Since it's Russia, I think it's safe to assume that in the vast majority of these, alcohol was involved.

Let's just say that very little ethanol makes its way into the gas tank.

So true.

CSB - I have a friend who was a factory manager in Moscow back in the 70's. He told me that the party boss would come once a month to "inspect the factory" and ensure that everything was in tip top condition and that they were making their quotas.

Naturally, nearly everything was always broken and there were no spare parts to fix anything... and even if you could, they never had enough raw materials, and what they got was usually so shiatty they had to throw half of it out, so while the boss was inspecting the factory he would always forget to lock the trunk of his car and a half dozen cases of vodka would mysteriously find their way in there. /CSB

IIRC, the guy with the bulldozer got his own greenlit thread.

WTF was going on with the low flying helicopter?

And the car that flips over at about 4:03 in? WTF??

I think I'd soil myself if I saw a jet flying straight towards me.

Probably still is, but in the 70s drunkenness was pervasive. And often desperate.

My friend's dad worked in some aerospace factory in Moscow. He said a coworker would at times put a can of rubber cement on a drill press with a large bit. When he lowered the spinning drill into the glue, the adhesive component wrapped itself around the bit, allowing him to extract a rubbery glob, leaving behind murky alcohol. Which he drank. I don't know what they made in that factory, but whatever it was eventually made its way into planes.

I would never get on a carnival ride in Russia.

I'm amazed at how many of those clips were of people driving on the wrong side of the road. Not just the people passing on a two lane road, but the highways with medians and the cars driving against the traffic or doing u-turns, what would possibly possess someone to do that.

Another thing I learned, power lines appear to just fall over sometimes in Russia.

2012-12-05 06:27:02 PM
So if 11:14 happened in say, Fouke Arkansas, generations of children would be hearing about the Ghost Woman of Boggy Creek that sometimes appears in the road looking for her missing titty hair.

All part and parcel of the New Russia, I guess.

That is why there's a new, growing crop of dash-cam videos featuring would-be face-beaters backing away to the shouts of "You're on camera, farker! I'm calling the cops!"

There was one later that showed some sort of truck with a pole sticking out that pulled down some other wires. Definitely a different incident but probably the same type of situation.

I'm fine with the Red Asphalt I just checked out. But I guess I'm partial to the retro style in Signal 30. The directness. The whole vibe like a father telling his son you're old enough to hear this now. Plus those cool 1950s cars.

I was motoring along (the) 405 one night, driving from San Clemente to a friend's place in Culver City.
Early evening, road construction, traffic's moving about 45 mph, and a wheel passes me on the right and turns into my lane. Just a wheel and a tire, trying to get home. It was one of the only times in my life were I reflexively said, " ... okay.... ".

I'm buying myself a RoadHawk for christmas, they record looped video whenever the car's on, they get power through a regular DC adapter, and they have a "save" button that earmarks the last 10 seconds of video (and the upcoming 10 seconds also), which isn't recorded over when the loop repeats. Check them out at:

It's pretty standard in Russia.  Many areas have little or no police coverage, plus there's an issue with corruption as well.  The videos can be used in court to show who was at fault in an accident.

Not just that, but insurance scams happen as well. One popular one (even in the US) is called the "swoop and stop".

A car will swoop in front of you and stop forcing you to rear-end them which without evidence to the contrary generally is accepted as your fault. Then they find a cooperative doctor, claim injuries and your insurance gets to pay them.

I had a guy try the opposite with me a while back. Asshat in a 3 ton utility truck comes roaring up behind me, gets within an inch of my rear bumper and then slams on his brakes, honking and waving his arms around like I cut him off. He failed to notice the state trooper in the lane right next to him, who had a perfect view of the whole thing.

RobertBruce: Kevin72: rebelyell2006: They need to play these sorts of videos at Drivers Ed here in America. Show how not to do things: driving too fast, passing when it is not safe, not checking the car to make sure the wheels and tires are firmly attached, driving while drunk, jumping out of moving vehicles...

That's a good compromise. I forgot the name, Code 30 or something that they used to show that had actual gruesomes and some snowflakes would be too grossed out.

red asphalt.

There were a bunch of those. The Ohio State Highway patrol alone was responsible for "Mechanized Death," "Wheels of Tragedy," and "Highways of Agony," the latter of which we watched in our HS driver's ed course along with "Exit 13" and "Red Asphalt."

A lot of Signal 30 was filmed on Route 30 ... right by where I grew up. The officer in the beginning mentions Trimble Road and the highway ... that's like 10 miles away ... I know ... CSB

"Can anyone recommend a good dashcam? I'm thinking of getting one."

Do a search on eBay for "dashcam". Lots of cheap stuff. Reviews are decent for some of them.

I slow way down before I pass a car that has stopped in the road "for no reason".
