I opted for the album title (Time Out) in my rejected headline.

/"Blue Rondo a la Turk" is pretty jammin'

Best vanity plate ever - I saw blue Kia Rondo with the plate "ALA TURK".

My dad loved Brubeck. And he loved Steely Dan. When he died three years ago, "Take Five" was his ringtone.

My dad was kind of crap as a dad in many ways, but he gave me my soundtrack. Really, really good stuff.

So, thanks Dave. Thanks, Dad, for Dave. Rest in peace.

"Learn to work
The saxophone
And I'll Play
Just what I feel.
Drink Scotch whiskey
All night long
And die behind the wheel."

Ohhh, we listened to that every morning for awhile. And then there was "Peg."

Tonight I will listen to both Jazz in Oberlin and Aja, and lift a glass to them all.

Back in college I saw the last tour of the original quartet, when Desmond was already sick. I got to sit on stage in overflow seating. Amazing to hear how bad the acoustics were from his position.
I have always been amazed by the way he was able to play jazz with one time signature and key for each hand. The original man with two brains.

Gotta go and re listen to Unsquare Dance. So long, Dave

Plus, he introduced me to Joe Morello - BEST. DRUMMER. EVER. If you've ever wondered why drummers like John Bonham, Ginger Baker, and Keith Moon praised Joe Morello's playing, watch this video!

Morello was one of a couple of drummers from that era who had a knack for fitting odd times into the music - but never overwhelming the song. Think of Milt Turner on Ray Charles' "What'd I say?" with that weird conga.

Those guys were BEASTS.

Mine was similar (Time Completely Out).

He's is now doing an Unsquare Dance on the other side.

Hope the first people he sees on the other side are 'Bird, Trane, Satchmo, & Dizz. Then they'll go jam somewhere for all the people to see.

/RIP Dave

You're thinking of "free jazz", which is an aural assault, and I honestly don't think anyone listens to it when no one is watching. Brubeck's pieces are quite structured.

I'd say I'm bummed, but how could I be? Guy was awesome, had an awesome life, left an awesome legacy of truly innovative music, what the hell else was he going to do? Get sad and old (but never unhip)? He couldn't have been more honored in his field. Take a bow, Dave. We will miss you, but I can't be sad, I still have the best part of you on vinyl.

Aw, SHIAT. Brubeck is the awesomest awesome that ever awesomed. "Was", now, I guess.

In 2008, he was awarded a Kennedy Center Honor along with Mel Brooks. During the "let's all tell Dave how awesome he is" part of things, they brought out a military orchestra to perform "Take Five", along with "special guests". The special guests were Dave's 3 sons (or 3 of them), and when the camera cut to Brubeck pere (at 91 years old), he very clearly lit up brighter than Rockefeller Center in December, clapped his hands and exclaimed "Son of a biatch!"

Tax Boy: Dave Brubeck didn't write Take Five.

[media.tumblr.com image 352x240]

Welll, what do you know. I just checked out wikipedia:
Take Five" is a jazz piece written by Paul Desmond and performed by The Dave Brubeck Quartet on their 1959 album Time Out... Upon his death in 1977, Desmond left the rights to royalties for performances and compositions, including "Take Five", to the American Red Cross, which has since received combined royalties of approximately $100,000 per year.
That's kind of cool.

At any rate, I saw Dave Brubeck about a year and a half ago, and he was still a pretty damned good performer at age 89.

Spoken like a man who's never played a note in his life.

But here's a hint: most ensemble "jazz" is scored, it's not nearly as improvised as you think Even Dixieland, which is highly improvisational, has some pretty strict rules about who does what and when.

That's why I always preferred big band, but Brubeck's quartet was always very coherent for a small jazz group.
