Jack Brooks, who spent 42 years in Congress representing his Southeast Texas district and was in the Dallas motorcade in 1963 when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, has died. He was 89.

Damn.

You're thinking of Mel Torme. He was an extra on Night Court.

I hope there will be a new crop of such Texans before long. We need more of them.

He created a positive legislative legacy - nobody can do more than that. He made the world a better place and I'm sorry to see him gone.

Wait, I thought he was the guy who played a priest in M. Night Shyamalan's "Sign o' the Times."

a college friend used to work for Rep. Brooks.

Coolest story i remember is that he used to use a gavel for the Judiciary Committee hearings that was made from wood from the podium that Richard Nixon resigned from.

RIP, Congressman.

Rarely does the death of a politician, especially one from Texas, deserve the sad tag, but if this guy helped the Civil Rights movement then he was probably all right.

Nobody, and I do mean nobody, should be allowed to serve 42 years in elected offices. 12 years max then they can go out a live with the laws they have imposed on the rest of us, both the good and the bad.

I know, it was sad when in the 70s and 80s we accidentally the whole thing.

Snapper Carr: Texas Democrat - two words which one rarely encounters in such close proximity these days.

If that's an (implied) serious question, 11 of the 31 current state senators are democrats (one is officially unaffiliated) and the house is 95/55 GOP.

The voting demographics are a little ... well, a lot closer to 50/50 than that, but we're hardly the only state with gerrymandering. It happens. Anyhow, Texas has a mix of the two parties and factions within the parties like anywhere else. Entertainingly, one of the trends is the Tea Party faction recently going down in flames with the one unfortunate exception of Cruz taking the US senate seat.

Not so much "all right" as "totally farking awesome". Even party machine politicians are sometimes farking cool as all hell in every way.

He was also a great cricket player, and he wrote the lyrics for "That's Amore." I don't how he managed to do all that AND stay in Congress, but I guess he was an amazing dude.

In his day, plenty. Most of them attempted to shape civil rights laws in unspeakable ways (Johnson was an obvious exception, and so was Jack Brooks).

/I think most of them switched 1980-1984 or thereabouts.

I remember this guy from the Iran-Contra hearings -- he kicked ass. Most memorably, he attempted to question Oliver North about a secret marital-law contingency plan that North had authored: Link

Note that Brooks was summarily shut down by the committee chair. I'm not a conspiracy-theory aficionado, but I remember finding this whole exchange rather ... disquieting ... at the time.

It didn't used to be all derp all the time around here. It actually isn't, but the herpsters are always the loudest.

From Molly Ivins, an admirer: "[Congressman Jack] Brooks," she writes, "does not give a flying fart about what is seemly..."
