Is it still standing your ground if you're sitting in a wheelchair?

Hunnicutt is married, and her husband was on the road for his job with a dental lab company when the shooting happened, Jones said.

Holy fark. Typically they don't release names until loved ones are notified, I feel for the guy.

This doesn't add up.

When police arrived, Hunnicutt was in cardiac arrest and officers began performing CPR.

The suspect, Frank Louis Reeves, was apprehended in the gas station parking lot. He was being held on a murder charge at the Bibb County Jail

So the woman died of a heart attack, yet it's the wheelchair guy's fault??

65 year old women tend to go into cardiac arrest when you shoot them.

Local paper's follow-up story:

"He kept saying, 'I shot her because she tried to hit me with her car,' " Whisby recalled. "And he never changed expression. I mean, it was just cold and, you know, he was just like he was discussing the weather. ... Something had to be wrong with him."

You see Timmy, when all your blood drains out of the bullet hole some guy in a wheelchair puts in you, your heart stops beating. The guy who shot you is generally considered to be at fault.

But at some point, the person becomes incompetent to properly wield the weapon. I fear that despite how terrible this incident was, we won't truly address the real issue: old people get incompetent and we don't do anything about it.

Who cares what she died from: she's obviously a bad farking driver, careless as shiat, and not watching out for people in wheelchairs. She got exactly what she deserved. Exactly. Spot on.

She has no excuse. Zero. farking. Excuse. I don't care if the guy was turning wheelies in the parking lot, he's in a chair, so he's not moving quickly, and she should have seen him and approached (if at farking all) with caution. She failed. Hard.

As a pedestrian I support the guy- drivers are inconsiderate and careless in an extreme. I've been hit four times in the past year where I live in Houston. Police got one guy (that looks like Richard Dryfus no less). People don't stop, they're not observant, and they think because they're in the car they have the right of way. They're just oh so farking busy so please excuse the shiat out of them and their little personal emergency which could cost you your life.

People often biatch about bicyclists, and I agree with that, but shiat like this is the same thing: people in cars not paying attention. It's the same as if the guy pulled out a gun and pointed at her then started firing. It's just as dangerous, and it's a valid analogy: bullet/car, both will kill if not properly utilized; attention is required. Take a 6000lb vehicle and approach a 200lb pedestrian- people, without armor, are a bit farking vulnerable. But farking morons in their landbarges don't care- they're in just such a hurry, fark everyone else.

Well god damn, good on him for popping her. Good on him. I hope he bought a beer before the cops showed up. shiat, if he goes to jail I'll send him some money for his account.

The problem is that driving is too easy: automatic transmissions, yellow lines, signs and lights to tell you what to do. Fischer farking Price couldn't have made an easier system for driving a 3 ton automobile. You farks never realize how many lives you place at risk.

If it were up to me cars would have collision detectors that would stop the car and electrocute the driver for several seconds in such an instance. You farking morons with your cars, always in a hurry, ignoring everyone else in the world.

As cars and trucks rolled in and out of the Murphy Express on Gray Highway on Tuesday, there came a man in an electric wheelchair tooling across the lot, skirting the line at the pumps.

Maybe 40 feet from the gas plaza, the woman in the Buick hit the brakes.

Within minutes, she would be dead.

Of course, it would be different if he were a cop...
Police on the West Side shot and critically injured a man who tried to run over an officer with a car in the Lawndale neighborhood Sunday night, authorities said.
... or...
[Police spokesman] Lack said the driver struck one of the police vehicles attempting to box him in and aggressively backed up, almost striking a police officer, who had approached the minivan on foot.
At that time, Lack said "an officer fearing that his fellow officer may be run over fires a single shot, striking the subject in the leg."

So order DirectTV and don't end up dead in a gas station with a bullet hole from a guy in a motorized wheelchair.

2012-12-06 12:16:47 AM
This whole thing sounds like a mess.

You have an old lady, who may well not have seen an old man in a motorized wheelchair, which are very difficult to see when they're rolling around in parking lots. Really, they do not belong anywhere near where a car is. She doesn't seem like the kind of person who would have either deliberately or accidentally struck a person in a wheelchair.

You have an old man, who by all accounts is not doing too well upstairs--evidently he'd had at least one stroke and was displaying erratic behavior according to neighbors and family. He should not have had access to a gun, and probably shouldn't have been running around the neighborhood alone. Certainly he shouldn't have been in a PARKING LOT in a motorized wheelchair, since evidently he didn't realize nobody could see him.

The old lady thinks she hit an old man in a wheelchair; she gets out to see if he's okay; he deliberately bangs into her car with his chair and pulls his gun. To scare her, he says later, but then somehow--deliberately? accidentally? he does have a paralyzed arm--shoots her full in the chest.

However this shakes out, nobody wins here.

A long time friend of mine knew this victim through direct family.

Imagine my morning when I woke up and had a Facebook message, and this was the first thing I read that day:

my mother's first cousin was murdered in macon, shot in the chest, just getting out of her card. everything i was complaining about today just didn't seem so important when I found this out.

