Is there really anything they can do by actually being in session? This whole thing is just a negotiation between Boehner and Obama and they don't have to be in session to make progress on that.

Not saying they're not a bunch of privileged cocksuckers, but hold your horses.

If I am not mistaken, all it takes to keep the House in session is for one Congresscritter to stop by every day and bang the gavel a couple of times.

I have as much contempt for congress as the next guy, but I have to agree. The committees need to do their thing too. Can't do that in session.

That's the Senate. But it wouldn't surprise me. If they keep it up, they can kiss the filibuster good-bye.

To be honest, the less congress is in session, generally speaking, the better. I mean, it's not like 2X the time in session is equal to 2X the number of intelligent laws.... Probably, it's an inverse relation.

As regards the fiscal cliff, my feeling is that the more these clowns are out of DC and away from reporters, the less chance they have to make stupid statement that their egos won't let them back down from. Better that when they get back into town there's a reasonable deal hammered out that either they vote for, or they don't get nominated by the party in 2016.

My rep used to come back to his home state and actually talk with constituents about problems they had and other issues when congress wasn't in session, so he could vote and legislate intelligently.

But, probably he was an exception. He usually didn't have a serious opponent, so he didn't have to sell himself to donors. Elections weren't the expensive circus they used to be.

Yeah but Boehner might not even have enough GOP votes to pass it. Pelosi is talking about trying to make another coalition around Boehner.

If Boehner can't even guarantee Republican votes (which in the past he has shown he can't) why the hell is he even the their leader?

I'm thinking sometime, in the middle of March, as Boehner is giving a speech to the House, there will be a loud commotion in the aisles. Cantor, Goehmert and Bachmann will emerge, moving as one, with determination, toward the lectern. The security footage will be blurry, but the steely glint of knives drawn will be clearly visible. The video will spread like wildfire... John Boehner, falling to the floor, looking with shocked disbelief at the blood weltering from many mortal wounds. His final words will not be audible, but they will be clearly visible on his lips as he stares, dying, at his supposed second-in-command... "Et tu, derper?"

Obama should go re-read the Constitution, Article II, Section 3:

He shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the state of the union, and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in case of disagreement between them, with respect to the time of adjournment, he may adjourn them to such time as he shall think proper; he shall receive ambassadors and other public ministers; he shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed, and shall commission all the officers of the United States.

Anyone else here want to see Obama walk into the Capitol and order Congress to get back to work?

Didn't bohner say this morning that the rich will be paying more in taxes? Looks like he already decided that the Tea party is going under the bus.

That's what I thought.

I am not religious but I think hiring an Atheist to lead a church would be stupid. Why would you vote for someone who thinks government is always a failure? Why would you hire someone who doesn't believe they could even succeed in what their job is?

Bohner has no say in the matter. Fiscal cliff remember. He also said he want those increased taxes from closing loop hole. He said nothing new this morning.

As someone in a management role there are times where an emergency is occurring and some of my team members are in the office working long hours to resolve the issue. Sometimes in these situations there is nothing that I personally need to do so my presence is not technically necessary. Even though there's nothing I need to or even can do in some of these situations, I still stay there with the rest of the team until the crisis is over. Showing solidarity and sacrificing my evening or weekend right there alongside the other people on my team demonstrates respect and sharing in their sacrifice helps with morale and team cohesion. Calling in from the golf course to ask how is is going once or twice over the weekend while everyone else works would do the opposite.

Congresspeople are in effect the managers or team leaders of the American people. To not make the even the symbolic gesture of staying in session while an emergency situation is occurring that has the potential to screw us all in various ways is a disrespectful dick move. Demonstrating that their time off is more important than the crisis at hand is a big middle finger to the people they were elected to serve.

Yah but that doesn't get anything done. It doesn't matter if they're "in session" if everyone except the designated gavel banger is gone.

It's like a slow-motion demonstration of their ideal of the failure of government.
