters.. the made malt.. that was usedin brewing, to make ber,
Mr, adams concern in brewing was accomdemic.. he invested in breweries that purchased the families malted barely...that was tunred into beer, and nvested in some breweries that used the malt produced.
Sam adams himself was an extremely tee totaling abolitionist..

odd..

i know I typed that in the past.. and I own that, and it's mostly stolen from Garret Oliver .but I did not type that in this thread.. regardless of my name being attached to the post.. I did not type that earlier.. . I had shut down the lap top and was in smooze mode with a visiting bar manager... I had only had three beers at that point and that post is me ten beers in around 1am typing...