By the way, http://www.macon.com has more to this than the AJC. I know that's a bit unusual, given the reputation of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, but, well, Macon Telegraph is local, so they have a better perspective and a bit more information, at least they are trying. Telegraph has a professional reputation in its own right. Gray is Macon's next-door neighbor, right after Milledgeville.

2012-12-06 12:22:22 AM
Oh and the AJC got it wrong, it wasn't Macon, it was Gray. Which as I already mentioned is next door to Macon. Basically if you drive to Macon through Milledgeville and pick up through Highway ... 212, I believe? You go through Gray. It's a smaller town, about 2/3rds the size of Columbus, Georgia.

Cardiac arrest just means the heart had stopped, not WHY it stopped. Maybe she had a heart attack. Maybe half of her heart was blown away by a bullet. Maybe it stopped becuase of excessive blood loss. Either way, her heart stopped becuase she was shot, that is murder.

Except when a cop uses a taser on someone or even shoots them and the result is cardiac arrest and they die then it's just 'natural causes' a coincidence it happened when they got tased or shot or beaten or whatever. Yeah I know double standards, but that may be what was being referred to.

old people need supervision, removal from their homes, medical attention, loss of driving privileges and protection from those who will prey upon them for profit. sadly few receive these services. we also tend to not provide ample support for the homeless, the mentally ill, veterans, people dependent on drugs/alcohol and so many other groups of people. we also allow any moran to reproduce. mankind/society is a great big pot of failure. voting isn't going to change that. voting is bullshiat, it is lip service to appease the masses. only the most wealthy and powerful have any true influence, the bulk of us merely provide labor or suckle at the great teat. politicians are bought and paid for, liars who lie, and they rarely live up to their campaign promises. the bulk of the population is nothing and their vote means nothing.

Fiction Fan: A long time friend of mine knew this victim through direct family.

Damn reading the personal details of her life has made it worse :(

And I do not doubt that reading the personal details of the shooters life will make me feel ever crappier. :( :(

As Gyrfalcon said, "Nobody wins here."

She was probably too old too be driving (I work in a drive through bottle-o I know bad some old drivers can be, totally fine in straight lines, but any sort of abnormality takes too long for them to respond too), he should have been in a veterans nursing home, enjoying his days being fed, recounting old war stories and watching tv.

On the other hand I've seen all too many people in wheelchairs who think it gives them an absolute right of way. The worst example was back in college, she was capable of controlling her chair properly (when faced with an immovable object she would correctly steer around it) but she utterly didn't care who or what her chair hit. If you were in her way she would simply run you down. (At least until she learned that if it wasn't convenient for me to get out of the way and she could go around I would set my foot at an angle--my feet are big enough that her front wheels couldn't climb over if I did it right and the force would compress my shoe, not my foot. She would be brought to a halt and I wouldn't be hurt.)

A gas station is likely to have plenty of things for a chair to be hiding behind, both sides have to be alert in such maneuvering. It could very well be that he pulled out too close for her to react. His conduct certainly shows he's got some screws loose--even if it was deliberate the threat was obviously gone at the point she got out of the car.

As a pedestrian I support the guy- drivers are inconsiderate and careless in an extreme. I've been hit four times in the past year where I live in Houston.

That makes it pretty clear it's your fault.

To that I say F U.

I own a car and drive a lot (live in LA) but for three years I had to walk or take public transit before I got my wheels. I speak from both perspectives (as a pedestrian and as a motorist).

On one hand drivers should be more aware of their surroundings and watch out for people and NOT get impatient when people need to cross the road. It IS very hard to see out of your car sometimes, especially with bigger vehicles (I drive a used SUV) and especially at night.

On the other hand, pedestrians should realize they are stepping into a sea of fast-moving two-ton machines and should keep an eye out too. There are times, like when a driver is making a turn and watching oncoming traffic, that the driver will not pay attention to the pedestrian crossing the street. I've had a couple near-misses when I forgot to make eye-contact with oncoming drivers. Whenever I am out and about, I NEVER cross the street/walk through a parking lot unless I am SURE the driver can see me. If they don't make eye-contact with me, then I don't cross.

Simillarly, if I'm driving I always slow down and look both ways when making turns, 'cause sometimes those kids coming from/going to school will rush through the cross walk and they can be difficult to stop for.

I know you're already a sick bstrd for celebrating the fact that she got shot, but the fact is the guy in the wheelchair should be equally responsible for his safety when moving through a place that cars frequent.

2012-12-06 02:39:16 AM
This idea that "drivers should pay more attention blah blah blah" misses the point that people in wheelchairs are often below the eye level of most cars, and especially SUVs and mommy vans. Even a driver paying strict attention to everything may not see someone in a wheelchair no matter how carefully they're driving--nevermind the fact that in a parking lot people's brains seem to leak out the bottom of their skulls.

