Since this holiday was originally a pagan celebration of the birth of the sun goddess Mirtha during the winter solstice, didn't Christianity do the hijacking?

Reminds me of something that happened in my hometown back when I was teenager. There was a family who had a lit up Menorah in the window. I believe they were the only Jewish family in the entire neighborhood. One day, someone threw a rock at their window and stole the Menorah. The poor family was distraught. The neighborhood responded by buying the family a new Menorah and putting Menorahs in their own windows right along with the Christmas tree, as if daring the little thief to try his luck again. He didn't.

I lived in a neighborhood where you never put out any holiday decorations one could reach without a ladder. Wasn't just nativity scenes - light bulbs, Santas, tinsel, wreaths, what have you would get swiped and smashed in the street. There were lots of teens there with nothing else to do.

The kids knew the local cops were more interested in manning speed traps and roadblocks than serving their community by just patrolling the streets so the brats they did what they wanted.

We moved away after a couple of years, but since all the kids in that neighborhood are grown up now, those elaborate displays are safe again.

Clearly one of you pedants did it because he got the Nativity all wrong. From the comments:

"Maybe it's a traditionalist who thinks the Baby Jesus isn't supposed to be placed in the creche until Midnight, Christmas, when tradition (not fact, you didacts) says He was born. Most "Christians" don't even know the 12 days of Christmas begin Christmas Day and last until Epiphany, yet after decorating starting Halloween, they rip down their decorations before New Year missing some of the great party days: Boxing, Fest of St Stephen, Circumcision of Our Lord (we serve cold-cuts, btw), and Twelfth Night. We still haven't celebrated St Nicholas' Day or St Lucy's Day yet. C'mon, folks: if your going to celebrate it, at least learn about it."

Yeah I was gonna say that. You don't put Jesus in the crib until Christmas day - or late Christmas eve. You're supposed to leave the wise men out too, until January 6th.

For some reason the rules don't seem to be as strict with the shepherds. Most people have them there from the start.

Catholic religion is based on a mistranslation. The Septuagint scholars mistranslated the Hebrew word for "young woman" into the Greek word for "virgin". It was an easy mistake to make because there was only a subtle difference in the spelling. So, they came up with a prophecy: "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear us a son."

You understand? It was "virgin" that caught people's attention. It's not everyday a virgin conceives and bears a son. But leave that for a couple of hundred years to stew and next thing you know you have the Holy Catholic Church.

Matthew 5:39 is part of Christian theology.

Joking aside, and it's not all Christians, just the ones that insist the government give them special treatment and privileges in violation of the 1st Amendment, and ones that want to rewrite the Constitution, like Mike Huckabee and his ilk.

If you want to blame anyone, blame the likes of Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson.

Yeah this makes sense. There wasn't much animosity toward Christians until the evangelical movement sprang up and tried to exert a lot influence in the public sphere.

What is happening is a push back against this movement.

Pat Robertson seems to me that he's starting to understand that present day evangelical movement is driving people away from the Christian faith. I think this understanding is more about his bottom line and less about people leaving the faith, but I am a cynic.

The Martians have kidnapped Santa Claus again? Shiat, this is getting embarassing.

Especially with all the money we pay to NORAD to keep track of the His Elfness.

Oh, well. If they don't get him back by Christmas this time, the children's letters to Santa Claus will heat Parliament for three months.

Santa Claus has his own Canadian postal code you know. It's in Montreal.

It's H0H 0H0. (Ho! Ho! Ho! Get it?)

Have the kids write a letter to Santa, at The North Pole, Canada, H0H 0H0 and see. They'll get an answer back if you post early.

Here's a simple mneumonic to remember the postal code of Parliament Hill: remember the word CHAOS.
The postal code is K1A 0A6. It's not perfect but the CH should remind you of the K1, the As are self explanatory, as is the 0, and the 6 (six) starts with S.

And the phrase "Chaos and Old Night" reminds you of the provincial code: ON, for Ontario

I didn't even read the article's comments, but was looking for this here. This is why the Baby J.C. and the manger aren't just fused together....

It's only a matter of time, though, before Nativity scenes will be out so early that Jesus will have a costume on Halloween

I don't have a dog in this fight, but when I was a kid, I was a real stickler for that, probably annoyingly so. I'd have the shepherds advancing step by step along the fireplace hearth.

Now I think I'd just see the whole tableau as a symbol for the day, which people like to look at all month, so why not enjoy the whole picture at once? It's just a representation of it, rather than a literal recreation.

brantgoose: The Martians have kidnapped Santa Claus again?

Wuh?

We bought some baby Jesuses from a dollar store a couple years ago, in different skin tones. I set them up on the mantel and decorated around them. I don't know why; it just seemed like a thing to do. Then I think maybe they fell and broke because I haven't seen them in awhile.

Since when does your right not to be offended override other people's rights to use their private property as they see fit?

I'm not in favor of nativity displays either, but committing crimes only gives these people to ramp up their preaching. Case in point, the victim of this crime had originally only been passively preaching via a plastic display in his yard that would be considered tacky if it were anything but the nativity. But thanks to the vandal, now he's got his Jesus-rant promoted on an international website. In that context, how much damage did the vandal really do to his preaching efforts?

