These two were my definite favorites...

13. Curiosity control room
lh4.googleusercontent.com

I was watching the web feed live, and I pretty much jumped out of my chair and shouted "WOOHOOO!" as well. :D

14. Surface of Mars from Curiosity's POV
lh6.googleusercontent.com

A lot of people seem to look at Mars and think, "meh, it's just a bunch of rocks and sand", but I'm not ashamed to say that I think that planet is gorgeous. And, that we human things have managed to land a one-ton nuclear powered mobile chemistry lab and camera platform on another planet -- AND IT WORKS! -- is pretty awe-inspiring, too. :)

Those are powerful images alright - powerful reminders of how craven, hateful, and selfish we humans can be. If humanity had any sense of decency, we'd look on most of these images and be ashamed of ourselves.

Nogale: I don't buy the caption for #33. Based on the position of the kid and the soldier, and the expression on his face, I don't believe she was really trying to punch him.

Actually that photo was staged and the girls father is a senior person in the organization Popular Resistance. This was just another incident when the Media got scammed by Palestinians staging photos, and this was not the first or last time

Wacth these videos (first is the confrontation with commentary and the second is the entire incident unedited)

Good for you that you buy a staged photo, though they did

A lot of the pictures made me sad, but that's the one that actually made me tear up. I guess I have screwed up priorities

Popcorn Johnny: Mog32Kupo: If I recall that is a pic of a dog with major issues physically so his owner brings him out in the water to relax him and let him get to sleep

Not saying it's not a touching photo, but in the end, it's a dog.

Who among us has not wanted to do this at least once?

Way back in 1973 an exuberant 11 year old version of myself snuck up behind Mickey Mouse at Disneyland in Anaheim and proceeded to lift his head off by pulling on the ears.

He was somewhat pissed off until he saw it was just a kid drunk on the excitement of being at Disneyland.

I think at first he thought he was being attacked. I wonder what would happen if a kid tried a stunt like that today?

soporific: Am I the only one who realizes that there could be some pretty important pictures taken this month? They do realize that things do happen in December, right? History doesn't just take the month off.

This is why I hate year-end lists because they come out before the year is over. I get why it happens, lazy journalists, but what's so wrong about waiting until the end of December?

Well it takes time to compile lists and pictures. It's not like we live in an age of instant information and file shari... oh, wait...

I must be desensitized to this kind of stuff. I look at the Police Photos, at the mother on her sons grave, at all of it. And all I get out of it is the same sinking feeling that we, as humans, will destroy ourselves he we don't learn to love each other more.