Yes, drivers should pay attention--BUT pedestrians, and especially people in wheelchairs that are already below eye level, should assume that people in cars DON'T SEE THEM. They should just assume they've not been seen, and have NOT been given the right of way, and react accordingly. If you're in an electric wheelchair, don't go zooming around a parking lot as if you're in a car--you're not, and nobody sees you. Hell, it's easy enough to back into a full-size car's blind spot, you think a wheelchair has a chance? Even if the driver is being scrupulously cautious and looking over both shoulders?

It's just sad, the whole thing. And this idea we've gotten over the last 20 years or so that "It's my right to be/do wherever I want/whatever I want" is leading to more of this. Yeah, there are things you've got the right to do. You absolutely have the right to speed across a gas station parking lot in your motorized wheelchair. The guy is just lucky (or perhaps not) that he got bumped by an old lady in a car, and not an 18-wheeler heading for the interstate.

Let this be a hint to drivers that they should be more careful. There are pedestrians, wheelchairs, school kids, bicycles, blind people and motorcycles all over the place. Even in Atlanta.

Keep your goldarned wheelchair out of the pump bay. No business being there.

I cut through the pump bay on foot when the station's not busy; it's like jaywalking. But just because he wasn't supposed to be there doesn't mean she shouldn't have looked where she's going. Suppose it was a little girl putzing around while Mommy was paying? Would it be alright to run her over just because "Kids are supposed to be in the car!"?

There's this friend of a friend I generally like except when she's driving: she'll take important calls on her cell while driving and she can't multitask for shiat anymore. She'll weave around the lane like a drunk, nearly miss people merging, etc.; the last time I rode with her she almost collided with a pickup speeding to pass in the outer lane, so seeing a break in traffic I said "Oh! There's where I get out right there (pointing to bank)!" She zipped right over to the curb without looking or pausing her conversation; she didn't pull over normally, she suddenly appeared in the breakdown lane. The only way to be there quicker would have been to beam in. Suppose there was someone standing there waiting to jaywalk: would his breaking the rules for pedestrians excuse her inattention? I'd have had to testify under oath that it's not that she didn't see him step in front of her, it's that she didn't notice she was heading right for him standing there. There could have been a bus pulled over at a stop for all she knew. She somehow manages to drive all over the metro area every day without hurting herself or anyone else, it could be that my piping up broke the camel's back, but it would not surprise me if she killed somebody, and whether he had any business there might not matter at all.

"No business being there!" doesn't let drivers completely off the hook. Drivers who don't watch where they're going are a farking menace. And shooting them might be a public service.

Wheelchair users and car drivers both. And you don't have to have had two strokes or even be old to be an incompetent driver.

If I shoot you by accident were you wrong to be sitting there? Or should I have watched where I pointed the damn pistol, regardless of how competent you were? And if I wound you or even nearly miss, would it be horrible for you to break my jaw?

In this case it's not that he's totally blameless. But he did use his deadly weapon after she used hers -- the car. And it could be argued that someone who thinks slowly takes longer to do something that he should have stopped himself from doing: that it takes his brain 30 seconds to turn his body and fire, while it takes a normal person no time at all, might be the difference between murder and manslaughter.
And what's humane to do to a rolling antique who's already had two strokes? If you won't put him to sleep then put him in a locked ward and don't let him have a gun: he belongs in a nursing home anyway.

The streets are crawling, seething and oozing with people who shouldn't be there, or maybe anywhere. Voluntary euthanasia, even compulsory in some cases, is a necessary step.

EVERYONE dies of cardiac arrest. It's when your heart stops beating, not merely a heart attack.

If you're decapitated you don't. Since brain death would be the criteria for "death" if your head and body were separated.

Gyrfalcon: This idea that "drivers should pay more attention blah blah blah" misses the point that people in wheelchairs are often below the eye level of most cars, and especially SUVs and mommy vans. Sorry, man. But it is ultimately the responsibility of the driver to make sure nothing is in your way before proceeding. Exceptions can be made if something darts out in front of you, but if a wheelchair is slowly plodding out in front of you and you don't notice it, it's your fault, no exceptions. Not saying I disagree with you over the fact that pedestrians need to pay more attention too, but it's the driver's responsibility to watch out for others since the driver is the one operating a 4,000lb deadly weapon.

What race was the lady who got shot?

Shooter is black, victim is white. I can only imagine the outrage if things were reversed.
The crime in Macon has been escalating. It is becoming a "baby" Atlanta. Druggies, Thuggies, and trash walking the streets.
And the majority of the crime is committed by black people. Black racist career politicians are the majority leadership who does nothing but panders to the trash that supports them. Elaine Lucas, Sam Hart, Sanford Bishop, C. Jack Ellis, Henry Ficklin, Robert Brown....the list goes on.
From the things I have read, the victim got out of her car and walked to the back, the shooter approached her and was hitting the back of her car then he shot her. That doesn't sound like self defense and she definitely wasn't trying to run over him since she was out of the car when she was shot. He was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter if you can believe that. I've seen the shooter riding his wheelchair in the lane with traffic. This same street has the most traffic accidents and fatalities in the whole town. That side of town is gang infested with projects and ghettos. Macon is a horrible place.

Georgia is a red state but Macon is a blue town. That explains a lot of it.