If you want to get rid of a Christian, don't martyr them, just trivialize them. Before long, they'll just move on to someone else who will be more than happy to fulfill their desire to be persecuted.

I'm saying that Christians in the US, for whatever reason, are expected to turn the other cheek and absorb abuse and criticism more than any other religious group in the US.

This is something that seems new in the past 10 years or so.

I don't understand it.

Well, in the last 30 years or so, we have seen the rise of the Christian Right in this country. A politicized version of Christianity whose adherents seek "dominion" over the USA. The backlash you feel is the result of this politicization. Leave others alone whether you agree with their beliefs or actions and you will be left alone in return.  Try to use the power of the state to advance your religious pov and you're gonna get what we have today, a nasty backlash.

30 years? Try damned near 60. These people have been at it for a very long time. It started when a born again Presbyterian president was urged to change the Pledge of Allegiance to include "Under God" in 1954. Then, not satisfied with his and thus this country's piety, he changed the national motto, originally "E Pluribus Unum" to "In God We Trust" in 1956. His lust for dominion still unsated, he decided that our currency should be emblazoned with the term as well in 1957.

Since then, we have seen countless instances of those chucklefarking steeplechasers vandalizing our public buildings with religious paraphernalia, they've installed monument after monument towards their deity in our schools, our courthouses, our libraries, military bases, public parks, even our Capitol buildings at both the State and Federal level.

But that wasn't enough for them, no not enough at all. They've been a constant and unending impediment to social progress in this country since its founding. The abolition of slavery, Women's Suffrage, the Civil Rights movement, the ending of miscegenation laws, the integration of our schools and military, workforce equality for women, even up to today with marriage equality have ALL been viciously and doggedly attacked by practically every religious leader and congregation in this country as "Welcoming God's Wrath ," and "Arrogantly betraying God's Will."

Since they successfully established a foothold in the 50's, these people have been rampaging across the country. They've been bombing federal buildings, Women's Health Clinics, Night Clubs, even the Olympics. They've been assassinating doctors. They've been terrorizing fairly thoroughly a segment of our society that comprises roughly 1/8th the population in this country. And that's just the plebes, let alone what their politicians have been doing.

They encountered another boon to their cause when a born again Christian was elected to office in 2000. They managed to get him to pass Abstinence Only education, and when called on the fact that it wasn't as effective as they lauded it would be had the gall to tell us that the programs funded weren't effective because they weren't religious enough. Let alone the institutionalized rape laws, serious abrogation of women's health rights, attempts to brainwash our children in schools by teaching creationism, and in one case making it implicitly legal to bully kids into suicide in the name of Jesus, at the state level.

And to top it off, to put a cherry on top of all this, every time the people whose uvulas they've been rather ceremoniously rogering with Jesus' cock bite down a little bit for want of air these mouthbreathing, mono-synaptic, beady-eyed yokels hem and haw, biatch and moan, wail and whine and scream at the top of their lungs about "Religious Persecution."

It's about god damned time somebody started socking these farkers back.

We're all trying to understand ourselves and the world. So some people come up with a worldview you disagree with. When they aren't bothering you don't bother them. When they do bother you do what you want.

But to think that you can eradicate religion is ridiculous. Religious belief is an outgrowth of human frailty, fear of the unknown, and desire to understand the world.

If you try to outlaw religion you'd be creating a power structure thats an even bigger monster than the one you are trying to eradicate.

Personally I think most of the harm committed in this world is caused by male aggression from too much testosterone.

Religion colors and directs this inherent aggression but if not through religion, then nationalism, sports teams, political parties, skin color, etc will always provide justifications to people creating an us vs them view so they can kill one another.

You must have watched a different video than I did because the gentleman wasn't ranting at all. In fact he was just asking that the doll be returned because of sentimental value, plus he forgave the thief.

He wasn't ranting and yelling, saying that God would strike the thief down, that the thief would go to hell for stealing. Instead he put forth a message of love and kindness.

FTA: His message to whoever stole baby Jesus is clearly posted. It reads "Whoever stole baby Jesus, put him in your heart."

"I have nothing but love and forgiveness for the person that stole it. Like I put on my sign whoever stole it, put him in your heart where it belongs," Adams noted.

Again, how does vandalism further this goal?

As long as mainstream religion is in power, no guerrilla efforts will be successful. First, you have to eradicate the role of religion in the government itself, and only then can the "rights" of religions be gradually removed, until religion is little more than a passive tradition people carry on.

For an example of this, look at the fall of ancient Paganism. First, the government (starting with Constantine) rejected Paganism in favor of a new belief system. Then, after the government was fully purged of Paganism, Theodosius I delivered the final blow.

Similarly, if you want modern religion to fall, you have to first replace the government with a secular system of belief (which should happen within a few election cycles, given the advanced age of the congresscritters who promote theocracy and the overall decline of the republican party). Once that is done, it should be trivial to allow an interpretation of the first amendment that exempts any and all special privileges for organized religion, such as tax breaks and special placement on public property. From there, all but the tiniest of religions will crumble under their own weight, and the handful of holdouts will either eradicate one another in an effort to prove their on religion to be the last one standing, or they'll be so scattered and disorganized that they would be no more threatening to the development of humankind than a J.R.R Tolkien fanclub.
