And apparently some of his best sequences were improv. Its really hard to hate the guy, but damnit all to hell if farkers who hadn't even seen 21 jump street didn't try. Those threads were awful, but they enlightened me to which people criticize without ever having seen said movies.

He manages to play a great douchebag in the way Courtney Love managed to play a great drug addict trainwreck in People Vs. Larry Flynt, or the way that Jack Nicholson plays a great Jack Nicholson in every Jack Nicholson movie.

Subby, I actually disagree. Back when he got started, watching him act was like watching a block of wood talk. He has taken acting classes and taken it seriously. Will he ever be Ryan Gosling? Doubt it. But he has definitely improved to where you don't just write him off. Besides, Brad Pitt was kind of just a pretty boy too and he has really honed his craft. 21 Jump Street was a good example as is Magic Mike. For a chick flick, The Vow didn't make me want to blow my brains out and he was fairly decent in that. I dunno, not being all defensive about it. I actually used to roll my eyes every time I saw him and wondered how he kept getting work. It's nice to see people step up and try and do better and be taken a bit more serious.

He was brutal in 21 Jump Street (but, to be fair, so was everyone else). He has gotten better though, but he started off at -10/10, so he's got a long hole to climb out of.

That scene + the music scene. Yup I will look past most if not all of previous film projects because of that.

I swear 21 Jump Street must not have had a script, the director probably just told the actors to wing it.

So much this. I was shocked at how funny it was.

LegacyDL: I swear 21 Jump Street must not have had a script, the director probably just told the actors to wing it.

From what I understand, it really didn't. They ad-libbed a good portion of the movie, to the point they'd brainstorm the night before shooting and see how many jokes they could add to the script. At some point, the script became a skeleton to their hi-jinx for the movie and as long as they kept the plot intact, they were given lots of room to work with.

He's better than people give him credit for.

He did a good job in Haywire and the scene in 21 Jump Street where he is stoned in the music room was ad-libbed* and done in one take.

* It was in the script that he act stoned but the director apparently just let him go at it.

Again, I disagree. And I like Gina Carano. I think she's gorgeous, great fighter, the works. But the fight scenes in Haywire were odd, kinda stilted. A lot of them looked like they didn't bother to get a good stunt double to fight against her, so she's having to pose and wait for the other guy to throw his punch. As an actress, I wish she'd started smaller; done some more bit parts, worked with more directors, gotten a better sense of what she's doing rather than being straightaway shoved into a leading role. She's nice, she's pretty, but she's not up to acting opposite Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas.

Using 'real people' is a thing that Steven Soderbergh (the director) likes to do ... like when he cast Sasha Grey (the porn star) as a high end hooker for The Girlfriend Experience. Yes this ends up with 'actors' that do not have the experience to put out deep, flawless performances. But, that said, he is pretty good at getting good performances out of them and I think Gina held her own just fine.

As for the fights ... well let's just say you and I see this very differently. This film had one of the best fight coordinators in the business: J.J. Perry. He builds a full, detailed set mock-up in the training gym. The actors and stuntmen use this to work out every minute detail of the choreography of a fight for weeks leading up to the shoot.

Combine that with using actors like Gina who can throw a punch, take a punch, accurately apply holds/use leverage/etc. and you end up with a fight scene with realistic action and long takes (none of this rapid cut crap that they use in most modern action movies to hide the fact that the actors are clueless about fighting).

Last year I spent some time in training in Saint Francisville LA. The hotel I was in was me, a bunch of highway foremen, and.. the movie crew of GI JOE 2. I was warned about this by the hotel owner, who I knew, and he asked me to leave them be, so I did. The actors were apparently staying in Baton Rouge, and the crew looked like nice folk but tired as all hell.
Point of this. I was outside walking to the hotel office and Boring McBuffStud walks by me with only a towel around his waist, coming back from the pool. I eyed him a bit and carried on, he stopped and gave me a wtf look. The roadcrew foreman saw all of this, and when I came back informed me I had walked right by Tatum Channing's half naked ass with narry a care.
I had no idea who he was. Foreman loaned me the first GI JOE and Step Up. I still had no idea.

Fast forward to this year and some coworkers are fangirling over his boring ass, and I told them the above. They were flabbergasted. One told me I am an old soul.

Whatever. Give me Robert Downey JR and Tom Hiddleston anyday.

Oh hey proof I'm bored by this guy: I got his name backwards. Go me.

cryinoutloud: WTF kind of a name is "Channing?" Like Tatum isn't farked up enough. Tatum Channing--yup, it works just as well the other way. I hate your name, dude.

Never trust a man with two first names.

Apparently you haven't seen the movie. That's the line that is spoken in that scene.

He says isotope. Watch it again.

Shazam999: redmid17: Shazam999: No, 21 Jump Street the movie farking sucked. No plot to speak of, Jonah Hill can't carry a movie at all, and they killed Johnny Depp and Peter DeLouise's characters.

I imagine you're quite a blast at parties. There's always that one guy who doesn't like a overachieving, funny movie. I bet you hated "The Other Guys" too.

Damn, who knew there were so many Tatum fans.

Difference between being a Channing Tatum fan and liking funny movies.

It wasn't _that_ funny. It was mediocre at best. And Jonah Hill was plain just awful in it.

But hey, if you like it, good for you. I don't really care what you like.

It was funnier than most comedies that come out and was really funnier than it had any right to be. Like I said, if you think it's mediocre, you must be a blast at parties.

Do you know what "mediocre" means? It means AVERAGE. MIDDLE. That's what it was. And yeah, it was a letdown, because there was virtually no plot, they just filled in time with Jonah farking Hill "ad-libbing" (guy can't adlib to save his life, Christ almighty if those were the best takes the guy needs to try waaay harder), and why the hell did they call it "21 Jump Street" when it really had nothing at all in common with the TV show in respect to tone?

Yes. Better than most comedies means better than average, hence not mediocre. Glad we could clear that up chief.

See, the difference between you and me is that I have my own baseline of "funny" and "good", and if 90% of, say, comedies, that come out don't meet that expectation, then I don't consider them good. Whereas you seem to take the pile of crap that Hollywood spews out and pick out the semi-polished turd and say "Yeah, that made laugh two times more than that other movie, it's good!".

Yes I clearly enjoy pile of crap movies. There's a reason why critics and the vast majority of people liked the movie. You sound like a pretentious film major. 21 Jump Street wasn't great cinema, but it was entertaining for the majority of the movie and made me laugh. You just take movies like this way too seriously. You probably don't like Mel Brooks movies or Animal House either.

They do it several times, but this is probably the one you're talking about:

Deputy Chief Hardy: We're reviving a canceled undercover project from the '80s and revamping it for modern times. The people behind this lack creativity and they've run out of ideas, so what they do now is just recycle shiat from the past and hope that nobody will notice.

That was my favorite as well, making fun of remakes, while being in a remake...Gold

That was great, but not as good as the HFS drug side effects vignette. The science class scene, band scene, with Rob Riggle chewing them out, and then the icing on the cake, the baton race. Straight up laughed my ass off.

I'm another who was VERY surprised how much I enjoyed 21 Jumpstreet. I avoid Johan Hill like the plague, but him and Tatum were hilarious together. I avoided the movie for a long time until a friend let me borrow it, and I watched it on a whim. Hype can kill a movie, but going in low certainly helped.

I loved Haywire too. Strong female, amazing fight scenes. The fact that they got so many amazing actors to support the movie. The self-referential stuff was good too, when they mention putting Gina's character into an unusual situation. It was commented on how this isn't what she's used to doing. It just worked for me.
