ongbok: KarmicDisaster: She should have no trouble getting a job at FOX then.

Came to say this.

But I wonder what caused them to check her sources after so long? It seems that she was just writing fluff pieces for a column buried on page 10. Doesn't seem that they would just start looking into her sources on a whim since she wasn't writing anything of any real consequence that probably wasn't paid much attention to. I betting somebody close to her that she pissed off dropped a dime to the paper that she was making all of her pieces up.

FTA....The investigation of Jeffrey's work began Nov. 12 when a Veterans Day assignment raised questions among editors, who decided to closely review the story Jeffrey wrote.

The editors were unable to find the Chipman family. When asked if she could help locate the family, Jeffrey said she could not because she threw away her notes.

A story a month earlier featured four people we could not find. Then another story with unfound sources. Then another. In our initial examination, going back to Aug. 1, 2011, we were unable to find 15 sources in six stories.

2012-12-05 01:59:32 PM

Mr. Right: FTA: How did this happen? Or more important, how did we allow this to happen?

That's easy. Your editors are just as lazy as your reporters. Next question.

Not so much:

How did this happen? Or more important, how did we allow this to happen? It's a question we cannot satisfactorily answer. Clearly we placed too much trust in a reporter and did not verify sourcing with necessary frequency.

It's an editor's job to scrutinize a reporter's work and be sure what we publish is fair and accurate; at the same time, there also is a level of trust between a reporter and an editor.

If I had to guess, I'd say this woman fell under the "scary lesbian veteran reporter don't question me" category. She finally pissed off the wrong person. Anyone working anywhere for 30 years gets lazy if they are allowed to. She's been phoning it in for the last 15 years. She's at the age to have received an inheritance from parents and was just clocking in at the Times for the bennies.
She probably got a decent severance package. No wonder newspapers are going broke. They paid this lazy lying POS to not do her job for the 15 years in an industry where they could have paid two young eager journalists to do much more for way less.

Bungles: Bah, my university essays had innumerable fictional books in the bibliography. "Douglas Wallace" wrote about everything from postmodern architecture to Elizabethan drama, depending on what quote invention an essay required. Usually he was published on university presses or journals that have a very patchy electronic databases.

You want to go hunt for that article on "Pre-Roman Animal Sexuality" professor, in the sub-library basement with all the 70s hard-copies of the Classics History Journal? Be my guest sir.

It's more disheartening when I notice legitimate journal articles do the same thing. I've tracked down some really obscure ephemera that seems to have once existed, and a couple of things that seems to have not.

Enh, as long as you're not using your degree to get a job building bridges, spaceships, cars, factories, buildings, or other things that real people trust with their lives, I'm not that interested in how you got your degree.

Just as long as you're cool with the fact that because of people like you, the companies that actually have people putting their lives in trust to them don't care about anyone with your degree.
